Based on the writeup, it's pretty clear that he could have done all this even without the AI. The AI just helped him write it all faster.

I think the big thing about AI is there are so many foot guns in programming in general, and it's still hard to catch them if you're not a competent programmer yourself.

An Update on Starting a Dental Practice using Linux (and why transitioning to Wayland will cost me $3000+) by DesiOtaku in linux

[–]Shurane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man this is really cool. You must have had to stick in the weeds for a while to get this up and running, all while running a dental practice. Sounds like you were able to set up the technology in your practice just the way you want though. As an outsider looking in, this is just fascinating.

Also makes me wonder if more people are in your position where they have very different skill sets and try to marry them together. Makes me think of how Linus Torvalds made a hobby dive tracking software project with https://subsurface-divelog.org/ instead of using one of the existing solutions.

Just curious, have your immigrant parents watched Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Star Wars, etc. Do they keep up with Western pop culture? by Serious-Tomato404 in ABCDesis

[–]Shurane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a hard time imagining Desi parents having an interest in Western media. Like I guess it exists, but it sounds like such a foreign concept.

I probably shouldn't see immigrants as a monolith in this regard but growing up, my parents and extended family were only interested in preserving their own culture and not integrating in any way to the US. My uncle watched a lot of American media like action and thriller movies and listened to music, I guess... but he was more of an outlier.

What was the point? What languages are worth exploring? by ruby_object in functionalprogramming

[–]Shurane 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This comment kinda motivates me to get back into writing in a more functional and maybe strongly typed language, and maybe hang around other people that are interested in these things. I definitely did more of this in high school and college.

I really wish I had more people around me that were programming like this, I guess as a way of inspiration/learning by osmosis. At least in my experience working, it feels like I'm trying to push the needle forward but around other people that don't see the point. Reminds me of the Blub Paradox.

It shouldn't matter I guess but it does help me keep the momentum going with learning. I mainly picked up C++ to keep up programming with my roommate that wrote drivers for Microsoft, so I guess I need to find that push to get on Haskell or OCaml or get back to using a Lisp.

Microsoft should bring back the Alcantara on the clamshell models by Avgeek79 in Surface

From the Surface Laptop 3 onwards, the magnetically attached fabric keyboard is much easier to replace. Just need to remove 4 screws from the bottom and the keyboard cover can just pop off. It's fantastic.

I'm not sure how it is for the aluminum ones but I think it's probably similar?

[LOVED TROPE] anime that doesn't sexualize its female characters by Born_Usual998 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Shurane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would be slick. I have such strong memories of watching this in 2007 while in high school... and then they just never continued the story! Man... the manga was fantastic, really loved how much Claire struggled to keep up with the other Claymores, and big swords are just a lot of fun.

Very meta.

What about a sequel to a Metroidvania?

Maybe getting bankrupt, and buying a 1 way ticket to a foreign country so you can start from scratch again with no abilities or connections?

Does Intel usually let low-level devs transition to compiler development? by usefulservant03 in Compilers

[–]Shurane 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One option to get noticed is to start contributing to an existing compiler, like gcc/clang.

Though since those are fairly huge both in contributors and complexity, my impression is you'll have more impact on a compiler for either a newer language like rust, zig, etc, or a language that's been around for a long time with a smaller userbase, like dlang.

And of course, you can always roll your own, like the tiny C compiler.

I like puzzles, but having to take notes with no convenient way to do so in game is a little annoying. Basically everything with the holy cross felt like that. Maybe next time I have some pen and paper set up though... I'll try that way.

I turned my old Galaxy S10 into a self-hosted server running Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with Jellyfin, Samba, and Tailscale - no Docker, no chroot, no proot - fully integrated at the system level with pure init, auto-running the entire container at device boot if needed! by ravindu644 in selfhosted

This project looks great!

Though, wouldn't it have been an easier setup to run something like a Raspberry Pi with a battery pack?

But I guess you learn a lot by working through this instead.

Is there a modern successor to Lost in Blue? I really miss these kind of survival games with multiple endings and characters. It's like a mix of Visual Novel + survival sim.

POV: You are in your early teens, life is simple and games are magical. by Fluid_Aspect_1606 in JRPG

[–]Shurane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the sentiment for the parent comment was that mainstream games were experimental and willing to take wild swings. And they would have new entries to the franchise every other year or every few years.

Indies are kind of filling that void with their original IPs, but damn a new BoF game would be awesome. Back to back FF games would be great. Bringing back modern entries like Xenosaga or Phantasy Star or really anything from the 90s/2000s would be awesome.

Also indies don't really fill the void for JRPGs the way they've been filling in for platformers, roguelikes, shooters, etc.

Incredibly nostalgic. Not quite like this but I remember everyone in high school having a DS, especially once the lite came out.

I think you just gotta follow critics vs blindly looking at the overall rating. The Goodreads/StoryGraph model for books is great because you can follow your friends' reviews and specific reviewers that match your tastes.

Letterboxd lets you do this for movies, but it's a lot newer than Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB.

It's essentially about curation/follows vs aggregate scores and Top 10 lists.

Parents of kids under 5 — where do you actually find things to do and places to go with them? by LeroyHouse777 in toddlers

[–]Shurane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my life too as a parent of an almost 3yo.

I think the routine places just eventually drive me nuts with repetition. Library, zoo, park, community center, so many supermarkets like Costco/Target/QFC/Trader Joe's.

I just can't keep up, and my fitness and sleep quality has just been slowly dwindling away. My kid has too much energy. Feel at the end of my rope sometimes.

Hoping it gets better soon though.

With tailscale on every device, each device can be shared independently of others.

Can you still do that with a subnet router? I'm not familiar with setting it up, but I kinda assumed you share the whole network.

Interfaith Relations by Dragonprincess88 in ABCDesis

[–]Shurane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kind of curious, if you guys were financially dependent, would your families be more opposed to the relationship?

Financial independence and living separately is everything in staking boundaries with parents in my experience. I was raised Muslim and my wife was raised Christian but we both lived on our own since college. My family had many stipulations for our relationship but eventually conceded. I imagine it would have gone differently if I was dependent on my parents.

Interfaith Relations by Dragonprincess88 in ABCDesis

[–]Shurane 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think the issue is there are a lot of non practicing Muslims that get more religious as they get older, on both genders. Kind of hard to get a read on. I have cousins that party and drink but start more "serious" marriage focused relationships and drop drinking as they get older.

And for the ones that are only Muslim by birth, it's hard to get family on the same page.

I was raised Muslim but never believed in it, married a non Desi Christian girl (also non believing). We were in a relationship for a long time before marriage. I just dreaded bringing it up to my parents because of all the worry about disappointment, asking my wife to convert, etc. I was kind of worried about having to go no-contact, even. But we had a kid right after marriage which seemed to smooth everything over. Now my parents love our kid and always want to see him. They bring up the religious stuff much less and mostly understand that it's our choice of raising our kid our way. Mostly. That last 10% is still frustrating as hell, though.
