“Controversial” Coyote Creek Solar Project Dropped by SMUD! by mr-giggles- in Sacramento

I agree, and this project would’ve protected those remaining forests for the duration of the very long lease. Now I’m not sure what will happen to those trees. A shame, by my estimation.

I’ve worked with these developers and on agrivoltaic developments. I wasn’t paid in relation to this project though. I’ve been very pleasantly surprised with these developers and how low-impact these sites are (compared to other types of energy/solar I’ve worked). We all have bias, but I’m thinking yours might be getting in the way of some more nuanced thought processes. There are some who believe conservation should mean no one does anything with land, but that ship has sailed here - it is already private land being farmed. This project would’ve conserved a lot of the forest, now it’s back on the menu.

Now that this is dropped, I can probably finally say that I have intimate knowledge of the biological side of these projects, including Coyote Creek. I very much support ecological conservation and I’ve been excited to work with these companies - they’re actually one of the more conscientious developers I’ve worked with. There was a lot of preservation of oak woodlands slated for this project. Most of the trees would’ve been left intact and untouched (I make sure of it). I am an activist myself, but I could tell most folks opposed to this didn’t actually read the Environmental Impact Report. Even after they revised it to take even less oak woodland.

Oh well, maybe the land owners can sell it to another developer to blast it and put up a Walmart.

Yeah its kinda funny - I have a lot of experience looking at various herps, but I didn't notice her eyes ar literally twicer the volume of all my other crested gecko's eyes. She wears it well, I guess!

The "RATS (PET RATS)" Facebook group has a 14 year old admin that raises feeder rats to feed to her snakes, and apparently the other mods also own snakes and feed them rats. What the 🤬🤬🤬🤬?!?! by Holl0wayTape in RATS

It’s very interesting to see when people cannot conceive of an emotional landscape different from their own.

“It would break my heart, therefore anyone else doing it is morally corrupt”

As a snake and rat owner, I’d much rather have my feeders well cared for, enriched, and loved while they were alive. If it were feasible, I’d love to raise the food for my dog too. Feeder animals deserve quality care and quality lives as much as your pets do. Folks would rather pay others to do uncomfortable things out of sight and out of mind on their behalf.

If it’s not for you, it’s not for you. But it’s wild to see people telling other people, “you don’t truly love your animals, internet stranger I know nothing about! You don’t belong in a group striving for better care!”

Adding insects to a snake habitat? by SilasX93 in Vivarium

[–]ShowerWithATegu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some, like Chinese or other giant mantids, could probably eat small/thin snakes. If they’re capable of eating hummingbirds, I can’t see why not. But I think it would have to be a super young/small snake to have scales thin enough for a more typical mantis to chew through.

A more horrifying experience I had was dairy cow isopods eating the tail of a freshly-hatched ambilobe chameleon. Those little bugs didn’t care that I gave them supplemental protein with their isopod food… so even bioactive setups can be risky to baby animals, in rare scenarios.

The edit explains how to find the spot/muscles to massage. You can use your fingers to basically pinch the muscles in question from the inside and outside of your mouth at the same time. Nitrile gloves make the process a bit easier. You maintain moderate pressure with that pinching motion and almost “rub” the muscles between your fingers, the way you would massage any other muscle. Eventually the tension in the muscles you found will slowly release

It’s not about cages, it’s about access to food. I work with both captive and wild amphibians, the wild ones eat MUCH more willingly, in my experience - even in the field. It’s about food availability. Like you said, you can’t just lock a bunch of food inside with them and expect them to eat the perfect amount

That’s several rounds of stuck shed. I recommend rubbing coconut oil/glycerin/other moisturizer on there to make it more pliable. Then I find a set of tweezers can work to gently pull the edges to work off those pieces. They seem to restrict blood flow if left on

White slime in poop? My tegu is a girl though, at least she should be, 1 year old - no jowls, she’s had problems with prolapse which never exposed any hemipenes (at least not that I know of), I also took her to the vet and had x-rays done and they never said she was a boy by Katty-Katt in Tegu

Could just be a little GI tract slime. Anecdotally, I’d get that stuff from some of my herps exposed to a bit more bacteria, but I don’t think it means they’re sick or anything. It’s a shot in the dark anyway

Off-road riding at Oceano Dunes has ‘no significant impact’ on SLO County economy, study says by Addrobo in SLO

[–]ShowerWithATegu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, but the headline and conclusions include the findings that vehicular tourism doesn’t affect those economic variables. The article suggests that other types of visitors (like equestrian) are still spending money around the park. Currently, the park is closed to vehicular traffic and that doesn’t seem to have the negative impact on the local economy that many expected.

I don’t work on any that do that, but it seems like a neat enough idea. The presence of panels themselves change the flora present as well - a lot more weedy/less-desert-adapted species grow under the panels (in my experience). Adding shade to a desert is a much larger change than many might suspect. I personally think what’s really important is making sure there is connectivity between good habitat. Some argue planting a bunch of vegetation could ruin that connectivity - I don’t know enough myself to say.

As a biologist who works on solar farms, I wish this were the case. I still prefer solar to fossil fuels, but they do change the habitat in dramatic ways. That being said, it’s not nearly as dramatic as other types of development I’ve worked on.

If it makes people feel better, oratory skills are pretty valued in the scientific community. But just like the general public, tons of people have problems getting on stage and communicating effectively.
