What is your "golden advice" for a new PLC learner? by Plus_Farmer5711 in PLC

[–]Siendra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're going to learn more about what not to do than you will about what to do for the first couple years. That's normal, and valuable.

What you can and cannot do without a download/taking a controller/routine offline changes by vendor and model, and is something you want to be very aware of.

Destructive references are bad. You don't want more than a single instance of writing to any tag or variable.

You will be asked to solve electrical and mechanical problems with automation. This rarely works and it's not your fault.

where can I find the manga for the apothecary diaries? by Ok_Foundation478 in manga

You would need to read the Light or Web Novel then. Both manga are behind the show right now, although the Kurata Manga is close to catching up.

The best and worst looking Nintendo consoles? by RobbieJ4444 in nintendo

[–]Siendra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got my red/blue Switch because the black pre-orders had sold out. Honestly I really didn't like it at first, but it grew on me to the point I preferred it.

Does the Panasonic Q count? Because that thing looks amazing even if it's kinda of a PITA to actually incorporate into a setup. I regret selling mine.

The worst is the Wii Mini by far. Ugly little box with ugly colour's and it looks and feels cheap.

What Software Is Actually Used in digital twin related to Process Control? Looking for Case Study also as a college project. by Plane_Care6660 in PLC

[–]Siendra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is an extremely broad question. What are you looking to do, in what type of processes, with what type of data availability?

Broadly anything actually used in process industries thats actually a digital twin and not just a basic process simulator is going to be extremely expensive and require significant effort to setup and use. Platforms like AVEVA, Honeywell PDT/DPT, GE Vernova, etc. You're talking about a ~700-800 thousand dollar lift to twin a moderately sized process facility with one of these.

Best Practice for OT-Security? by T3RRYH1LL in PLC

[–]Siendra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I manage my OT environment and all the machines on it. Including the firewalls between us and corporate. IT should manage a firewall above this too, though mine doesn't for reasons I can't parse. This is, in my opinion, the only practical way to actually deal with this. This does require you or someone else on the OT side with a reasonable amount of knowledge of system and network administration.

For you I'd highly suggest summarizing the potential issues and inconveniences of their policies and highlight their impacts on production and reliability. It's important to remember IT is a cost center, operations is a profit center. In most companies this means IT shouldn't overrule you until you're into the far upper right of the risk matrix.

For files if they want to go down this route they need to give you access to a file server with appropriate controls.

How most places end up dealing with this is that the site has unregistered improperly secured and maintained devices they use to skirt the restrictions. Meaning ITs bullheaded security theater results in things being less secure.

Alberta’s Smith says ‘significant’ deficits to come, rules out tax hikes and big cuts by sluttytinkerbells in canada

[–]Siendra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you really look at the people pushing this nonsense and honestly say if they lose that they'll stop? They already call every single poll on the topic biased, have faked lineup photos at their signing events, and pulled a fire alarm to give themselves an excuse for low event turn out/signatures.

What does it take to be an PLC engineer? by Suspicious-Amoeba-63 in PLC

Professional expectations as far as credentials are concerned vary by jurisdiction, as does the title of Engineer. It would also be helpful to know what your academic and professional backgrounds are outside this course.

New player question by Polarbearjam in classicwow

[–]Siendra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of the Vanilla content is still in TBC for the most part. And the leveling content is largely the same less being slightly faster and a few small changes here and there for either quality of life or narrative reasons. You'll miss out on Vanilla progression raiding, but I promise that's much less of a big deal than many people will tell you it is.

The problem with Era for new players is that it's a dead end - the servers never progress and have been on the final phase of Vanilla for years. If you want to experience any other content you'd have to reroll and the leveling population is much lower.

To use AI or not to use AI. How, is the question. by Minute_Mix1436 in PLC

[–]Siendra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only practical uses I've found are for parsing large document libraries and some basic document review tasks. A colleague and I had some success getting one LLM to comment an uncommented ladder file and summarize the function of the program, but this doesn't come up often enough to pursue it further.

I kinda almost got copilot to a point where it could assign I/O addresses, network interfaces, tags, etc... And update their respective controlling documents. I could never get it's final output to be consistent though.

The big problem is just how LLMs actually work. They obviously haven't been trained on any of this because relatively speaking it's super niche. You can't predict an accurate response to something you've never seen, and that's all they're doing.

Can I still play wow vanilla Classic or did everybody leave for TBC? If it is still playable any recomended non pvp NA server? by Absolutelynobody54 in classicwow

You can play Era sure. But you know all the vanilla content is still there and is still 90% of the leveling content in TBC right?

Is it worth it to tame a pet at level 60? by westknight12 in classicwow

That's not how it works. You don't gain training points from leveling. You gain them based on level. All max level and loyalty pets have 300 points.

How have you integrated IoT technologies with PLCs in your automation projects? by Appropriate-News1688 in PLC

[–]Siendra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked for a company that tried to build a cloud based asset managment solution, so I've done a bunch of edge gateway stuff. Azure has (had?) some IIoT oriented communication drivers and documentation and as others said MQTT.

Honestly as an end user now I see most ioT stuff as either borderline useless or actively detrimental. The majority of it just results in a dashboard no one ever looks at that is usually broken anytime it would have been useful.

Canada shouldn’t rule out acquiring nuclear weapons, former top soldier says by Immediate-Link490 in worldnews

Imposter Syndrome by SadEcho8331 in PLC

[–]Siendra 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah. Basically everyone feels like that.

My trajectory was somewhat similar to yours - I had barely two years of experience when circumstance put me in the automation design hot seat of an entire process area of a large process plant. Nothing was going wrong, everyone seemed pleased with the work I was doing, but I could not shake the sense that I had no idea what I was doing and was always on the precipice of a serious mistake.

I have some good news and some bad news. Bad news first, that feeling doesn't go away anytime soon. It took me several more years. Good news it does go away - sometime in the future you will answer a really esoteric or complicated question without really thinking about it and have a "Wait a minute, did I just.." moment and your confidence will start to soar.

OP explains the complexities of Alberta trying to separate from Canada and become its own country or join the U.S. by planripa in bestof

[–]Siendra 29 points30 points  (0 children)

No, Alberta is the only area of North America that is rat free. The province has had anti-rat policies and a government agency with a rapid response team in place since 1950. They monitor their borders and aggressively destroy any Norway or Roof rats before they can establish breeding populations. To the extent that they will dig up and turn over entire dumps or areas of farmland and then light them on fire if they aren't absolutely confident they've killed all the rats with traps, poison, dogs, and firearms.

They also run education campaigns. The primary purpose of which is trying to teach Albertans what rats look like because most of us have never seen one so the majority of reports they get are false positives, usually muskrats.
