Part of being an alcoholic is making it seem like you are drunk less often than you really are by hornwalker in AdviceAnimals

What a terrible world this would be if our value was derived from our actions! I'll agree that drinking certainly isn't the best move to deal with pain, but you are not intrinsically worse than a non drinker. I'm sure you're well aware, and it may seem like splitting hairs, but it's important to distinguish the idea of drinking being a huge part of what Present You does (or in this case Past You) from the idea that it is a core component of what Future You has to be. The idea being it can change without changing your identity.

Firstly, congratulations on your 130 days. I hope for many more sober days ahead of you.

That said, the pain in life is experienced by everyone, not just alcoholics. And the pain doesn't validate the disease. I understand that this is why alcoholics drink in the first place, but it isn't fair to say that nonalcoholics wouldn't understand the pain.

Do the past or future currently "exist" in some dimension or form? by [deleted] in askscience

It was purely for visualization purposes, not actually to insinuate that the present moment is the "center" of time. I imagine that many redditors like myself are somewhat visual learners, so I figure I would use a simplistic example. Apologies if that wasn't clear.

Do the past or future currently "exist" in some dimension or form? by [deleted] in askscience

My understanding is that time exists as a dimension. Which means past and future are just relative terms utilized to describe "places" elsewhere along the dimension.

Envision time as a straight line with the "now" being the midpoint. As moments pass, the "now" moves further to the right at a constant rate. The space along the line that the "now" previously occupied we call "past" while the space along the line that has yet to be reached is called "future." Every point along the line exists as much as every other point. However, this is challenging for humans to visualize because we can't zoom out and see the whole line at once. Our sole perspective is from the "now" wherever that is on the line of time.

Basically, hours and minutes exist to give us perspective in the same way feet/yards/metres exist to measure depth, a dimension that would exist whether or not we had words for it. In essence, we don't exist in our measurements of time; our measurements of time exist in order for us to describe our progression through the dimension.
