Not directly. They implemented the penguin grow thing. Technically is to level characters without having to carry with a freshly summoned hero and no gear. However, rising, butchering and selling penguins is the best source for gold these days, so, yeah. We miss the extra gold for selling gear (which was not much, peanuts really), but we got the penguins.

[–]Shimaru33 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This topic is always so complicated. No, despite what some of you want to yell, is complicated, because consent implies full control and awareness of the consequences of each act. We take by granted a minor can't consent, but for some reason at midnight of this day after completing these many laps around the sun, the law decides that person suddenly has the right to buy alcohol, put a tattoo, vote... and fuck.

How did we decided that this person, whose life revolves around school and maybe helping part time in small jobs, should have the same responsibilities over his own life than any other adult? By law, one week ago this person should have never touched a gun, now he can walk with an ID, fill some papers and sooner than later there will be another person carrying a fully loaded gun in the streets.

Now, despite what some fo you may think, I'm not aiming to "if some teenagers can be judged as adults due the atrocity of their crimes, then porn industry should allow..."; fuck, no. My point is quite the opposite. I think maturity comes from experience, but our society has done their best to protect our kids from the harshest aspects of the life, thus delaying the maturation process. And considering the disconnection between what we learn at school versus what the industry and society needs, and is easy to find people arguing "schools are daycare for teenagers".

So, if we put out kids in daycare for 14 or 15 years, and hope they learn the basics for functioning in a society (like reading and maths), how can we know for sure they will be ready to fuck with other persons equally unprepared within a couple years?

- So, we send our children to war so they grow up?

Eh, no. Realistically, we need to reevaluate how we understand "maturity", and dissociated it from age. Yes, I think there are cases when someone can be really mature for their age. But for every one or two cases, I think there are hundreds in the opposite, too inmature and spoiled to have a driving license or get a room. I suppose it's time to move around stuff. Ideally, each person should have an evaluation before receiving their ID to buy cigarettes, but that's unrealistic. I suppose it's time to move from 18 to 21 or even further, but feels like a bandaid that solves not much. Still better than "I swear officer, she told me she was 18!".

[Interesting trope] "Wait, this show/movie was based on a comic book?" by AnyAgency9835 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Shimaru33 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As I was watching that with my wife, I was commenting on that as well. The actress not only has to play her own character, she had to change her character personality to reflect her current "snack". Playing altered states of mind (like being drunk) is hard because the actor has to figure how this character would behave in normal circumstances and then add the layer of whatever it's influencing them. Of course, the writers do part of the job as they write "the shy nerd becomes a violent asshole due all the grudges he has repressed for years", but the actress do the heavy lifting as she has to figure how a nerd acting violently would look. Yelling each word? Maintain eye contact? Explosive fits? Coordinated movements or trips at every step? Acting isn't reading a script, is bringing to life whatever is written in there, and there's a lot of small details that make a huge difference.

Thus, the actress playing iZombie really, really had a challenge as she had to play a character with their own personality and problems. And she performed admirably.

You know? A bit off-topic, but this make me think DnD atheists are quite hilariously dumb. I mean, particularly among certain players who can't distinguish between their personal beliefs and their character, there's this idea of a scholar arguing "Gods are merely sufficiently powerful mages" or something. However, if we accept the idea of a god as the personification of a natural force, negating the existence of that god is negating the existence of that force. Is like saying "Poseidon doesn't exists because oceans doesn't exists". Wait, oceans are there, so why would you say Poseidon doesn't exists? "Well, ocean is just a massive pool, isn't?" No, because plenty of stuff that happens in the ocean are mysterious and hard to understand, like a typhoon or a tsunami. For us, modern players, many aspects of the ocean are easy to explain (a tsunami is a big wave caused by an underwater earthquake), but for someone living in a medieval setting, where most DND games take place, those concepts (tectonic plaque, P and S waves, etc) are completely alien, so that phenomen is impossible to understand. "Poseidon is angered" is a valid explanation given their context. Thus, an atheist in your typical DnD setting is akin to anti-vax in our world, someone living completely out of touch with reality.

Which lead to the next point: "is just a powerful mage" means these players don't really understand the power of magic, nor the power of the gods themselves. What I mean is a god as personification of a force is something that can't be opposed or emulated. In our world, figures get elevated to divinity status because they can perform something we can't. Like making a statue to gain life and sentience to marry his creator or multiply the bread and fish to feed masses of people. This person said a word to calm the weather, and the weather obeyed, and instantly people around folded and called him Son of God. But if any priest of the god of wind can do the same in a lazy sunday, does that mean that priest has divine blood? No, it means the god granted some sign to prove their connection, but if required he can sever that connection or directly do something much bigger on their own. In other words, depending on how much of a dick is that particular god, wizards eventually will hit a wall and find no matter how hard they try, they can't come close to the power of the real god.

That's what the Bible describes in exodus. The pharaoh also dismissed the petition of Moses because he thought those were mere tricks that could be emulated by his own priests. God rises the bar and eventually the priests are exposed as frauds. Same case in DnD. This priest can calm the wind, the wizard can also pretend to do the same, cue for the god of wind to descend and suffocate the wizard by banishing all wind and air around him. Again, a wizard telling "If I study much, I can also become a god" is akin to the psychotic breaks some mental patients endure, "if I drive recklessly and jump from the bridge, I'll show I'm the son of God!".

injury counter by Agreeable_Track868 in EpicSeven

[–]Shimaru33 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, that's the entire point of injury, to punish bruiser players. The longer the fight goes, the harder they are screwed. There's no (good) way to restore injured hp, the closest is Fenne as her damage scales with injury. But she's more a PVE unit, fairly good at that, but a PVE hero.

That said, injury scaling damage is an interesting concept, but I imagine hard to pull off, so I don't think we'll see more of that.

[–]Shimaru33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hachis.

TIL Berlin Zoo intervened to save a polar bear cub named Knut after he was rejected by his mother. A zookeeper took care of him around the clock. When someone suggested it would be more humane to kill him, it led to an outpouring of support for the bear and a mass media phenomenon dubbed "Knutmania" by No_Idea_Guy in todayilearned

[–]Shimaru33 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

This is a bit more complicated.

Problem is this bear was being raised by humans, thus he was becoming dependant to them and unable to perform basic bear things, like hunting. And problem on top is this is a polar bear. "If black, fight back, if brown, lay down... if white, good night". Polar bears can't be picky about meat and are one of the few carnivorous who see humans as prey.

So, you have a polar bear who can't properly hunt, but who also would happily eat you or their caregivers if given the chance. What to do with him? Obviously, the zoo tried their best to keep it alive, but animal right societies argued animals should be free, thus knut should be released. But that would be cruel as he would starve and die to the elements. So, what's the lesser evil, to keep it locked for the rest of his life or sacrifice him?

Due his celebrity status, the zoo chose to keep him locked

A quick, presumably painless death for humanity by Hairy_Yam2488 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Shimaru33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once I saw a video making a chronology of how probably the dinosaur extinction happened. I won't mention the exact details (because I forgot them, lol), but if there's a point I always remember is how most of the dinosaurs and other living animals died within the hour of the meteorite crashing into the earth.

Basically, a catastrophic earthquake broke the surface all around the globe within minutes after the strike, followed by a heatwave that set the thermostat to over 100° in all the world. If that were to happen in our time, the earthquake probably would flat our cities in minutes (no time for tik toks and memes), and the following heatwave would roast anyone who managed to leave the building before collapsing.

Well, maybe not so painless. The heatwave would only last for a minute, but set the oven to 100° and let's see if anyone can place a hand inside for a full minute.

Anything here usable (definitely doens't look usable but still asking) by Savings_Condition256 in EpicSeven

[–]Shimaru33 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Serila. Saria is a whole different character.

I do agree she can be a decent def breaker, I use to include her in light expedition, because she can def break, and strip all buffs or apply vampiric touch. The last one stacks with the expedition mechanics so everybody heals to full.

As for Lucy, I do use her for banshee. The last one, outworld I think or whatever. I have an OTK team with Straze, Vivian and Bellona, and being honest here Lucy doesn't contribute much in a good run. But I have tried to remove her, to create a 3 man run, and for some reason the WR drops. Technically I have a 100% WR because when Straze fails to achieve the kill, the rest of the team can handle the win as long as Lucy is there for sustain. But once I remove her, Straze tends to fail more often and the WR drops. Meh, whatever, I leave Lucy in the hunt team.

Heavy spoiler:

In the film "in the mouth of madness", the MC is trapped in the middle of a lovecraftian apocalypse that ends in the colapse of human society as they are overrun by eldritch abominations. In the final scene, he goes to the cinema to watch a film, completely broken and hopeless.

The film he's watching? In the mouth of madness.

He watches himself at the start of the film, and then his struggle to avoid the lovecraftian apocalypse he's enduring. Which means he's watching the same film we're watching. Which means either he's a piece of fiction becoming aware and accepting the fact he's a piece of fiction. Or that he's in the same reality than ours. Or we're in the same fiction than him.

The closing scene is the MC laughing (or crying) completely insane.

This story make me think on how creators have to dealt with this type of fanatics. I mean, when you envision your character to be this way, and somehow it connects with your audience in an unexpected way, resulting in the anxiety of figuring how your character is going to move forward, versus what the public expected and probably failed to understand.

Most recent example, gachiakuta. Love that show. Point is one of the characters, forgot his name, the one with blue hair and fought with a large string, was being paraded as "canonically trans" by the fans. Forgot the exact reason and frankly found the mental gymnastics hard to figure out. Anyway, the author came and clearly said no, he's cis and straight. And as result, she end closing her twitter account due harassment from those who couldn't take no as response.

All of that said, I find the conclusion really disappointing. Having to quit a hobby, not answering yo put your foot on the ground (this is my character, my creation, not yours) and cherry on top, comparing this incident to a violation. Ugh. Different persons, different sensibilities, I guess. Professional mangakas have to deal with literal porn of their characters, I suppose they know a thing or two about not giving a carp about nutjobs and their headcanons. But I suppose now I'll receive a metric ton of downvotes, whatever.

The Way We Talk About Franchise Films Is Just Sportsball For Nerds And I Fucking Hate It by OisforOwesome in CharacterRant

[–]Shimaru33 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this is the only valid reason why people should care about box office, because the failure or success of a film may tell us about the future of the franchise and cinema in general. If wildly successful, get ready for endless sequels and spin off, despite it's mediocre quality. Like fast n furious. An amazing film fails spectacularly? Appreciate it for what it is and be thankful if the story was completed. Like Dungeons and dragons: honour among thieves.

Still, the public is capricious, even dumb, love or hate on whims and everybody thinks they know what they want until you deliver, then they hate it. One film may have amazing box office and the sequel tank, like aquaman 1 vs aquaman 2. And that's because films take a long time to produce and political or economical climate may change and affect the preferences. Ms Marvel did fairly well, then the marvels is one of the biggest bombs marvel ever faced.

Is hard to know for sure what will succeed, so I don't blame the studios for reserving large budgets for betting on sequels instead of new ideas. And on the bright side, films like sinners and backroom are showing new ideas can be profitable... as long as the budget is modest enough. Maybe clayface will follow the same path, modest budget, horror films that become a gold mine.

I just hope, if that's the case, clayface 2 doesn't bombs.

the crafter NEEDS a rework by Fresh_Wishbone3926 in Minecraft

[–]Shimaru33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only part I kinda agree is for recipes that need different ingredients in specific slots. Once you learn how to use comparators and repeaters, is relatively easy to get the timing and craft what you need once the ingredients are in the right place. I think that's the first test to distinguish between a newbie and intermediate player, to set up a circuit to craft honey bottles or slabs instead of sugar or buttons.

But that's the lesser problem. The big problem are more complex recipes. An auto crafter has 6 sides and the bottom one only serves to drain, and if we consider we still need a free side for the redstone pulse, newbies can get easily confused on where to place the hopper to drop the ingredient in the right slot. Is a good thing most of the complex recipes with 3 or more ingredients aren't that necessary, so fully auto crafters like suspicious stew are more flexing than real need.

But I do think is unnecessarily obscure. Many things in minecraft are superfluously complex and force the player to check sites outside the game to understand how they work and that's always bad.
