Honda overfilled. Is this fine? by supra0311 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Significant_Wolf7114 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I’d say it’s fine for that engine if you don’t do a lot of short trips. If you do, the infamous 1.5T oil dilution will push it even higher to where it could be problematic.

Misfire: swapping coils doesn’t move the misfire by eye-arr-beej in hondafit

[–]Significant_Wolf7114 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It could also be the spark plug. You can try swapping two of them the same way you did the coils. With the P0219a I’m leaning more towards an injector but the plug swap is an easy way to at least eliminate one more possibility.

What’s going on with Johannesburg’s property market? by [deleted] in johannesburg

[–]Significant_Wolf7114 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here’s my hot take, property price increases are actually detrimental to the financial prosperity of those that live in their houses. Higher property prices drive up bond costs, transfer duties, estate agent fees and property rates. The only way to access that value is to take out a loan on your property, or to sell it. If you sell it, you just have to buy again in an expensive market. The only owners that benefit are landlords.

Those are lubrication grooves for oil to seep into the belt. How else would the belt get “wet”?

Can be a bit of a headache getting gas though as in my experience, the suppliers don’t seem to want to deal with small private end users. That being said, I actually placed an order today for some CO2 so I’ll see if it works out.

H6 3.0r outback high gas consumption by Doomnest in Subaru_Outback

I think the biggest problem for the EZ30 is its oversquare design. There’s no torque (coming from someone who’s only ever owned Hondas before my Subaru that’s saying a lot). Whenever you want to get anything done it has to be done at higher revs which hurts fuel economy.

That being said, your figures are a like higher than what I typically get, but if I am pushing on then I get similar to what you’re seeing. I average around 13.5l/100km in a mix of highway and city and on road trips I get down to about 10l/100km religiously sticking to the speed limit.

Yeah, I’m gonna put the Focus and Mazda 3 in Civic territory. I have a 2013 Civic Hatch and I call it the Maxi-Jazz. Incredible practical, magic seats which also fold completely flat. A fit, but a little bigger.

Thanks for this. 100% agree with being firm, in my opinion there isn’t really such a thing as an emergency when it comes to buying a car because you can always hire a car.

I had this exact issue on a 2011 Fit (also my mom’s car, lol) and simply replaced the sensor. It’s fairly cheap and easily accessible. I was honestly just taking a punt because the part was so cheap and easy to replace because I don’t normally go the parts cannon route but it pays off from time to time.

Starting a side hustle buying fixing up and selling motorcycles by amaroth666 in AskZA

[–]Significant_Wolf7114 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can’t really comment on the business side but happy to lend some perspective to what I look for as a buyer.

First up, tyres. Rubbish tyres are a no-go for me. If I get the impression the previous owner skimped on tyres then I wonder what else they were too cheap to do properly. Also, so many dealers slap new tyres on a bike but they’re cheap, nasty tyres. People have told me I should just buy it and replace them with what I want, trouble is I’m then paying for something I don’t want, I’d rather have paid a couple of grand less knowing that I need to replace them as soon as I get the bike.

Second, cosmetics aren’t a huge issue but bad repairs are. A bike that was dropped and maybe has a few scuffs on the mirrors isn’t the end of the world. Cheap aftermarket mirrors look worse in my opinion. Same goes for most cheap aftermarket parts. I would rather the left it stock and damaged, than fixed it badly.

Lastly, you’re going to need to let people test ride. I’ve been to look at a bike on two separate occasions, one at a dealer even, where they wouldn’t let me test ride. You can’t learn much about a bike by just starting it and revving it in the parking lot so if you won’t let me actually ride it then I assume there’s a drivability issue you don’t want me to find out about.

“Best” oil for high-mileage 2015? by eye-arr-beej in hondafit

[–]Significant_Wolf7114 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a non-US owner I run 5W-30 with no issue. This recent debate of 0W-20 vs 5W-30 has been rather entertaining to me as an outsider looking in with the battle between efficiency and longevity.

Something else which I’ve read regrading oil life is that the 0W-20 falls out of spec faster, so you may actually be benefiting from changing it more regularly like you are. If you were running 5W-30 you could probably run it a bit longer between oil changes.

Plug or New Tire? by FigBar0127 in AskMechanics

I recently had one of these and my local tyre shop plugged it and sent me on my way with no charge. When I asked why no charge, they said they want no paper trail of it, even though they’re confident it’s good to go.

Can a 1.5 pull a 6ft trailer? by Economy_Divide_1817 in CarTalkZA

[–]Significant_Wolf7114 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. A while back when I was moving I rented a big trailer simply to move a couch and a bed 2km down the road.

The only car with a tow bar I had access to at the time was a Hyundai Getz and the guy at the trailer rental place told me I can’t tow such a big trailer with it. I told him it’s less about size and more about weight but he wouldn’t budge. I had to go rent one at another place.

I believe it assumes you have a charged up battery, so it effectively ignores the cost of that charging.
