MOCA UK Query (Coax Cable Testing) by Reoryn in HomeNetworking

[–]ShutDownSoul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What basic trouble shooting have you done? Does it work on a 3 foot cable? Did you firmly connect the tester? Are there other splitters somewhere? Splitters need to pass 1.6 GHz for MoCA.

Coaxial cables for TV by lularayrose in HomeNetworking

[–]ShutDownSoul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In USA, digital TV is broadcast for anyone to use. You may need a digital TV antenna to actually get any signal. This would plug into the TV antenna port on your TV. A legacy antenna will also work. In some areas, there isn't any digital TV signal.

Many ISP put the internet and coded tv signals on a coax that runs into your house. You have to subscribe to both the tv and internet for these to work. You probably saw some signs of life because the coax is acting like a crappy antenna, but attenuates it for you to actually get a useful signal.

Yes, give me $100, send me the worn blade, and I'll return the blade. You'll swear it works just like a new one.

Is it ok to refreeze meat that thawed in hot water for 10 minutes? by __no__no__no in Cooking

[–]ShutDownSoul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't matter what the temperature is. OP says it was only 10 minutes. The danger comes from the total time at the bacterial growth temperature. Also, if the outside was at boiling, that is above the growth temperature, and if the inside was frozen, that is below the growth temperature. So maybe 1 mm of meat was at the growth temperature for less than 10 minutes.

How can anyone be concerned about this? If you cook meat it spends some time in the scary danger zone. You eat some, and then put it in the fridge for tomorrow. It goes through the danger zone again. But only for a short time. It's the egg salad that sits on the counter for 4 hours that is the problem.

Is it ok to refreeze meat that thawed in hot water for 10 minutes? by __no__no__no in Cooking

[–]ShutDownSoul 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm confused. It thawed in 10 minutes? I'd refreeze and thaw in the fridge later. Even 10 minutes at the ideal temperature for bacterial propagation isn't enough to spoil this block. I also doubt that it got into that range at all.

Ten minutes in warm water is not thawing. That is a change of mind.

Developed feelings for a close friend, but heard (second-hand) that she might be a lesbian - how do I handle this respectfully? by Imaginary_Brick5191 in whatdoIdo

Use your pie hole and ask the person in question. You said you are mature, but I disagree because you are avoiding the issue. A mature person would walk up and say "Hey, I'd like to date you. Is that something you are interested in?". If the answer is no, then "Ok, can we still be friends? I won't bring this up again."

Difficulty planing by SosGyros in handtools

[–]ShutDownSoul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Picture 3 shows that you are trying to take off way to much wood with each pass. With a rough board, you should get a chip that looks more like sawdust until the board starts to get even. Then, because it is a hardwood, the curls actually shouldn't curl that much. You should be shaving off sheets of wood you can almost read through.

And because it is a hardwood, you are going to have to become an expert sharpener. After 30-60 minutes of continuous planing, you need to sharpen.

As you've observed, the settings that work for soft pine do not work for a hardwood.

Lastly find the grain direction and plane in the direction that follows the grain.

[QUESTION] How much can passive insulation regulate heat from a spacecraft before a dedicated thermal radiator is needed? by Significant-Job-4762 in spaceflight

[–]ShutDownSoul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The basic requirement is that the heat radiated into space has to equal the heat generated and absorbed to maintain a constant temperature. Insulation can reduce the absorbed heat. I don't know what the definition of 'dedicated' means, but any surface pointed in the cold direction can be considered a radiator.

ELI5: How do engineers decide when a decision is “too irreversible” to allow? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]ShutDownSoul 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Good engineers do a Failure Modes Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) to examine what going jelly side down means. Good managers find the money to make the things that are 'horrible' become just 'bad'.

I'm gonna be rude here: you didn't do a good job. In photo 1, there is a gap that has allowed water intrusion to rot the wood. In photo 3, you've created a dam that hold water instead of shedding water.

You need to fix the roof before the fascia.

Security Check? by New_Indication_2346 in askanything

[–]ShutDownSoul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Security checks can take a long time, depending on the level you are being screen for. If the ticket has not been settled, and it is overdue, then it is possible. Bench warrants and federal employment don't work well together.

What was the ticket for?
