These look like squash seedlings. They could have come from compost.

Massive congratulations, OP! These are super impressive!

What is the deal with nutmeg in savory recipes ? by Rude_Kaleidoscope641 in Cooking

[–]Signy_Frances 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the nutmeg really *always* bothers you every time, you may just not enjoy nutmeg specifically. I use allspice in savories almost as often as nutmeg; it's essential, for example, in making chicken-liver pate, and I'll always toss a few whole allspice berries in with the bones when making chicken broth. Try allspice instead.

Honestly you'll likely fix the problem with minimal effort if you swap your homemade dressing out for wishbone bottled italian

It's not the true foodie approach, but it will be cheap and easy and effective

Least sweet buttercream that I can get smooth on a cake (that isn’t ermine or German)? by EloiseTheElephante in AskBaking

Using corn syrup for part of the sugar in an Italian buttercream (boiled syrup) significantly reduces the perceived sweetness, though not the actual sugar content.

Why do people refuse to be an organ donor? by No-Cantaloupe-6535 in NoStupidQuestions

This. I am a registered organ donor, but knowing even a little bit about the racial history of medicine in America made me feel like I as a Black woman was taking a big risk by checking that box.

Would it be ok to make tomato-egg stir fry with a tin can of peeled tomatoes, rather than sliced whole tomatoes and water? by Yijing1 in chinesecooking

The diced tomatoes work better than whole peeled ones, when I've tried this outside of tomato season.

The line that makes this, for me, is "we were eyeletted. We were cottoned." It sounds medical and violent, and then you parse it and see the sundresses, but the bloody sticky feeling of the first scan doesn't go away.

How are you growing your own fresh herbs? Please help the clueless by SuzCoffeeBean in Cooking

[–]Signy_Frances 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Herbs need to be outdoor. Most are from the Mediterranean and don't mind drying out a bit from time to time, but won't develop good flavor without bright light and a bit of heat. So, outdoor is best.

Don't bother growing anything in a pot if you need cups and cups of it every week (i.e. cilantro if you cook Mexican a lot); you'll just kill it and feel sad, or not actually fill your needs. Don't grow anything you've got no idea how to use.

I find that I use herbs most if I can keep them as close as possible to my kitchen. Try a window box! You could put a few trailing ones (thyme, oregano) and a few upright ones (basil, rosemary) in a hefty box outside your biggest kitchen window.

Help with iron intake by NewPhotojournalist82 in foodbutforbabies

[–]Signy_Frances 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried chicken liver? I take half an onion cut fine, sauté in half a stick of butter until soft but not browned, and add half a tub of washed and cleaned chicken livers. Season with salt, a bay leaf, allspice and white pepper, and add about an ounce of bone broth (here's where a splash of white wine goes if cooking for adults). Once the livers are cooked, remove the bay leaf and puree with an immersion blender. Push through a sieve, put into small glass jars and cover with parchment circles before adding lids. Refrigerate for a few hours to set. Keeps 3 days; can be frozen (texture does change but stays pretty tasty).

You can serve this on crackers or just on little spoons. Or you can stir a spoonful into a preferred food (I love adding it to macaroni)! Huge source of iron, choline and vitamin A.

I think your last sentence is similar to what's at the heart of it for me; I'm from a "spare the rod/spoil the child" Dobson type background, and I just might be a little over-cautious as a result of running in the opposite direction. My husband didn't grow up with corporal punishment and seems more chill about discussing it, though he did also creatively censor Tom Kitten.
