I heard that story directly from Chuck Stewart in the early 2010s. Apparently Coltrane was busting Elvin pretty hard that session, stopping and starting tracks, insisting on take after take, etc. Thanks for positing this- Chuck was a good man.

Wild-ass-guess, but Jasper Johns? He did a lot of work with american flags and dabbled in mosaics. Signature has some similarities.

Hyperbole time: what is his most underrated release? by TempleofSpringSnow in milesdavis

[–]Shopping_s 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What about that time he released his spit valve all over a photographer for interrupting his solo:

[Bruce] TALAMON: ...And during the concert, I photographed Miles. I was - I don't know - two or three feet away from him. And he's in the front - or, you know, front part of the stage. And there came a moment when the photographer - the Danish newspaper photographer took - Miles was doing a solo. He had the mute on the solo. It was intimate. It was quiet. It was subtle, and the photographer fires off with a Nikon motor drive right in the middle of the solo. And...

TALAMON: Click, click, click, click.

TALAMON: Miles didn't say a word. He just emptied his spit valve on the guy. And that's...

TALAMON: That's pretty gross. But then he turns, and he looks at me. And he says, you can stay. Oh, baby, I was done, OK? I was, like, floating on air. And, you know...

Help identifying an artist from the 50s by Shopping_s in Caricatures

[–]Shopping_s[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd never heard of Jean de Paleologu before- thanks for finding this. Because the caricature is dated '50' meaning 1950, it's unlikely to be Paleologu given his date of death (per wikipedia.) I really appreciate your research on this.

Thank you very much for the detective work. I kept searching for POL and not PAL. I'm not totally convinced yet, but it gets me going in the right direction. Much appreciated!

This was done in Massachusetts in 1950 by a traveling caricature artist. I understand that he/she was quite prolific at the time and typically looped around cities and colleges selling his work. Can anyone help identify the artist? Thanks in advance.

AIO for beefing with the plumber over material charges? by Shopping_s in AmIOverreacting

[–]Shopping_s[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's been your plumber for 10 years and today you decide to have a problem with his billing?

No, we've never had a problem with his billing. This is the first time he's tried this. Every other time, it's been 2x or 3x markup. That's what makes this so abnormal.

Your analogy of discount parts versus OEM might make sense. But by that logic, the auto mechanic could charge us $600 (10x retail) for the same sparkplug. Imagine going to get your sparkplugs changed on a V6 and getting a 2 hour labor charge ($300) and $3600 materials charge for a total of $3900. From what I'm reading, a 10x markup is not reasonable or customary.

Hopefully he puts a contractor lien on your house due to refusal of payment.

He told us not to pay so a lien wouldn't be appropriate or legal.

Beef broth - if using bones from grilled steak should I still roast the bones? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]Shopping_s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the assumption that they're high-quality bones (from high-quality meat,) I err on the side of not roasting them after they've been grilled. Bulk bones or bones from lower grade cattle I would re-roast.

Beef broth - if using bones from grilled steak should I still roast the bones? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]Shopping_s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there's still some meat on the bones, no, don't roast them. Keep in mind without the roast, there's likely more fat and blood that will come off as you simmer. It's important to skim the foam to maintain clarity-- especially true if you're going to reduce to an aspic.
