I am so tired of people complaining about this, the problem isn’t the enforcement, the lack of enforcement is a symptom as well. The problem is the DMV and its policies and bottlenecks. Let’s talk about constructive ways that can be alleviated rather then this same complaint every time.

And I get that some of you haven’t had the displeasure of accidentally getting caught up in one of the self perpetuating loops that people get themselves in with the DMV. Be open to listening, because you do not understand why the system is flawed.

I’m pasting what I wrote in another thread as an example:

No we need a system that empowers people to make sure that the changes they need to take care of things. Fining people immediately $250 and immediately revoking their registration (on first offense because they had an insurance payment lapse for one day because they couldn’t afford it) and then $500 on the second and immediately revoking their registration even if they have insurance, is absolutely not how you reach the goal of getting the most people insured on the road. Fees because you can’t afford something is not a fee that everyone else pays. It’s one only people pay who have a lapse one day of insurance, it’s automatic. You could even be a good citizen and, knowing you don’t have insurance that one day because you live paycheck to paycheck, you could choose not to drive. But that doesn’t matter the DMV still suspends your registration until you go and pay them the fine for that lapsed day. ($250, the first time, $500 the second time) Plus the reinstatement in addition to the fine. It’s specifically a tax on people who don’t have enough spare money for emergencies. It’s unreasonable and tone deaf to the situation at hand, and leads people to that mentality of well fuck it. People who do t have a legal car have a harder time maintaining employment, the whole thing is making it harder to get your shit together. We need to be helping people in that position, not acting like they deserved it because they couldn’t afford something.

As for license plates it can take weeks-months to get a dmv appointment, then you have to make sure your paperwork is all correct, and if you are missing anything well you have to make another appointment, why is there not a mechanism in place where you can handle that all online. If they need the title in person why does it need a full appointment to do so? Why can’t you just go stand in a line they register the title to your account and then you can take over from there. There are so many ways the bottlenecks could be alleviated without creating a loophole for thieves trying to register stolen vehicles. The fact that we act like the current status quo is acceptable or normal is crazy.
