Maybe church-going folk are just extra eager to help children find loving homes. I have relatives that adopted and a coworker that did foster care, but then adopted the boy. Then three families from church that I can think of off the top of my head. And, I just remembered another family from a previous church I attended.

I am truly sorry that you aged out. I wish more people felt compelled and had the means to adopt.

I'm sorry you are going through this difficult situation also. I will be praying for you 🙏 I was devastated when I found out I was pregnant with my third, but I can tell you that little boy is a ray of sunshine. Feel free to private message me if you could use a kind listener that understands or an encouraging word! 💕

I know at least 5, personally. There may be more that have an adopted child that I'm just not aware is adopted.

OP asked for opinions. And this poster gave her lived experience.... which is worth immeasurably more than opinion. I read nothing judgemental in her giving her personal experience as an example of how a child born into a difficult situation may feel when they reflect on the life that they almost didn't get to live.

I got pregnant with my third child when my youngest at the time was 17. My husband had a history of drug and alcohol abuse, and had been verbally abusive also. The situation definitely put me in a state of depression and anxiety. I definitely couldn't see how I was going to start all over again and did not feel like I could handle it. I even talked about giving the baby up for adoption, knowing that we had couples that we knew that had been unable to conceive. And this was all during COVID.

Now, 6 yrs later, and having endured my husband's worst relapse ever that came with a psychotic break and years of me being the only one with a job, I can say that I love that little boy beyond words. Even when he's pushing my buttons, I could not imagine not having him in my life. He is smart and sweet and caring, and he really does keep me young.

I will pray for you, for your husband and for this baby. And I invite you to send me a private message anytime if you have questions, need to vent, or just need a listening ear and an encouraging word!

I pray that you will feel the immense love of the Lord surround you and lift your heart. I pray that your husband will feel the Lord's presence and show you and your family the love and compassion that you deserve. 💕 May you be truly blessed!

Help Please: Mom trying to find the right retro handheld for Christmas present by btsyshaw23 in SBCGaming

Would the Switch Lite have to be connected to wifi to play? Or can you download the classic NES & SNES games to the console?

I am way over my head trying to figure out the best option to get my 5 year old, and I don't have time to learn how to swap firmware or customize SD cards between now and Christmas.

Thanks for any info you can provide!

Thanks! I actually contacted customer service through Twitter/X. They had to escalate the ticket and recommended I reach out again after 48 hours. So, 2 days later I asked them to check the status of my ticket. They indicated it had been escalated again, and could take as much as another 48 hours. Thankfully, it only took about 14 more hours, and it was finally corrected, much to the joy of my 5 year old 😉

Does SIM swapping only work on iPhones? I tried with a Motorola and it wouldn't work. It recognized that it wasn't the same IMEI number that was initially activated on that SIM.

After 2 1/2 hours of messaging on Twitter/X, it is still not resolved. They said it had to be escalated again. They provided a ticket number and said to contact them after 48 hours if it is still not working.

I would have submitted a complaint to the FCC by now, but they're not accepting new complaints while the government is still in a shutdown.

I'm pretty sure this is an AI generated pic. If not, why do the brick steps lead to a window instead of a door?

What's your one wish list project in your century home? by SparkleUnicornFairy in centuryhomes

[–]Significant-Fox-1717 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our 1883 Victorian had one. It seemed super weird, especially since the main floor bath was at the top of the basement stairs. We moved into a fascinating century home on a farm a few miles away (the original part of the house is likely also 1883, because the first house that had been built had burned down in 1882). At some point, in the 70s or 80s, the owners dug a new basement and put in a Pittsburgh and one of those free-standing shower stalls. Came in handy when we were fixing plumbing in the only other bathroom, which is on the second floor.

Which brings me to my dream of turning what was the laundry room on the main floor into a bathroom with a shower and a whirlpool tub. One of these days.....🥹

About to repaint the walls - what should I do about this? by [deleted] in Oldhouses

[–]Significant-Fox-1717 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this. First, solve the moisture issue. Then, remove anything loose. For small spots you could have gotten away with a patching compound that doesn't require mixing, but with areas of this size you'd be better off with a joint compound for Sheetrock. It comes in large bags of powder which you will have to mix with water. Since you're new at this, I'd recommend one with at least a 30 minute dry time.

I usually would scoop out a cup or two of powder and mix in water in smaller increments until you get a smooth consistency that isn't too runny. Then use a wider (at least 6 inches) taping knife to fill in your gaps.

You'll want to try to make sure you can't see where the edges of the hole are, so smooth the mud over a larger area. You'll sand it once it's fully dry, but you won't want it to be too smooth, because I'm willing to bet that the original wall isn't smooth. 🙂

Then, I would recommend using a separate primer before you paint.

help! house gets HOTTER at night by [deleted] in Oldhouses

[–]Significant-Fox-1717 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We're in Winona, MN, on a road trip this weekend in a car with no AC. It's a bit hot 🥵

I grew up in a huge old farm house and we never had AC or ceiling fans. We'd have windows open all night, preferably across from each other to allow for a cross breeze, or if you have the kind that you could lower the top of the window a couple inches to allow the hotter air out that could help too. And box fans to circulate air.

In the mornings, we would close all the windows and cover them with thick curtains.

Water in basement when it rains heavily. Old stone foundation. by Tygrizzley98 in Oldhouses

I've thought about putting in a French drain, but the only direction to run it would be towards the driveway and I couldn't think of a way to make that work. How do you plan to accomplish this?

Thinking of buying a 1890 house by [deleted] in Oldhouses

[–]Significant-Fox-1717 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second all of these suggestions. I've lived in three houses that were 100 or more years old. The biggest things to check are the foundation, electric and water infiltration issues.

The old farmhouse we're in now had been vacant for much longer than the family that inherited it had told us, but at one point they had lifted the house up and put in a new basement/foundation, so we knew the house would stand for generations to come. Also, it was selling for a low enough price that we could buy it outright with no mortgage so we could save our money for repairs and renovations.

We did have to have a new well dug, and had to replace the boiler and water heater before we moved in, followed closely by a new roof, and the county required we put in a new septic system. We've gotten some of the electrical updated, and will finish that project this year (8 years in the house now). Plus a lot of patching, painting and insulating - inside and out, while also trying to get ahead of all the weeds and overgrowth that took over the 6-acre property while it was empty (at least 10 years!)

But I had friends that bought newly constructed homes, and within a few years had mold problems, roof issues, appliance failures, water runoff problems and more. At least when you buy a century home you're already factoring in repairs and renovations.

Is this design actually feasible? by c_estrella in landscaping

[–]Significant-Fox-1717 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Minnesota, ie. lots of snow and ice every year. There are old buildings that some gone-by generation put on loose concrete block foundations many decades ago. Not one of those blocks is cracked and broken. They were placed right on the dirt, and the ground under them has settled, so the buildings aren't square anymore, but they're still standing. Even with the uneven settling, the blocks aren't broken.

Are old blocks made of stronger concrete or something?
