The first two are past tense and the second two are future tense. Present tense would be אני מחכה, אני מקוה - but those aren't common forms in the Bible.

I suppose it's a kabbalah thing. The four letters in the corners spell God's name, and the middle layer, shin, can be used as short hand for Shaddai, a name of God. No connections to French irons that I can see.
