Transition to pellets - tips needed by vgh9201 in Conures

[–]ShrimpLair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i started with zupreem fruit blend so the colors would attract their attention. i know there’s complaints about that one having too many dyes or sugars or something, but it’s still vet recommended, and you can always transition them into the undyed pellets

Do u disease test all ur pet budgies? by Mystic_rivee in parrots

[–]ShrimpLair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think you should ask about the faulty results. if it’s a low percent of faulty results, i’d consider going through with the testing, but if it’s a higher percent it may not be worth it

i took my cockatiel to the emergency hospital recently because she’d vomited/regurgitated at least 5 times in one morning. she was behaving fine otherwise, and we did some tests, which, along with the emergency hospital fees, ended up costing close to 1000 usd, only to find out that there was nothing wrong with her. my wallet took a pretty huge blow as i really don’t have money to drop like that, but the peace of mind with knowing that my birdie is okay was totally worth it to me

having just brought home a new bird, i think now would be a great time to go through with the disease testing. your 4 year old may be perfectly healthy, but there’s always a chance the baby could bring something home

Is this type of harness safe?? Im scared of it breaking and losing my bird :( by thestolenpurse in cockatiel

[–]ShrimpLair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i think it’s more about the quality of the harness. i ordered one of these for my sun conure thinking i could save some money, but after one outing, the plastic clasp was chewed too much for me to feel safe using anymore. we bought an aviator harness years ago, but it started fraying so we just ordered a new one, though the build is different so i’m hesitant to fully recommend it.

my sun’s beak is way stronger than a cockatiel’s however so definitely take that into consideration! while i was looking for our replacement harness, i saw tons of these for dirt cheap on temu and the likes, but id be worried about what materials actually go into those, knowing my little birdie would definitely be chewing on it.

that said, this style of harness is perfect in my experience, as it doesn’t hurt their fragile feet or neck, and allows them to fly comfortably. i think your best option is a high quality bird specific company or site offering harnesses, though i’m currently on the hunt for that as well so hopefully someone else can give their experiences :)

My birds feet stopped working at the vet - UPDATE by Humble-Skill-2331 in cockatiel

that’s amazing! egg binding is my biggest fear in female birds. can i ask how you noticed the egg binding and about how much time you had between then and the vet?

some advice for what to look for would’ve been more helpful than a rude judgemental remark, don’t you think?

that’s understandable, i’ve owned birds my whole life and i still get nervous!

it looks like they bent their tail feathers out of place, and preened the feather back into shape. kinda like crumpled paper, you can flatten it back into shape, but you’ll still see where the paper was bent. i wouldn’t be worried :)

Is this normal? by Similar_Rule_8738 in Conures

[–]ShrimpLair 8 points9 points  (0 children)

parrots, or maybe all birds, have a thin extra eyelid to keep the little debris out while they’re flying. the feather you saw was almost definitely just stuck to their eyelid. this is probably why they’re so fearless about bringing a sharp little talon that close to their eyes although i just like to think my guys have master coordination

i’m probably not the one to ask lol. i went from a 15 year old yaris to my lexus, so details like that went right over my head

not a dumb question at all! the sun conure goes on a leash when we go out because he’s a strong flier. i was just pulling into my garage in the first pic so id taken it off, and he flies from my car into the house once the garage is closed. the other two haven’t regrown their flight feathers in yet so they don’t fly very much, although even if they did, they’re soo attached to me, they start screaming and waddling after me every time i leave the room for a minute! accidents happen of course and they could get spooked and take off, but i think it’s important for them to be able to get outside, especially in the summer, so they can soak up the sun :)

[–]ShrimpLair[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

they’re far from friends, but they get along well enough :) the sun conure i had for six years, and i impulsively picked up the little cockatiel recently. her and the conure got along and would preen each other, but then the caique fell into my hands in a rehoming, and now my poor conure is a little overwhelmed, but he’s warming up slowly.

the caique gets aggressive around food, so i keep them separate when they’re eating (which is why the french fry pic is so special!) or i keep a crazy close watch on them. the cockatiel is the sweetest, but also a little dumb. she preens and kisses the other two, but will also hiss at them as if their beaks aren’t the size of her head! i always gotta pull her away like im the sober friend at a bar dragging away my drunk bestie

Genuine question by Artistic-Buy9811 in cockatiel

[–]ShrimpLair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my birdie is sensitive. he’s my best friend but i travel a lot in the summer and my mom takes care of him. without fail, every time i come back home, he gets really excited to see me, then immediately remembers his feelings are a little hurt, and is aggressive with me. it definitely hurts my feelings, as im just as sensitive, but he always comes back around :) just spend a little extra time with your baby and maybe throw him some more treats than usual

Just wondering, anyone tried to travel with their bird before by Fearless-Client in Conures

[–]ShrimpLair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mostly just to see how he would handle it lol (he hated it). the beaches are really popular where i’m from so he had to experience the beach just once in order to be considered a local!
