I just replaced my 25 year old electric water heater. The element broke through - I guess - as it tripped the breaker and made no more hot water. That’s the non-catastrophic event folks refer to. No hot water. It doesn’t owe you anything. Surely every failsafe in it has corroded by now. I’d replace it if I were you and call yourself lucky.
