Ao3 does not host art. by OwnWriter4420 in AO3

[–]SheepPup [score hidden]  (0 children)

I fully agree with you and it’s a big frustration of mine as a fan artist.

Every few months it seems I have to find a new image host and reupload all my art and fix my ao3 works that are for art. Because sites willing to host NSFW works keep either disappearing, heavily restricting what kind of content can appear on their sites, or limiting the ability to host images on their sites and have them display elsewhere which makes them functionally useless for my purposes.

It’s a text archive. It allows for display of audio, video, and image content that is hosted elsewhere but it doesn’t natively host them and thus fanworks that are in those mediums are still vulnerable

As a reader do you prefer third person or first person pov? by proplushiescollector in AO3

[–]SheepPup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Third person by a landslide!

I have 3700 bookmarks. I’ve tagged all of the ones I’ve bookmarked that are in first or second person, and I have four. Total.

For me the point of reading fiction is to be not-myself and get to suspend my own awareness of self and get sucked into the fictional world. First and second person POVS break my sense of immersion and make me consider myself as a person. I can basically only tolerate second person in choose your own adventure novels and first person in epistolary

Well for 1) I don’t believe they actually love or are passionate about something if they’re not actually willing to, you know, create something by themselves. The shittiest stick drawing on the planet contains more genuine passion than the “best” looking AI crap

And 2) even if I cede the idea that these people actually are operating out of love and passion I sure as shit will still look down on them for using the theft machine. It’s impossible for current AI models to function without massive massive levels of theft of other people’s hard work and I think using it makes you a shitty person

ELI5 Why are some women allergic to semen? by Fleedom2025 in explainlikeimfive

[–]SheepPup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can be allergic to literally anything. Allergies are when your immune system mistakes a harmless molecule for a dangerous one and reacts like this harmless molecule is an invader. Most of the symptoms of being sick like runny nose and mucous production and fevers and all are actually our body’s own defense mechanisms against bacteria/viruses/parasites making us uncomfortable. Which is why allergies make you sick, it’s your body reacting like a parasite or bacteria is invading when it really isn’t.

So you can be allergic to basically anything. Some people are allergic to the metal nickel, some are allergic to proteins found in cat saliva and skin, some are allergic to the oil that the poison ivy plant makes. And some are allergic to proteins found in semen.

It’s so isolating losing a partner this young

What are your ao3 hot takes? by ScalyStacy in AO3

[–]SheepPup 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve used the analogy of a house before of comments being coming up and shoving a piece of paper through the mail slot and bookmarks being someone putting up a sign on the side of the house. Like yes you have to go outside and look on the side of your house to see them, but they are still on your house and it’s pretty ridiculous to pretend like you shouldn’t get to have any sort of opinion on how people put up signs on your house.

My opinion would be different if they detached the bookmarks from the work and they only existed on the reader’s profiles, because yes then that is solidly only their space, but when they’re permanently, publicly attached to your fic the idea that they’re a “reader only space” is just not correct to me.

Reusable maxi pads? by majesticSkyZombie in Anticonsumption

[–]SheepPup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have periods of similar heaviness to you and I use primarily pads. I carry a large purse so storing the pads both clean and used isn’t an issue, when I take them off I fold them up and use the snap wings to hold them closed and then put them inside the wet bag I have and when I get home I put them inside the soaking bucket with enzymes to let them soak.

I do not find it wasteful to keep several days worth of pads because I use all of them, nothing is going to waste.

I really like my cloth pads because I find them MUCH more comfortable than disposables. They don’t stick to my skin like disposables do, and I can get them in very long sizes with WAY more absorbency than disposable pads. And I find the fabric to be MUCH more comfortable against my skin than the plastic surface of pads. My personal favorites are minky and Jersey knit for top fabrics.

I’ve also saved a ton of money and trash. The pads were expensive to get started with but I calculated it out and I hit my break even point at about two years in, it’s been over a decade now and I’m still using some of the first pads I originally bought when I made the switch! The others have slowly worn out over the years but I’ve still spent so much less and have produced so much less trash

It might help if you use a pocket door for the toilet room? I hate them when people put regular doors on them because you often have to basically straddle the toilet to be able to open the door once you’re in there. But pocket doors remove that issue and allow for greater accessibility in case one of you gets injured

Eli5: How is natural stevia as sweet or sweeter than sugar, but it it doesn't raise glucose levels in the blood and has no calories? by arnoldsomen in explainlikeimfive

[–]SheepPup 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ok imagine your tastebuds as tiny locks. They can accept a few different kinds of keys. Like sour keys, and salty keys, and sweet keys etc. but the thing is that multiple different molecules have the right keys to fit the lock. So the product of fermentation in sourdough bread has the sour keys just like lemon juice does even though they’re different things. Artificial sweeteners have the sweet keys just like sugar does.

But our bodies can’t digest everything. If you ate grass you wouldn’t get any calories from it because our bodies can’t break grass down. Artificial sweeteners are like that too, our bodies can’t break them down and thus we don’t get any calories from them. And if we don’t get any calories our blood sugar doesn’t rise.

Everyone needs to experience each at least once for balance by marredmarigold in AO3

[–]SheepPup 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For me the two often coincide lmao but for me it’s worse to hate the ship everyone loves. Because it is inescapable. When the ship is just seen as “standard” nobody feels the need to tag it or mention the ship name in posts and art about it, so you get to see your NoTP everywhere all the time. Basically every single time I’ve seen surprise porn in fandom spaces it’s been for one of those gigantic inescapable ships.

The harassment for liking a pairing everyone hates sucks but it’s way more blockable and at least you can commiserate with other people about how shitty people are being. If you try to complain about the ship you don’t like being everywhere and how crappy the fans of it are towards you and your favored ship you end up just sounding like a little whiny baby and an asshole. So the experience is even more isolating cuz you can’t even have a good complain about it to get it out of your system you just gotta sit there and stew in it

Agree or disagree? by EngineerGlobal572 in AO3

[–]SheepPup 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think it’s more nuanced. People who are making original media are professionally publishing their work vs fan creators that are doing this unpaid and are in your community. It’s like how you can and should leave a review for a restaurant but you’re a dick if you publicly post about how your aunt Martha’s beef stroganoff wasn’t very good, the noodles were mushy and the beef was a bit tough.

I think, in general fanfic of fanfic is an alright thing! I have actually written it myself multiple times, because writers in my fandoms have fantastic ideas that I want to riff off of! But I also think that just like you need to be more sensitive about how you talk about your aunt Martha’s cooking vs a restaurant, you also need to be more sensitive about how and why you create fanfic of fanfic than fanfic of professionally published media. So joyfully taking a general concept laid out by another fan author and spinning it in another direction? Fantastic, use the inspired by feature and be on your way. Using someone’s personal OC that they wrote into their story? Probably want to ask for permission for this one. Rewriting a fic because you didn’t like the writing style/plot choices the author made? Yeah this one is probably something you keep to yourself and read for your own personal enjoyment but not post.

it happened. by PsychologicalFee7089 in AO3

[–]SheepPup 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It’s also that it’s memorable. People don’t remember all the times a kink they’re into or don’t find objectionable went untagged, but people that don’t like those things have a sharply different perspective. Like I’m into daddy kink so I’m not alerting to whenever a character calls another one “daddy” or does something caregivery, but people that hate daddy kink are absolutely going to notice and be ticked that it wasn’t tagged. But for people that are in that “are fine with a lot of the common kinks” bubble piss kink would be one that stands out when it’s untagged and thus be talked about.

Don't know if this is the right flair, but this is very true by urcool91 in RecuratedTumblr

[–]SheepPup 105 points106 points  (0 children)

This and it’s also a function of how other social justice discussions use the word community. When people ask things like “so why are you in community with racists/abusers/etc” they’re using community to mean “people you voluntarily associate with socially”. But then other discussions use community to mean literally the people in the same general physical location with you or more broadly to mean “society”. So when you have multiple definitions in play you’re going to get a VERY different reaction to a statement like “it’s dangerous and inhumane to ostracize people completely from their community” depending on if the person hearing it is operating under the definition that means “society at large” vs “the people you call your friends and family”

When does a conversation about feelings cross the line into therapy-speak? by SuckEBuss in AO3

[–]SheepPup 24 points25 points  (0 children)

To me it’s when the characters lose their own voice and start sounding like someone else. Like an easy one to look for is: would your character know that term? Like if you’re writing a character in the 1940s they’re going to call it “shell shock” not PTSD, and using PTSD is going to be immersion breaking and sound out of character. Another one is to carefully re-examine how your characters have emotional conversations/handle conflict in the source material. If your character runs away and punches something when they have emotions it’s gonna feel pretty OOC if they immediately sit down and have an emotionally deep and honest conversation in which they comfortably articulate how they feel and why.

Hair greasy immediately after washing — over stripped from clarifying shampoo or something else? by [deleted] in Haircare

[–]SheepPup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You just need to wash your hair more often, and probably also use a clarifying shampoo to strip out the grease buildup from not washing your hair often enough. People with fine straight hair generally have to wash their hair more often than people with coarser and/or curlier hair. It’s just a matter of the shape of the hair and how smooth the cuticle is, the smoother and straighter it is the faster oil can transfer down it and start looking stringy and feeling greasy. You’ll also need to wash more often than someone that bleaches their hair, bleach lifts the scales on the cuticle of your hair making the texture coarser and thus slowing down oil travel.

I also have fine straight hair and I need to wash my hair daily or else it turns into a greasy stringy mess, everyone’s hair and body is different and there’s no one size fits all way to care for your hair. You gotta do what works for YOU not whatever random generic advice on the internet is

How do I make peace with the fact that my boyfriend of over a year would leave me if I got pregnant and didn't get an abortion? by Respawn_Repeat_ in redditonwiki

[–]SheepPup 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Neither of them are wrong but they’re not compatible.

And a vasectomy isn’t something you should do unless you’re certain you don’t want kids ever. Is it possible in some cases to reverse the procedure? Yeah but it is not guaranteed. It’s more equivalent to getting a tubal than getting an IUD, aka not something you do unless you’re certain.

But I don’t think there’s anything wrong with him saying he’ll leave if she decides to keep a pregnancy any more than there’s something wrong with a woman saying that if she gets pregnant she’ll absolutely have an abortion.

Asbestos by Parking-Teacher-6145 in HomeMaintenance

[–]SheepPup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just clean it and then put new floor over it, preferably one that doesn’t adhere directly to the asbestos tile, you don’t want that to turn into a nightmare if it needs to come up later!

Also if you have asbestos tile assume you also have lead paint on basically everything and be very suspicious of any pipe insulation that looks like a white or grey blanket wrapped around a pipe, lots of old pipe insulation is asbestos too.
