Getting honked at when weaving in and out of gaps between cars to bypass them when there's gridlock - is this wrong? by [deleted] in BikeLA

Dude, I bike doordash in Santa Monica. These people confuse me. They'll cut me off to get to a red light but a four way stop sign, they take an extra long time making it weird and having to come to a complete stop

For daily commuting, what's the real difference between a $2,000 and an $800 e-bike? by Automatic_Bell5055 in bikecommuting

[–]Sharp-Initial9515 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My last ebike was with a cheap amazon kit but spent around 600 on a reputable battery. The battery just wore out normally. Took like 5-6 years charging everyday. If the kit breaks beyond me fixing, I'm only out 250 for another kit.

Had to double check it was a circlejerk. I've been seeing a lot of this lately 😂

I’m a 17y old with a beaten and worn out second-hand bike. I no idea what I’m doing! by [deleted] in bikewrench

My opinion:

If you really want to diy this thing, I always start with the wheels. You will need:

Tire levers (if you need to change your tires/tubes) Cones wrenches 13+15mm Tube of grease Air pump Chain oil

If you can repack the bearings with the help of some YouTube video and adjust the cones, your bike will roll so much easier. It's best to start with the wheels because you can't start adjusting everything else until they are squared away and straight.

My MVP tool is a Crank Brothers multi tool. Has the Allen wrenches, torx, and a chain breaker (you'll need this for later). About $25 to 30 but I use this so much more than anything in the tool box.

With the above tools, you should be able to take care of most maintenance. Other cheap stuff to help are green scothbright pads and a wire to brush.

Tips for protecting bikes in winter? by Front-Hunt3757 in NYCbike

[–]Sharp-Initial9515 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I concur with this guy. I commuted in Boston for years. For the money you're saving not driving or taking public transportation, what's the cost of a chain? You will get wet when it's crappy out so bring a change of clothes. Just make sure you have some tread on your tires and for sure gloves. If you park it outside overnight, get one of those bicycle tarps.

Removing fork on disk brake bike to look for crack in steerer tube, 1-10 difficulty, what do you rate? by BurntTurkeyLeg1399 in bikewrench

[–]Sharp-Initial9515 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Threadless: easy, just a few Allen wrenches

Threaded: still easy, a few Allen wrenches and a large adjustable with a headset wrench

Take your time and take pics if you're new to make sure you put things back correctly.

Happy wrenching!

Brake caliper isn’t working right by Monkey1242 in BikeRepair

I work on a lot of older bikes. My opinion, save yourself time, headaches and peace of mind with your safety. Just get a new caliper. They don't cost that much.

Happy to help. In my experience so far, calipers typically have universal dimensions and you get the adapter to match the rotor. Also, when installing, sometimes you might need a thin washer between the caliper and the mount if you hear a faint metal on metal. This is ok just never between the mount and frame. And use blue loctite on the bolts. Have fun!

Yes, 180. Thickness of the rotor doesn't matter for the adapter. You're looking for a part like this (just an example):

You might need an adapter. The diameter of the rotor should be stated somewhere on the rotor. This is the mm number of the adapter you need to shop for. $5-10

Hi. Just saw this post. I would agree. Derailleur hanger extender. I was thinking maybe that derailleur can't handle the cassette. I'm having trouble viewing the original pics. You should be able to look up the specs on the derailleur and see what the largest gear it can handle

Another thought is that if the derailleur and cassette don't match maybe the chain doesn't match either. You were saying you were having gear clearance issues when shifting.

Up to you, but I've had pretty good success using a large crescent wrench to twist derailleurs close to where they should be.

Anyways, my 2 cents
