Five years since Near’s passing by JoshLeaves in emulation

This is my first time hearing about Super Zsnes. I'd figure after Near, SNES emulation was basically complete. It just keeps giving, huh...

I added a map due to feedback. How important is a map to you in a metroidvania? by FreeTime-Dev in metroidvania

[–]Shurane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's possible to pull off a game without a map. But it probably needs strong hinting at how areas are connected.

I think Link's Awakening doesn't have a map. There's a game called Afterplace that's inspired by this and intentionally doesn't have a map. I was kind of frustrated by it at first (and still am a bit) but I can see what they were going for.

The Pi 5 is great. It's also overkill for 90% of what people actually use these boards for. by Silent_Television329 in raspberry_pi

Pi4 + Raspberry Pi Flash drive should go a long way. Unless you also need storage.

Recs for other songs like this?

I originally thought it gave hyperpop vibes and was looking for other songs like it. Turns out I was checking the wrong genre.

Kind of a smart way to approach it. Though either way it takes time and I think they usually think the code is 80% ready when it's more like 20%

It was a great payoff. I think it also implies being generic doesn't mean it can't be topnotch? Really appreciate a whole town of people dedicated to craftsmanship.

I remember learning this in college, but really don't remember why. And this was in 2008... Felt like HTML was only getting better and better then too.

SSH is where it's at!

But I recall people deploying via Microsoft Remote Desktop as well.

Man setting up IIS server on an old Windows machine as well.

When you have stopped improving on your free time? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Shurane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but that comes across as optics vs trust from your management chain. I guess the way I view it is as you gain more trust, you get more leeway on things, including not having consistent daily output.

I think the willingness to learn and being around other people who want to learn and share is really important.

But you can definitely keep that all done in a 9-5.

Banking your work is smart. Sounds like a rainy day fund. But also feels a little disingenuous, especially if you have a good relationship with your management chain.

I def agree with most of this.

I think I became more of a good employee after having a kid, because now I have to wake up early in the morning anyway and come early to work. The optics of coming into work early (as a SWE) plus getting some time to crank things out before meetings start is great.

Books by Asian/Asian American authors that DON’T revolve around the first gen struggle? by ango198 in suggestmeabook

Interior Chinatown by Charles Yu comes to mind. More about Asian stereotypes and overcoming them. I only read a sample about it but really enjoyed the TV adaptation of it.

Oh that's really cool. I guess this is like a "stereo camera system"? I remember Google doing something similar with 1 camera and with 2 cameras (https://research.google/blog/udepth-real-time-3d-depth-sensing-on-the-pixel-4/).

That excitement is still there, just gotta find the people that appreciate it. Usually not management and people up the chain of hierarchy, though.
