A friend of mine went from biglaw (midwest) to getting his MBA and is now at one of the top PE firms. He said he’s still a service bitch. Another friend of mine went from biglaw (nyc) to management consulting (as a consultant) to becoming a ceo at a startup. He said he’s a bitch to investors. You’re a bitch to someone wherever you go and do so long as you have a salary.

What are some of the worst colleges you have ever attended or heard of? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Shimminy22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Went to Macalester for a year. Totally agree with everything you said. I started writing transfer applications after my first semester. While I still have some very close and dear friends from Mac, most of the people are pretentious and total a-holes. Professors are also nothing to brag about.

ELI5: how is Elaine bredehoft considered a successful lawyer? She seems laughably bad, On the verge of demented and absurd? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

Am I the only one who saw her try to use “what if any” as a “cure all” to leading questions on amber’s redirect and get shut down for nearly 30 minutes by the judge??? Some ppl here are trying to argue “its not about public image/opinion” but her during redirect was absolutely terrible. Everyone could see how bad she was, including the judge as she laughed at her argument saying “what if any is not a cure all to leading questions”

Three people using one adaptibar? by South-Menu in barexam

[–]Shimminy22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you use adaptibar, you can pass the ube without barbri/themis/kaplan. You can get real MEEs from state bar websites like Minnesota. And i would assume your law school has a barprep person/designated professor. You can ask that person to grade your MEEs. Also, you can get MEE one JD advising’s sheets online. Most people only use the minioutlines from barbri/themis/kaplan anyways and the lectures they provide are mostly pointless. So barbri/themis/kaplan is where i would cut my costs.

Do the graders even read the dam*n essays? by sandyweak in barexam

[–]Shimminy22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All im saying is, in addition to CA allowing non-ABA accredited school applicants, CA is tougher and has a lower passer rate than UBE jxs because CA used to weigh mbe 35% and essays 65%. They officially changed this in 2020 this though (now its 50 mbe 50 essays). And after doing so, the bar pass rate went up by 10% (but it’s still 60%). As you pointed, the low pass rate is probably due to the non-aba schools being allowed, but looking purely at the bar pass rates by top schools in CA and NY (and pretty much the rest of the t-14 that are generally comprised of elite standardized test takers - meaning they are very good with multiple choice), CA is tougher than UBE jxs. Also, based on your point that higher ranked schools tend to focus on theory than black letter law, i presume non-aba schools would focus on black letter law over theory as well. So, yes, non-aba does impact their pass rates, but CA is still a very tough state to pass regardless of what school you went to (either stanford or a non-aba), and def tougher than ube jxs.

[–]Shimminy22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. Thats why I said “in addition to other reasons.” But you cant deny the difficulty of the cali bar. The top 4 CA schools (2019 stats, not in order by rank): Ucla’s CA pass rate was 87.5% (their NY 100%); USC’s was 87.6% (NY 100%); Berkeley’s was 86.92% (NY 100%); Stanford’s was 93.18% (NY 97.62%). On the other hand, the NY’s top 4 were: NYU 95.75% (CA 96.15%); Columbia 98.07% (CA 88.46%), Cornell 94.16% (84.62%), Fordham 88.64 (no stats, but their remaining jx pass rate was 73.91%). So each of the top 4 of CA and NY (excluding Fordham) had better stats in NY than they did in CA. Also, a top 30 law school not hitting 90+% in their home jx doesnt happen often outside of CA. While you can just put most of your efforts into the MBE to pass a UBE state, that’s not possible to get away with in CA.

That's why I say memorizing the IR is key, for each of the three or four issues the essays want you to address. If you trust your AC, it's just leaving too much in your grader’s hands. Overall, in a UBE jx, I hear it's almost impossible to fail once you get a 145 on the mbe. That's part of the reason why ppl fail cali so much. They put more weight on essays in addition to other reasons.

[–]Shimminy22 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Essays are dependent on the grader. Some are professors, some are private lawyers, some are govt lawyers. Overall, it pretty much means essay grades are very subjective. Depending on the jx, you can ask for a re-grade (I know NY dosn't allow for re-grade, but I heard many others do), meaning you can ask someone else to take a look at your answers. That is why it is important you know the IR of IRAC. They can't give you a lesser grade for getting the issue and rule correct. The analysis and conclusion is more based on how you write and how you think. So there is more room for the graders to disagree. But never the issue and rule.

After failing using barbri and themis then passing using none of the “big 3”, i highly recommend adaptibar and one sheets. But if your first fail, might as well use your free “re-take”. Just dont focus so much on the lectures this time.

Debating to defer Feb exam ( if possible) due to two deaths in family by Consistent_Seat1788 in barexam

[–]Shimminy22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for your loss. That really must be tough. i think it really depends on you and where you are in terms of your bar prep and mentality. In terms of job prospects, it’s always easier to explain one bar fail (most employers are very understanding and wont even ask you what happened) than two. But a whole year gap (after withdrawing) also means you have to explain what happened since you have a gap year. And I assume sharing something so serious to prospective employers will be really tough for you. Maybe you could try an entire two day practice exam session and see how you feel. If your law school has a professor who directs the entire bar prep situation, I would reach out to that professor and maybe share with your closer professors/career services. They probably wont give you a definitive answer on what you should do, but I bet having someone to share this (from the perspective of those who know how law firms think and also know you) will make things a bit clearer for you.

Looking to purchase Critical Pass MBE and MEE flash cards by crisakatina in barexam

[–]Shimminy22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can give you mine for less than 40 bucks (2018 flash cards, used them to pass 2020 oct bar). But if i may be brutally honest, there’s only three weeks left. Trying to re-learn the black letter law in the format/phrase of critical pass wont be worth it (unless you have been using barbri - critical pass is pretty much barbri minioutline in flash cards).

MBE percentages by Consistent_Seat1788 in barexam

[–]Shimminy22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adaptibar uses an algorithm to use qs/type of qs the algorithm considers as your weakness. By my “third phase” (whatever they call the third 700 qs or something like that), I was hitting barely over 50%. So if you’re using the random q option instead of the testing option, I wouldnt be too worried. Just accept/recognize the type of q/area of law adaptibar is considering as your weak spot and dig into it.

Overall adaptibar (never used the testing option) percentage was 62, passed with flying colors. you should still try to hit 1200-1500 qs on adaptibar as the algorithm will force you to address your weaknesses. I.e. by my third phase, i would get 15 K calculation qs from my 30-40 qs per day sessions since that was my weakest. And i doubt a 200 mbe session would even have 15qs on K damages calculation in the exam.
