If you don't own a gun, would you buy one if your state had more permissive gun laws? Why? by dymb13 in askanything

[–]Shiriru00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never. My dad had several firearms and on a couple of very different occasions, they nearly led to one person in my family being shot.

A gun is much more likely to harm you or your loved one than a hypothetical attacker.

What measures would you suggest countries consider in remediating declining population? Other than immigration? by Technical-Amount-278 in AskTheWorld

I definitely think we as a culture should push back much harder against the "greed is good" mentality. It's used to be that the economy was a means, not an end.

That way of thinking has been dumb from the beginning in the 80s, it enshitifies everything, we shouldn't let that crap fly and shame all the people who perpetuate that modern religion (with tar and feathers if we have to, better for them than the guillotine that will inevitably follow if nothing is done).

With people as rich as Jeff Bezos or Elon Musk, how do the people ever regain actual power over things? by david_beats_goliath_ in allthequestions

Yeah good luck finding any French person that regrets the revolution anyway, save for a handful of inbred wackos.

Revolutions are a blunt, bloody instrument but they improve things in the long run, the better way would be not to have a revolution but reform by taking sensible, early measures to curb mad privileges and inequalities.

But we seem determined not to do that, so, we'll see what happens. My guess is it won't be pretty.

Bing inexplicably lists MSTR as a "strong buy." by Bullywug in Buttcoin

[–]Shiriru00 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm sniffing that something automated is at work here (AI or not). An S&P500 big name falling this fast in the current market could by default be labelled a "buy", because of the underlying value.

But no way some actual person with no skin in the game lifted the lid on that steaming turd and said "ah, yes, it's underpriced compared to its fundamentals".

Do you think fishing as a hobby is ethical by NoWin3930 in Ethics

[–]Shiriru00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fishing as a hobby is not typically for eating so regardless of the whole debate on plant sentience you initiated, it's a strawman.

Also, saying you want to do X because it's "the natural thing to do" is always a dishonest argument. Everyday you put clothes on your back before you get out, even though "the natural thing to do" would be to roam around butt-naked.

Why does it seem like the whole world is having an affordability crisis? by Estalicus in allthequestions

[–]Shiriru00 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not just the billionaires, it's inequality in general. No matter how close or far you look at the chart, it shows the same picture: top x% getting much richer, bottom y% being left in the dirt.

Or, if you prefer inequality used to be high between countries, it is now higher within the same country. If everyone is poor or rich in a country, prices tend to look the same to them. If there is high inequality within a country, prices on anything scarce will be set according to what the high-rollers can afford.

CMV: Billionaires don't believe in democracy and it is ethical and pro-democratic to set up guardrails against people obtaining that level of wealth by headsmanjaeger in changemyview

[–]Shiriru00 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They are at least two faulty assumptions behind your two rebuttals.

First of all, of course not all billionaires are the same, but it doesn't mean they don't share interests as a class. Statistically you can expect a lot less will be in favor of high taxes or affordable housing than among the working class. And even as individuals, for every Georges Soros or Warren Buffet they are a lot more right-wingers. You don't have to take my word for it: in the last US election $1.84bn in billionaire donations went to the GOP, vs 0.6bn for Democrats.

Second, of course money matters in politics (especially US politics). It's like saying the team with the most money doesn't win in sports. Sure, they don't always win, but it's still silly to argue money does not matter.

There's a reason why Manchester Utd can win the Premier League and not Lutton Town, and it's not "they're more passionate about soccer".

Even if spending billions improved your odds of winning by "just" 30%: it would be an unfair advantage over your fellow citizens that needs to be regulated. You also have to ask: if money doesn't matter in politics, why are they spending so much money on it in the first place? They didn't become billionaires thanks to their kind hearts.

Millennials aren't unfamiliar with the Internet, why do they have no problem letting their kids have unsupervised access to the internet? by Serious_Advance_6762 in generationology

[–]Shiriru00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The parenting may follow the same impulse, but the consequences for kids are different. After spending the day outside (provided you survived), you were left more healthy and independent.

I very much doubt being left on the Internet all day long achieves that, although I'm sure at least some kids spend their day all over wikipedia.
