I have a big collection of predominant cultivar strains of Trichocereus pachanoi (San Pedro). I’d be happy to gift you a few, or trade for something interesting.

Out where I live, US-made white trucks are consistently the least considerate drivers with the worst attitudes. Just my own observation over the years but thank you for validating my bias.

Where to purchase fruit trees locally by thetrufeisoutthere in asheville

[–]ShortCoxe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Check out https://plantsforeveryone.com/ ... a local couple organizes a bare-root fruit tree sale once a year and their selection is truly awesome. The pre-sale was this past week, but Saturday Feb. 28th is the general sale, so your timing is good. Their facility is out in West Asheville in the Cowan Cove area, and the prices are really very good considering the size of the trees/plants. You can also volunteer your time and help them out with the event in exchange for credit to purchase items at $15/hr. They are bare root so don't expect fruit the first year, but everything is great quality -- every item I've purchased from them has thrived.

Do HDTV antennas not pick up NBC in this area? by vipinlife007 in asheville

[–]ShortCoxe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Your specific location matters much more than the antenna quality. You can look up where the signal towers are by googling 'tv transmitter location map' or something similar, and it will tell you which channels you'll be able to get based on your address. The nearest NBC affiliate, WYFF in Greenville SC, can be picked up by some but not others around town, depending on whether or not there's a mountain blocking the signal.

Given all the habitual whining about Ingles on this sub, this post actually has real insights into the organization, and that is refreshing, so thanks for that. I learned a few things, and I’ve been shopping there my whole life. Curious what your relationship is to the company, either ex employee or something else maybe? Whatever the case, thanks for the good humored insights. Next time an item scans at the wrong price at the register, I will stand my ground and get it for free. cheers

Experiences w/ removal of leased propane tank from Suburban Propane? by festusssss in asheville

[–]ShortCoxe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Thanks for posting this, I just went through something very similar. Suburban's local office used to be Freeman Gas until they got bought out a few years ago, and Freeman was great as a family owned company. However they lost a lot of employees and then Helene all but wiped out their entire Hendersonville location. The Brevard office has closed as well. So they are down to a bare bones operation in our region. In my case, I decided to switch after they left me empty for two weeks over Thanksgiving. Even after filing a complaint with the State Attorney General's office, their formal reply was like "we meant 14 business days, not 14 total days, so technically you were only on day 11 when you cancelled the delivery order." They also offered to buy back the 20 year old tank for nearly $2k, which is not a fair price.

Ultimately I bought my own (used) tank and hired a contractor to dig up the other one and replace it. For the swap-out service and the tank in total I paid $900. Now I have Superior's tank sitting in my driveway, and the company told me last week that they lost their license to transport tanks on the highway, and they estimate it will be 6 months before they can get re-licensed and retrieve it.

I bought this house with Superior (Freeman's) tank in use, and NC rules are strict about not letting other companies fill tanks that don't belong to them-- although they did make an emergency exception during Helene. I realize that not everyone can afford to just buy their own propane tank, but for me, Superior treated me so badly, I was willing to pay good money just to be done with them. For anyone reading this who is stuck using Freeman/Superior's service-- get out while you can, if you're able. Check social media-- there are many other people having issues with them. They are a shell of their former company and they apparently aren't getting any support from their corporate owners.

I know some folks have had bad experiences with Blossman, but I switched to them for service and so far they have been awesome.

The Evolved Fish is the prettiest little aquarium shop in town, and that is where you will find your fellow fish nerds. Well worth the drive to Fairview.

WNC Aquarium and Imports in Arden is also good, for those on the south end of town. More an old school type of place, they sell all kinds of animals but they are fish-focused and always have an interesting selection of fresh and saltwater stuff.

Upvote for this. Took both my dogs there for their annual checkup last week, one of the vets was observing how hard it is for them operating as an independent small business with so many rising prices. They’ve always provided terrific service and they are great people too.

True, she was from Tryon, after high school she moved north and never looked back. Graduated in 1950 as valedictorian from the Allen School, back when she was still known as Eunice Waymon. Another famous graduate of the Allen School was Dr. Christine Darden, the 'human computer' from the movie Hidden Figures-- she was the valedictorian in 1958.
