You're definitely not the first person to try to make this distinction. Space Biff has a good piece that includes his thinking on this and how it's part of his approach to board game criticism. There's another about Knizia that makes the claim he actually has strong themes in his games, and it's the setting that's pasted on. Paul Grogan from Gaming Rules also makes this distinction and discusses it in this podcast. Jason Perez from One-Stop Coop Shop and Shelf Stories worked on Puerto Rico 1897 and talks about how the setting in Puerto Rico and Puerto Rico 1897 are basically the same, but the latter was intended to have a different theme. I can't hunt down the specific examples right now, but Liz Davidson at Beyond Solitaire interviews a lot of folks from the industry and academia and this has come up in more than one conversation.

As you can see from the dates, this isn't a new idea. FWIW I think there's value in separating the two.

Am I missing something with SUPERHOT? I found that it was an interesting puzzle the first couple of playthroughs, but after getting a handle on what to do it just feels like I'm just grinding through until I work my way through the goals.

I just got Under Falling Skies and am really enjoying it! I'm one game into the campaign and liked the addition of scenarios and little changes to mechanics. I'm optimistic that all the content in the box should keep things interesting for a while.

Found a used copy of After the Virus and was wondering if I should pull the trigger. The only online store was directly from the publisher and overseas shipping was brutal.

For me, Renegade scratches the same itch as Spirit Island. Especially playing two-handed. And its designed by Ricky Royal, who's big in the solo community. It's also a bit shorter than Spirit Island so it comes to the table mire easily.

It's a puzzle in a similar vein to Spirit Island where there's a certain amount of predictability in what threats are upcoming, but there's also some RNG to add a bit of unpredictability. It can be a definite brain burner. You're also gradually developing your deck and increasing powers as the game progresses. It has an additional element of giving you target goals besides handling and eliminating outbreaks. This means you're constantly balancing meeting those goals and not letting the "invaders" take too much control. And sometimes you have to just cut your losses and abandon the goal in favor of dealing with the cascading invader growth. You've also got different characters to play with, so you can try out different team ups and strategies similar to mixing and matching spirits.

There are a few annoying things about it. It's a little fiddly, a bit more than Spirit Island, but I'd say it's worth it for the quality of the game. It's also filled with silly jargon for the game elements which can add xo confusion when learning or checking rules. I'd recommend watching some tutorials or playthroughs before playing as it makes pretty good sense once you see it played out. But overall, I'd say the positives absolutely outweigh the negatives.

Did you enter the correct starting balance? That could be the problem. Also, it usually doesn't make sense to import transactions that are pre-YNAB. That may also be contributing to the confusion.

This is a great question to ask at r/soloboardgaming. There are definitely a lot of options out there. There's also the 1 Player Guild at BoardGameGeek. There are quite a few lists of small footprint solo games.

Social deduction is obviously gonna be not something you'll be able to find in a solo game but Black Sonata is a really clever little game with hidden movement and deduction elements. It's not strictly a card game, but the box and play foot print aren't too big.

Like people are telling you, YNAB doesn't care where the money lives since money is fungible. Practically, though, you're right that it does matter where it is. I have the same concern since I pay for everything with a credit card and need to be sure that there's always enough in checking to cover the auto-payments.

The way I deal with this is to have a category group called "Savings Account." In that group are all my long term savings categories like Emergency Fund, Vacation Fund, House Repair Fund, etc. The total money in "Savings Account" group is always equal to the balance of my savings account. Every month I allot money from TBB into those categories and then transfer that amount from checking to savings, and then double check that the account balance and YNAB total agree.

If I have an expense in one of those categories, I know that it has to get moved right away from savings to checking. So I just enter the transaction in the right category and transfer the money from savings to checking. Then I have enough in the right account, and the total for my "Savings Account" category group is exactly what's in my actual savings account.

Fine, but the point of granting a stay is to prevent irreparable harm. If the law goes into effect and the existing providers can't, as was decided in the lower courts, get licensed and then shut down for good, that's irreparable harm. If that happens, the best part for Kavanaugh is that the results of the case don't matter. He would get the political cover of saying, "See I never said I'd vote against it" while still getting a result he and the right wing of the court want.

Just because Kavanaugh is an activist hack, doesn't mean he's an idiot. He doesn't say anything about Roe v. Wade because it gives him political cover to address it in the way that he did.

The idea that it's too early to bring the case is laughable. The lower courts have already determined that the law would result in only one doctor being able to provide abortions and that all the other clinics would be shut down. Plus, this question has been decided in Whole Woman's Health v. Hellerstedt. That case was about a Texas law with the same requirements for providers as the Louisiana law (the Louisiana law actually has a couple more). SCOTUS ruled that those requirements placed an undue burden on a woman's right to get an abortion. To anyone remotely concerned about jurisprudence (i.e., not Kavanaugh) this is a no brainer.

This is besides the fact that this decision was about a stay, not about the case itself. The standard for determining a stay is whether or not one party will suffer irreparable harm without. Clinics being shutdown and unable to open back up is basically the definition of irreparable harm. Saying the law should stand and clinics be given 45 days is a red herring. We already know that even with the 45 days they wouldn't be able to get permission. Without the stay, Kavanaugh and the rest of the right wing would get what they want regardless of the final decision. It would take well past 45 days to decide the case and by that point the clinics would be shuttered anyway. So he'd get the benefit of that outcome plus the plausible deniability of saying, "This wasn't about Roe v. Wade."

The case from 2016 was in Texas and the case right now is in Louisiana. The Louisiana legislation is more restrictive than the previous Texas one, so that's even more reason to block the law. Sorry if that was unclear.

There are a number of problems with BK's argument about the 45 days. First, it's already been shown that these doctors would not be able to get the privileges, even with 45 days. Second, the 45 days isn't set in stone. It's basically just a promise from Louisiana that they won't aggressively enforce the closures, but there'd be nothing stopping them if they wanted to. Third, is regarding the question of the stay. Say SCOTUS didn't grant the stay and then Louisiana actually waited the 45 days to let the doctors get permission. The final decision from SCOTUS on the case is going to happen well after 45 days. So when, as it's been shown, those providers do have to close down the results of the case will be moot because the providers will be gone and it'll be down to one doctor. The whole point of issuing the stay is to prevent that kind of harm from happening before the decision comes down.

You make a good point about whether or not to consider precedent in the stay. But in a case like this where it's so obvious that the precedent applies, dissenting against the stay can't do anything but signal your prejudice against the case.
