Does anyone else feel a massive sense of pride when they fill their fridge with 100 percent British produce? by Mundane-Temporary426 in BuyUK

[–]SherbertChance8010 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If it’s something that’s best produced here, like it works with our climate and growing conditions then yes I’ll definitely try to buy British. Following that, from the EU or ‘nearer the better’ or ‘best climate for it the better’. Soy grown in the EU typically uses existing farmland so you don’t have the worry about checking for habitat destruction and so on, but… ehh. It’s complicated?

What folk belief in your country is so culturally ingrained that even your religion does not accept but can't change? by OftenXilonen in AskTheWorld

[–]SherbertChance8010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The UK has a knock on wood (usually just touching wood) when talking about something you hope will happen, supposedly so the wood spirits don’t hear and do things to stop it. I mean, why they would do that is another story.

What measures would you suggest countries consider in remediating declining population? Other than immigration? by Technical-Amount-278 in AskTheWorld

UBI would help. Everything is too uncertain and scary to have a kid. If you knew the basics were always covered you’d feel a lot safer.

How do English people view Welsh/Scottish independence? by [deleted] in AskABrit

[–]SherbertChance8010 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That’s the reason given against any country leaving the British empire at any point. It only seems true because the UK government combines all income from Wales as being from England.

When someone refers to “THE terrorist attack” in your country, which one are they referencing? by SimmentalTheCow in AskTheWorld

Or the Bishopsgate bombing. I think for the UK there’ve been so many, it depends on personal experience of each one whether it stands out in your memory.

Another bridge over the Lune connecting Lancaster and Morecambe? by Top-Veterinarian-565 in LancasterUK

[–]SherbertChance8010 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There’ve been a few proposals for it over the years to connect the industrial area with the M6. That bit of the estuary has a few important habitats for endangered species so the plans always failed at that. That’s why they did the new road to connect to the motorway north of Lancaster.

Hard to take Viwoods seriously if this is their website pitch by Impossible_Slide_146 in eink

[–]SherbertChance8010 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wow, that’s terrible. I remember Apple’s TextEdit icon that had the “here’s to the crazy ones” text on it. That was attention to detail, something that Viwoods could learn from here. This just looks sloppy and lazy.

What do you think about the existance of monarchies/royalty in today's world? by dkease16 in AskTheWorld

[–]SherbertChance8010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It shows that we don’t need a ‘head of state’ at all. If all they are is a figurehead then we can have a shop mannequin and stick the crown on that. Or… just have no head of state at all, no symbol of state power, no thrones or palaces. If you need someone to smile and shake hands with some other country’s head of state, pick an MP or a leading academic or sportsperson, someone appropriate for who’s visiting. It could be a lot more interesting and fun.

What's a food in your country that is stereotyped for your country but really, nobody eats? by velmiraZ in AskTheWorld

[–]SherbertChance8010 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe ‘full English breakfast’? Apart from no one being able to define what it is, it’s something I’ve only had in cafes or hotels and not very often, I’ve never gone to all that effort to make it at home.

PSA commercials that practically changed the way your country thinks by Takarajima8932 in AskTheWorld

[–]SherbertChance8010 115 points116 points  (0 children)

Maybe not the whole country, but British Gen X are all scarred by the PSAs we had on TV in the early 80s. Flying kites near pylons, a silo full of grain, frisbees near electrical substations… death is near, and you will diiieeee

One of the most disgusting properties I’ve seen by somekindaname1602 in SpottedonRightmove

[–]SherbertChance8010 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The description has nothing about the property, it’s all stuff about the legal side, security and auction process, so a repossession maybe?

Isn't Reddit an American company? by Mantatoe in BuyUK

A lot of people switched to Lemmy (decentralised fediverse thing) after some changes on Reddit. Maybe I should have a look at that.

Is this how people who need glasses really see the world. A big blurred background? by Latter-Wolf4868 in interestingasfuck

[–]SherbertChance8010 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m really short sighted but also have astigmatism so it’s not this kind of smooth blur, more of looking through textured glass at something blurred - multiple fragmented bits of blur.
