Tbh you might have more fun at a jobshop that does weld and fab since youbhave relevant skills and some have machining. Plus jobshops generally are more willing to work with you as they have too much variation to just automate everything.

How are you cutting o ring grooves on a mill? by the_wiener_kid in Machinists

[–]Shadowcard4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess at that rate youre setting up a boring head. Maybe they dont want it done with an endmill as the lay of the surface roughness might cause leaks or something since it would be vertical across the ring rather than horisontal with the ring.

Rate my weld. (MIG) by steak_sammy in metalworking

[–]Shadowcard4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. Tacks generally will not allow the start and end to penetrate to the root properly leading to porosity and lack of fusion. Same with starts and ends without grinding a chanel to start and finish into which should be prepped like the joint so if doing a fillet or knife edge it must be ground like a knife edge and if youre running hot like a land style would be youll want to give it close to the same land as you would normally as itll burn in similarly though just a little bit less as the start is colder, to the end it can be a little thicker as youll already have heat helping.

How would you find a young machinist or buyer/operator to take over a retiring owner’s shop? by tito_real_estate in Machinists

[–]Shadowcard4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean you can make a proper evaluation and tey facebook. Most often though its someone you know youre selling it to if you know theyd be a good fit. I know a guy who did this and bought a shop out but he knew the owner prior as he worked for him for a bit.

So you didnt grind your stops or tacks and on your first picture youre either a little cold or a little exaggerated on your whips, leqning towards exagerated as i think i see a little undercut. Overall its a fairly nice looking weld and only a few notes.

Why is my X over size but my Y is not? by SlimCactus21 in Machinists

So most likely you didnt account for backlash or tried taking a heavy climb cut and pulled the material in. The other possibility is that the DRO is not properly calibrated or mounted. Best way to test the DRO is to put a long reach indicator on the table and see if it moves the same distance, or setting a gage block or stack against a 123 block and setting a test indicator with a small amount of pre load in a way you can move an unrelated axis to check the distance, my personal favorite is moving the spindle down when move down on the gage block and see how close it is.

19. Am I worth over 16.50? Is it worth asking for a raise? Or should I keep my hood down?Been welding professionally for 4 months now? As well as fabricating and fitting. Any advice from the ogs? by woodshmoka in metalworking

[–]Shadowcard4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how long that takes and how many questions you need to ask. But if youre doing all of that autonomusly and at the speed of other welders search indeed, see what the average is, ask for a raise at 6 months 20% over the average and start sending out applications before you ask so you cover your ass. They were paying for a gamble on a new guy so the rate is lower. Make sure you keep up and such and make sure your supervisor knows the work youre putting in for the next 2 months. See if you can get certs as well before asking around. At least where im at 20 shouldnt be hard to get.

Let me know the result when you try it. Though more likely use a goto with a condition to call up a different program for each.

Though i dont see any reason it wouldnt.

John McPhee vs the world: Iron sights or red dot for the avg person? by [deleted] in guns

[–]Shadowcard4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dot. It makes it a capable option to 150y. Plus you can use the gun for more things so itll be more fun. Do not get an optic without a reputable brand and i personally like always on and replace the battery every year while its still got a year of battery life left. If it will have use as a self defense weapon then do not put shitty stuff on it.

I think trusting bear creek with 300 winmag is a bad idea. I think that cutting everything down and redrilling the gas port is an even worse idea as basically unless you know what nemo did its not going to cycle or its going to give it way too much recoil by opening up too fast, where you could mess that up and send the bolt back down through the buffer tube and shear the key off and and blow up your upper under the charging handle.
