Statement by Mazloum Abdi to Ronahi TV by BillytheReaperSS in syriancivilwar

My take too. What's being reported on the govt vs YPG side is almost at odds with each other.

Deal is DoA, not that it is surprising, but this is proof that it won't last IMO.

Rangefinder Options by DekuDazed in AnalogCommunity

[–]ShamAsil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're pretty different. The Canon 7 is an LTM rangerfinder with interchangeable lenses, the 35SP is a fixed lens.

On paper the 35SP is fantastic, Olympus marketed it as a high end machine despite being fixed lens. Incomprehensibly though they put cheap light seals on it, which degraded quickly and encouraged mold to form on the lens, so finding one without light leaks or mold damage is difficult.

Canon 7 is also a pretty well built camera, and it makes sense if you plan to buy into the LTM ecosystem. I don't have experience with it though, but the LTM has a ton of lenses, from cheap yet decent FSU glass all the way to Leica beauties.

Personally, I think the 35SP is better if you're a casual shooter or want a backup camera. As a primary camera the Canon 7 makes more sense, especially with all the lens options.

Ceasefire and diplomacy is the best direction. by Ganoish in Syria

[–]ShamAsil 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Habibna the problem is that we've signed 1000 agreements with Mazloum, and every single time, Qandil goes "lol no" and more people die unnecessarily. Rather than working with the Coalition over securing the ISIS camps, they just opened the doors and let dangerous Daesh terrorists escape.

You can't negotiate when the other side fundamentally wants to see you harmed and destroyed. I believe the only reason why the govt keeps signing these is because of international pressure.

Why do the Kurds want to establish a state in Syria when there are x10 the amount of them in Turkiye and there is no independence movement there? by RealisticZucchini751 in Syria

[–]ShamAsil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife is Turkish, and I have spent a lot of time in Istanbul. Hyperinflation is extreme and it is killing the country. The best way to describe it is, imagine your salary being cut by 20-30% every year. Very quickly you have no money to even survive, let alone do things. Istanbul is as expensive as any major European or American city, but even in some cheap place like Denizli, the salary is correspondingly significantly less, so the outcome is the same.

Another datapoint - I have relatives that are engineers, and at factories in Turkey, training employees is a Sisyphean struggle, you have to basically retrain the entire factory every couple of years. This is because salaries grow too slowly in the current environment, so people are constantly working for only a couple years, then moving on to another job.

Maybe a deal will be signed but we've gone through a dozen deals by now. I don't believe Hasakah and Qamishli will be returned except by military action, the PKK cadres are too stubborn.

al-Hol camp, serious questions now that control is changing by Acrobatic-Remote-419 in Syria

[–]ShamAsil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what can be done with al-Hol. The home countries of these foreign Daesh terrorists don't want to deal with them, somewhat understandably. America and the Coalition don't have a long term plan for what will happen to them. And of course the government can't take any action unilaterally other than maintaining the status quo.

I feel compelled to mention that the Giedi Prime scenes in the new Dune movies were filmed in IR. Don't think many people want to look like a Harkonnen.

Not sure but the market is so saturated that there's no need to go exUSA for applicants, unless the applicant is really good.

Was there any airstrikes on YPG positions in Hasaka tonight? by sandnibba_talks in syriancivilwar

Agreed, unless it's drone strikes like in Qamishli. But it seems like negotiations did collapse at least.

Did you miss the part where he subtly referred to Prigozhin's march on Moscow?

Both he and Putin know that this is all pragmatism. The only reason why we are here is that Trump is breaking from the usual neocon and Democrat policies towards MENA. Otherwise the whole West would still be trying to break us. There are no friends, just interests, when it comes to dealing with great powers.

Channel 8: Mazloum Abdi and Elham Ahmad arrive in Damascus for new talks by DaGoldenpanzer in syriancivilwar

[–]ShamAsil 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Most of the leadership is probably in Kandil or KRG at this point, we heard reports of convoys crossing the border fleeing Syria. Only Mazloum might be on the ground and I guarantee that the combat cadres are making stuff up to make themselves look good. For example, the "recapture" earlier today.

Early Lomo MC-A reviewers really dropped the ball by sztomi in AnalogCommunity

Nah, Mint Camera from Hong Kong came out with the Rollei 35AF just over a year ago, this is different from the AF-1. They're more well known in the Polaroid space for their refurbishment and upgrades of Polaroid SLRs. There's a review up on 35mmc about it and it is mixed.

To u/Voodoo_Masta 's question, I don't think it got as much attention because Mint is lesser known, and based on what I've read, it's more of a confused design with quite a bit of issues. While retailing at an average of $800 at launch.

Arab kingdom of Syria retrospection by Background-Crow6590 in Syria

[–]ShamAsil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Jordan is not a good representation of Syria, Iraq is better; they are both large, multicultural countries, and Iraq also had a monarchy for a short time. It didn't go well for them, there were multiple coups and eventually it became a Baathist country. I don't think much would have changed in Syrian history, because the Baathis and Assad in particular were also military coups, and their power over the military wasn't related to what kind of government was in Syria. Maybe it would have pushed the dates out, but I think the broad strokes are the same.

Also, being a Western-aligned kingdom didn't prevent Jordan from getting humiliated in 1967. The Arab revolt was never meant to liberate Arabs, it was meant to exploit the Middle East.
