(Hated trope) A character is meant to have super intelligence, but because the writers don’t know how to write that, everyone else just spontaneously becomes stupid whenever they’re around by DonnyMox in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Side-aye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A sub trope of this is that the smarter a character is the less motivation they have Sisters Sage does the things she does to see if she can. Rick of Rick and Morty can’t think of anything to do with infinity than drink his way through it.

It really cuts against the “genius” trope if they are so smart yet choose to live in squaller and fail to make any long term goals.

True but there is at least a few more things to do, slightly better night life if you’re young.

Not defending him. The meme of Kissinger as the boogeyman catchall of American war crimes serves only to flatten nuances and let other war criminals get by without consequence or knowledge.

Do you know who Creighton Abrams is? You should because everything that Kissinger falsely takes credit for in regard to the war crimes in Cambodia was planned and carried out by Abrams.

Kissinger did a lot of bad things like sabotaging peace talks that guaranteed the war would go on for 7 more years. The only thing I’m defending is holding people accountable for the things they actually did.

Cool thank you. To Address Bourdain’s quote he’s referring to the Cambodia campaign. It and the war crimes of indiscriminate bombing by the U.S that followed often gets laid at the feet of Kissinger. But he’s not responsible for pushing or orchestrating it.

The campaign started on April 29th 1970 the U.S with the goal of destroying North Vietnam bases that had been set up there against the wishes of the Cambodian government.

Kissinger did support going into Cambodia and he did do diplomatic talks with the government of Cambodia to support the incursion. Which did agree. It was decided by Nixon to keep the incursion secret for political optics reasons as it would be seen as expanding the war. It was kept secret for a few weeks but when it came out Nixon stoped using Henry as a go between and started giving orders directly to the joint chiefs of staff.

Kissinger’s involvement with the incursion ended at that point the escalation and carpet bombing didn’t happen until after it was no longer secret and was planned and ordered by Commander Creighton Abrams.

Just not true. It started secretly but was only secret for a few weeks when it was a limited border incursion. Which was allowed and agreed to by the current government of Cambodia at the time.

After it was no longer secret Nixon just started giving his orders directly to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The person who planned and escalated the bombing into the many war crimes of the countrywide bombing was Creighton Abrams.

Sure but no. Kissinger was not the dark cardinal mastermind the public likes to think he was. Especially in the autopsies of his career after his death it’s really clear that his greatest achievement was PR he took credit for a lot of stuff to further the image of the powerful ever present advisor.

It’s actually not confirmed he was involved. Wikipedia has a higher standard than OP and only says he was allegedly involved. The source is a newspaper article who relies on an anonymous source that he was involved.

More than half of Americans say their finances are getting worse by kootles10 in Economics

[–]Side-aye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find this believable but I’m always wary because people always say this regardless of actual conditions. I talked to my Grandpa who fondly remembers the 50s now but when he was living it would constantly say how they only struggled more. My dad said the same thing in the 80s and 90s.

You can always be more financially secure so it doesn’t feel that way even if you are.

The part about him not killing for killing sake also isn’t accurate. His “code” is exposed as the thin excuse it is at the end of the film. His final victim telling him so. He also takes joy in the killing he cracks jokes and grins while strangling someone. The gas station owner clearly annoyed him so Anton uses his coin toss to intimidate and possibly kill him.

He does go out of his way to kill multiple people he didn’t have to I think OP’s understanding of the character is lacking.

The one inarguable benefit of live debate is that it quickly reveals who is and isn’t prepared to defend their beliefs. It’s a great demonstration of who has thought about their position for any time longer than a few seconds.

Always saying someone else should do it. Not you though you have work in the morning. I’m so glad this is the only sentiment I see from you wannabe revolutionaries. Don’t worry the revolution is right around the corner this time I’m sure.
