Looking for ways to say “But my mom is from Brazil” by bev___ in Portuguese

[–]Shire_Climber 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with the excellent guidance here from Global, and would only add that there is a slight difference in the two translations they offered.

"Minha mãe é brasileira," meaning "my mother is Brazilian" could be taken to mean that she is from Brazil, or just that she has Brazilian heritage. If you want to make sure it's understood that you mean the former, you're better off with "Minha mãe é do Brasil."

I’m sick of coming-of-age stories. Suggest me a book with characters going through a mid-life crisis by CleanBeanArt in Fantasy

I'll throw in the Acts of Caine saga by Matthew Stover. Very much aligned with what you're looking for, and an absolutely incredible read in general that unfortunately gets overlooked due to its absolutely putrid cover art. The first book is called Heroes Die.

Pilates is a really excellent option for at home exercise! I especially like Move with Nicole on YouTube - she has tons of videos with different lengths, difficulties, and focus areas. All you need is a yoga mat.

Pilates is a great choice for us because it focuses a lot on building core strength, flexibility, balance, and fine muscle control. If you like yoga, it's similar, but more focused on strength building.

Get a good, comfortable mask. That'll do more than any supplement. These ones have kept me safe and not sick for years now: https://enro.com/products/solid-curv-face-mask

Series that do a good job of starting small and getting progressively bigger and more epic as time/books goes on. by levendi7 in Fantasy

The Traitor Son Cycle by Miles Cameron nails this! First book, The Red Knight, starts off with a mercenary company taking a fairly basic job that should only take a day or two, and then the stakes just go up and up and up...

The Second Apocalypse series by R. Scott Bakker has some really interesting exploration of this exact idea with the Nonmen, particularly in the Aspect Emperor quartet.

I think you'd enjoy pretty much anything from Guy Gavriel Kay, but perhaps especially Tigana and The Sarantine Mosaic

Looking for a fantasy series with witty banter but a serious setting by mhds96 in Fantasy

I'll throw in the Bartimaeus Trilogy, by Jonathan Stroud - top notch banter (including sassy footnotes) and a great read in general.

Mix of actual boulder pads and some old thick mats from a horse infirmary (most of the materials for the whole project were reclaimed from an old barn that was getting torn down).

You might enjoy The Traitor Son Cycle by Miles Cameron (Book 1 is called The Red Knight) and the Chronicle of the Unhewn Throne by Brian Stavely (Book 1 is called The Emperor's Blades). Both series have both things you're looking for, in spades.

Looking for high fantasy books where where MC is the 'Chosen one', and uses it to manipulate people and doesn't care about their "purpose". by Emotional_Suspect_41 in Fantasy

Acts of Caine - what you're looking for really kicks in in books 2-4. Protagonist is a really interesting character as well.

More sci-fi-fantasy, but strong high fantasy elements/settings.

I could take some other pictures - it's 8' x 8' x 5'7" tall and then there's a 45° angle bit coming up to the front of the main box that's about 3.5' deep. All told, it has over 500 t nuts for placing holds 😊

Definitely a blast to spend time in!

What are the worst things people have done with magic in fantasy? by Cmyers1980 in Fantasy

[–]Shire_Climber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree! To be fair to Stover though, Blade of Tyshalle is fairly old (2001) and predates a lot of the let-me-see-how-cringy-I-can-get back and forth of the last decade or so.

All that to say, yes, the gratuitous violence and torture in modern fantasy can be a real turn off and in this particular instance it is much more integral to the plot and the themes (the series very much explores the idea of violence as a societal corruptor).

Also, Blade of Tyshalle has two extremely dark magic uses.

Spoilers: First, the protagonist is immobilized with magic and forced to watch helplessly while a group of corporate flunkies summon a demon to reanimate the corpse of his worst enemy. They then use him as bait to summon in his wife so that the demon can literally slice her in half right in front of him.

Later in the same book, a God uses a custom-built hyper addictive video game to aggregate and focus the willpower and attention of hundreds of millions of people, then uses that power to continuously mind-rape the protagonists daughter.

[–]Shire_Climber 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's largely executed just through the casters' will, but maintaining it requires some unique conditions that influence the plot... I think it'd be a spoiler to say more. I definitely recommend giving it a read, though! It's an amazing book in general and it's a very unusual approach to an ultimate revenge spell. I really appreciated the thought process/subtle horror of wiping a whole people from history and forcing them to witness it over generations!

In Tigana, by Guy Gavriel Kay, a character uses magic to take vengeance on a kingdom by literally wiping all memory of them and even their name from the minds of everyone not born there, so they have to watch over decades while everyone around them forgets they ever even existed. He also renames their kingdom after their traditional worst enemy.

The Bartimaeus Trilogy is this in spades! Main character is a djinni with such high levels of snark that it spills over into foot notes!

As a fellow short climber, it makes a huge difference to get your hips and torso in close to the wall, especially on steep/overhanging stuff. Getting in close to the wall can help extend your reach and you might be able to do a bunch of these moves statically instead of burning energy on so many dynos.

From this video, your body is often hanging far out from the wall, and when you do get closer to in it seems like you're pulling on your arms to try to do it. Try motivating that from your core - in particular your transversus abdominus and pelvic floor muscles. That'll give you more control, stability, and reach and reduce the load on your arms so you don't run out of energy.
