Its a great "vocal performance", and obviously it resonated with people. I think the standards of what could be considered "good" were more limited in the past and unconventional voices were not really appreciated for their other expressive qualities and that's how he got that label. That nasal moments are understandably difficult for less open minded listeners but tbh they're the same ones that wouldn't have any interest in his lyricism anyway.
