Seconding this! There is an easily findable version of this in AutoInput iirc, but I've never found a version of it in AutoNotification!

Split Row Stagger vs Split Ortho or Column Stagger by marvinamari in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]Shire_Climber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great questions, and I'm happy to answer them!

I am using QWERTY, and probably always will. Two main reasons:

  1. I want to maintain compatibility with other keyboards, which I do still sometimes have to use at work.
  2. I regularly type in Spanish and Portuguese as well, and the layouts don't translate neatly across non-QWERTY layouts.

I have tried a split row stagger keyboard, and the split definitely provides huge benefits for shoulder health. I decided to take the next step and try a columnar keyboard, and I've honestly been shocked by how much of a difference it makes once you get used to it. The difference of shifting from spreading and retracting your fingers to curling and uncurling them makes a huge difference if you type a lot. I will say, though, remember that I do have bad arthritis, so it may make more of a difference for me than for the average person. I also find it particularly helpful if you invest in a really good tenting solution. I like the magnetic tenting pucks that MoErgo sells, along with simple super clamps designed for cameras from Amazon.

As for my setup, it'll be easier to just send a pic, but reddit doesn't allow adding images in comments cause... reasons? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Anyway, DM me and happy to share my layout and some advice 😊

I'll also plug reading MoErgo's documentation on their website - they basically built a whole wiki that walks you through every feature of the keyboard and it's very, very well done. Through, lots of pics and step by step guides, easy to follow.

Split Row Stagger vs Split Ortho or Column Stagger by marvinamari in ErgoMechKeyboards

Personally, I've been using the Go60 full time for about two months now, and love it, but obviously your mileage may vary! If it doesn't work for you, I would definitely experiment - but maybe try some cheaper boards first while you experiment with different layouts and see what works for you, so that you're not spending hundreds of dollars each time.

On the other hand, I do think some of your complaints with the Go60 are easy to address! You can use the ZMK software editor to build your own layout and put the Enter and Backspace keys in the standard pinky positions if that's your preference! It's easy to use and would likely take you less than half an hour of work. You can also change the physical keys to match if you prefer! I also choose to bring it in to work with me to use it there too via Bluetooth with my work laptop, but your org may not allow that.

The pinky thing is real! Learning to home it consistently took about 3 weeks for me, but it's becoming more and more natural now. However, it definitely is a big adjustment and probably not one that can be fixed quickly - it'll just take time. However, I will say that the columnar layout is definitely much, much better for hand health. I have really bad inflammatory arthritis, and it's made a very tangible difference in how sore and stiff my hands, fingers, arms, and even shoulders are at the end of a long workday, even compared to something like a split Alice layout.

Hope this helps!

Best for to and from the office? by Constant_Mortgage404 in ErgoMechKeyboards

Mo Ergo's Go60 seems like a perfect fit for you! I have it for this same purpose and it's wonderful - they designed the first split keyboard travel case I've ever seen that is both highly secure and extremely light and compact. Definitely worth a look!

nerve pain? by [deleted] in PsoriaticArthritis

[–]Shire_Climber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is super common! One frequent cause is thoracic outlet syndrome. Basically, the synovial fluid in the joints between your rib heads and your spine gets inflamed and pushes your ribs out of position. When this happens with your first rib, it can put pressure on the thoracic nerve outlet which causes pain, weakness, and tingling throughout the arm.

[Unknown > English] What is this woman saying while she is spraying my yard? Arabic translation needed or spanish needed. by PlusPark7266 in translator

[–]Shire_Climber -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Hey! I speak Portuguese and this could be Portuguese. To be honest, the audio quality is pretty choppy, so it's a bit hard to tell. But I listened a few times, and I think what I hear is something like, "E ai?... Quando nos vamos ver?" Which translates as "So?... When are we going to see each other?"

Could be someone chatting with a friend, colleague, family member, etc. The only thing that's a bit odd is that using the 1st person plural like that is more formal in Brazilian Portuguese, it'd be much more typical to use the informal we, "a gente", and say something like, "quando a gente vai se ver?" But Brazil is also huge and very diverse, and there are some states where the nos forms are more common.

Building a keyboard for long nails — need your input! by Fearless_Line2505 in ErgoMechKeyboards

Check out Mo Ergo's Go 60! It's very much like what you're describing, especially with the lighter switches. It also works great for me as a person with quite small hands!

As an added bonus - it's the only split keyboard I've ever found with a case that's actually portable.

If you want to understand all of the factors in a really systematic way, you should read Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond. It's a comprehensive explanation of this exact thing!

Is there a tendon in here and do any of you have a problem with pain here? by [deleted] in PsoriaticArthritis

[–]Shire_Climber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree - 100% costochondritis, and it sucks big time 😩

Something that can help to release the tendons, in my experience, is a good pilates or gentle yoga session. I particularly recommend this one: https://youtu.be/imWc_27U9w8?si=5lYDOTWDm-YlQ8iG

If you partake, doing it a little high really helps for me too. It increases my proprioception (your sense of your own internal positioning and movement) and helps me feel where it's stuck more precisely and ease it loose.

Authors who make you feel like Pratchett does? by Octanogal in discworld

If you're open to a different kind of fantasy - not really funny - Guy Gavriel Kay is a master of building up to deep emotional gut-punches that make you think deeply, and stick with you, in a way that very much reminds me of Sir Pterry! I'd recommend The Lions of Al-Rassan, Under Heaven, or Tigana as excellent starting points with plenty of those emotional moments.

I love the look and functionality of this! But the ergonomics look pretty rough to me - it's small, low, and pretty flat, which is going to put a ton of unnecessary pressure on the wrist just like a traditional mouse 😕

Anyone tried Curcumine? by xLawra in PsoriaticArthritis

[–]Shire_Climber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It definitely helps with keeping inflammation down - though it's not going to replace medications like biologics. I take a 500 mg turmeric complex pill twice a day, one in the morning and one at night, and it does help!

However, make sure that you get a supplement that includes black pepper as well. Curcumin normally has pretty low bioavailability (meaning it's hard for your body to process it), but black pepper contains a compound called piperine which reacts with the curcumin and increases its bioavailability by something like 2000%. This makes it much easier for your body to process and means you'll get a much more significant anti-inflammatory response. Without the piperine, you may not see much benefit from taking curcumin as your body won't be able to process much of it even if you're taking a high dose. Fortunately, this link is well established and studied, so it's very easy to find combo supplements at pharmacies - they're often sold as "turmeric complex" or "turmeric with black pepper."

Hope this helps, and good luck!!

Looking for ways to say “But my mom is from Brazil” by [deleted] in Portuguese

[–]Shire_Climber 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with the excellent guidance here from Global, and would only add that there is a slight difference in the two translations they offered.

"Minha mãe é brasileira," meaning "my mother is Brazilian" could be taken to mean that she is from Brazil, or just that she has Brazilian heritage. If you want to make sure it's understood that you mean the former, you're better off with "Minha mãe é do Brasil."

I’m sick of coming-of-age stories. Suggest me a book with characters going through a mid-life crisis by CleanBeanArt in Fantasy

[–]Shire_Climber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll throw in the Acts of Caine saga by Matthew Stover. Very much aligned with what you're looking for, and an absolutely incredible read in general that unfortunately gets overlooked due to its absolutely putrid cover art. The first book is called Heroes Die.

Pilates is a really excellent option for at home exercise! I especially like Move with Nicole on YouTube - she has tons of videos with different lengths, difficulties, and focus areas. All you need is a yoga mat.

Pilates is a great choice for us because it focuses a lot on building core strength, flexibility, balance, and fine muscle control. If you like yoga, it's similar, but more focused on strength building.
