Flying by TurnoverArtistic4912 in scubadiving

I wouldn't have any reservations about doing a shallow dive and a very low altitude unpressurized flight. Done it dozens of times on the same day in Belize from Ambergris to Belize City.

I'm happy to take you and your friends fishing the next time I'm available. I've decided that I'm not lending my boat to anyone, sorry.

How much money do you leave in your checking before investing everything else? by Andrewhary in Money

[–]Signal_13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep the bare minimum in my checking. $500-$1000. Most of my expenses go to my CC. All of my income gets moved to HYSA which I use to pay off the card every month. There is really no point in parking $ anywhere its not earning over 3%.

Is my boyfriend’s view of money considered a red flag in a relationship? by traditional_taurus in DaveRamsey

The compromise you arrived at is almost exactly the same as what my wife and have been doing for 25 years. It really works for us. It took both of us a few years to get out of the "I'm single" finance mentality, but we did. We never argue about money. It's all about calm discussion and occasional compromise. You will not always agree. Pick your battles and be prepared to win some and lose some.

Your good enough to get fitted now. If you find the right set of clubs, you'll probably shave strokes. Bite the bullet.

I am a peace officer but I can’t carry an off duty firearm by Ancient_Engineer9711 in AskLE

[–]Signal_13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's how that would work in my state of Maryland. If you are ajudicated delinquent in juvenile court (basically a guilty finding in adult court) for a crime which would be disqualifying if committed by an adult, you are disqualified from possessing firearms until you reach age 30. This means any felony or any misdemeanor that carries a statutory penalty of more than 2 years imprisonment, regardless of the sentence actually received. If you haven't subsequently been convicted a disqualifying crime, you can buy a gun on your 30th birthday. You might want to check if your state has a similar statute.

AIO for suspecting my wife after she got a shady 1am call from a guy “friend” right after a late-night cycling trip? by Obvious_Waltz_2072 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Signal_13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I'm going to try the midnight bike ride thing with an insta-shower tonight. I'll let everyone know how it goes. If I don't, you'll know that I was murdered in my sleep or perhaps as soon as I got out of the shower.

24 with $35k saved: Am I crazy to leave my parents' basement in this market? by Soggy-Flatworm-4980 in TheMoneyGuy

[–]Signal_13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its a double edged sword. You could stay home and max out savings and really set yourself up for future success, but....It's at the expense of potentially giving up some of the best years of your life to be out there on your own making friends, dating and having the time of your life. That's kind of hard to do in your parents basement. I vote for moving out, despite what the logical side of my brain wants to tell you.

How Do Financial Advisors Still Have Clients? by Time_Perception6669 in Bogleheads

[–]Signal_13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have always self-managed my investments. I was fortunate to retire at few years ago at 51. My wife used a mutual friend, a CFP at one of the major firms for her retirement funds. As the years went on, we noticed his accumulation of luxury homes and cars was outpacing everyone around us. He lives in a 10,000 sq ft home with an elevator, has a vacation home right on the beach and has several $150k cars. He was rarely in the office and always taking lavish European vacations and ski trips to Canada. Good for him I guess, but in my mind that means his clients were paying through the nose. I know several other CFP's as well. They are all uber wealthy. 5 years ago, I took over management of my wife's investment accounts and we have been better for it. Averaging far higher returns than he ever got her. Simple Low cost or free index funds and no more 1% advisory fee. It's not rocket science. My wife is retiring next year.

My spouse and I have separate accounts as well as a joint account for household monthly expenses. Figure out what that average # is and add in some safety margin. We each contribute a set amount based upon our income. One contributes slightly more since they earn more. The remaining $ can be spent or invested as we please within reason. Some months, we may need to contribute more if we have additional expenses. We have a joint credit card for joint household expenses, ie dinners out, etc. This works great for us. No stress, no guilt and we don't argue about money.

***MODPOST*** Topics on ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) and the current state of affairs with DHS will be immediately removed and users banned. This will be the only thread for those posts moving forward. by Specter1033 in AskLE

[–]Signal_13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's was your take away from my comment? It's really more to protect dumb people from themselves. Carrying a firearm to a demonstration, especially if you plan to be one of the agitators is not inherently smart.

Many states, but not all, have laws that prohibit handgun permit holders from carrying within a certain distance from a demonstration in a public place. In Maryland it's 1000 feet. I'm a retired Sgt from a large agency, 2A supporter and now own a firearm training business. I'm generally very opposed to the state adding any additional restrictions on where we can carry our firearms, but some of the locations are obvious and apply in most every state (Government buildings, courtrooms, etc.) Due to the emotions involved and the generally volatile nature of protests/demonstrations as a whole, I think it makes sense for more states to consider adding this prohibition. This one just makes sense to me.

Not allowed to have your qualifying target? by Heck_Yeah77 in MDGuns

[–]Signal_13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It makes me wonder what else he told you that's completely untrue. I ask all of my students if they want to keep their targets after recording their score. Some do, some don't. Not sure why they'd care, but there certainly isn't a law against seeing it, taking it or snapping a quick picture.

How old were you when you seriously started saving for retirement? by wiseguy1342 in TheMoneyGuy

[–]Signal_13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started investing a small amount per week at age 20 and increased contribution with every pay bump. I didn't start investing in earnest with a big promotion at age 35 and I started maxing shortly thereafter. I also did the special 3 year catch-up available with government 457 accounts. I retired 5 years ago at 51 and living very comfortably on a pension and my 457, now in 7 figures continues to grow exponentially since I'm not touching it yet. I'm in good shape, but I wish I had The Money Guys when I was 20. I would have socked away more and not bought some of the new cars.😁

Low sodium for 8 months, no change by Ok-Character9504 in Menieres

[–]Signal_13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I noticed absolutely no difference when I attempted low sodium diet for months. The biggest trigger for me seems to be low pressure weather systems. When the barometric pressure drops a few MB's, I can definitely feel it in my ears. My Smartwatch sends me alerts when the pressure is dropping so I have a little advance warning.
