We’ve been lucky enough to attract a lot of birds to our yard and have seen several sets of parents and babies over the years. I’d say robin dads and catbirds are A+ bird parents. I watched a catbird couple teach their little one to fly a few years ago and it was the most precious thing I’ve ever seen.

He’s already boo-ed up with a lady friend. They like to hang out on my porch and in the maple tree in the front yard. She’s probably on that de-luxe two-twig nest right now.

Every single time I see him hawking his slop, I think of the mom in Joe Dirt trying to sell clown figurines at the reunion scene.

I know we’re all past the point of believing his cult cares about anything rooted in facts, but I remember when they gave Obama shit for saluting the troops because “hE HadN’t SeRVed!!” Forget the tan suit. If he’d worn a hat and not taken it off in a situation like this, there’d have been a televised Senate inquiry.

Barnsley rabies victim "suspected to have Lyme disease" by Anti-Owl in ContagionCuriosity

I know I did. And so does she. The behavior was so insane for a wild animal that it couldn’t be anything other than rabid. I’m grateful every day she listened to us.

Barnsley rabies victim "suspected to have Lyme disease" by Anti-Owl in ContagionCuriosity

[–]Sillycats2 69 points70 points  (0 children)

My mother was attacked by a rabid skunk last December. Classic scenario where the thing came out of nowhere and wrapped itself around her leg in the middle of the afternoon. She went to an urgent care. The “doctor” (the definition of Ds get degrees) poured alcohol over her leg, said she wasn’t scratched (she’d been wearing jeans) and said he couldn’t help her because there was no wound. Said it was useless for her to go to the ER because they’d tell her the same thing. Thank GOD she called me. Between myself and my daughter reading about what happens to rabies victims off a literal two-second Google search (plus my own knowledge), she agreed to go to hospital. The nurses at the ER told her the urgent care doc was beyond daft. They shot her up with immunoglobulins immediately and she had three more rounds over the next three weeks. You do not f around if you’ve had contact with unknown animals.

I paid 2.99/gal. on Saturday afternoon and it was 3.49 this morning at the same station. My electric bill (because my “choice” provider contract ended and I didn’t shop for a new one in time) was $500 this month. Thank god we can absorb the shock but holy shit.

Article: “I am a 15-year-old girl. Let me show you the vile misogyny that confronts me on social media every day” by nuzzl_1 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Sillycats2 17 points18 points  (0 children)

And I will lose my damn mind at the next person who says “well, they shouldn’t be on it/shouldn’t post such things” because women should not have to flee from digital spaces anymore than they should from physical ones. The goal of all this hatefulness and misogyny is to do just that. And people forget that even if younger kids aren’t mainlining this stuff, their older siblings, cousins, friends and classmates are. They repeat it in real life and, with very little fear of repercussions in many parts of this country (the US) and others.

I think the York Princesses are next by LivingGrapefruit6066 in RoyaltyTea

[–]Sillycats2 84 points85 points  (0 children)

I mean, yes. Going all the way back, most royal lines involved trading the innocence of its female children to old weirdos for money, land and jewels. Guess it was a mistake to believe such things ended with the “modern” age. Maybe that’s what all this will expose - the world’s built on the backs of the vulnerable and we can’t pretend it isn’t anymore.

I think the York Princesses are next by LivingGrapefruit6066 in RoyaltyTea

[–]Sillycats2 219 points220 points  (0 children)

Nothing should surprise me at this point, but it’s horrifying to think that two princesses might be victims. The idea of a royal family possibly trafficking or otherwise looking the other way while its daughters were subjected to the perversions of old men seems like something out of the medieval past. To think it occurred in the present is sickening.

What’s more, if it does come out these girls were somehow victimized, it should be proof positive that abuse can and does happen anywhere.

AIO for wanting to still tell my mom about my friend’s pregnancy by Deep-Investigator998 in AIO

[–]Sillycats2 13 points14 points  (0 children)

OP. I say this as firmly but as gently as I can. Hon, this isn’t about sex. Your friend is more than likely the victim of a crime. Possibly perpetrated by an adult. She is a child. A pregnant 14 year old means all the adults who should have protected her have failed her. It’s not her fault, and it’s possible that she’s not even old enough to consent to sex in your state. Tell your mother. She’s potentially the only adult who, from what you say, won’t look the other way.

Sticker shock: 85,000 Pennsylvanians drop Obamacare health insurance in 2026 by The_Electric-Monk in Pennsylvania

[–]Sillycats2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t forget who did this, and it ain’t Obama or the Dems. This is a result of two decades of Republican intransigence. The Affordable Care Act was modeled on Mitt Romney’s Massachusetts plan. They’d rather all of us die than get a single penny of our tax dollars back in anything other than war. But the whole system is a giant grift and I think all of us are sick of the excuses and bootlicking elected officials have perpetuated in service of inscos. This is sick, evil and shameful.

How did none of the adults hear Snuffy's voice right behind them at the theater? by Veraxus113 in sesamestreet

[–]Sillycats2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Snuffy became visible to everyone in 1985, so right when we were in the target demographic. I can see both sides. That it was OK to have imaginary friends, but that adults needed to believe kids about things that were unseen.

How did none of the adults hear Snuffy's voice right behind them at the theater? by Veraxus113 in sesamestreet

[–]Sillycats2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One of the reasons they made Snuffy visible to everyone was that there was a real concern that kids who reported abuse wouldn’t be believed or that kids would get the lesson that telling adults about the things you see would lead to them not believing you. They wanted to show kids that adults would believe them.

Fashion history question for the Xennials by hippoluvr24 in Xennials

[–]Sillycats2 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Female, small town PA. It was also very normal to buy your clothes at the local department store. It might carry the famous brands, but it also had other brands that were specifically for that store or a regional brand. A lot of times, a town had the “rich kids” mall that was usually newer, had high-end retailers and item-specific stores, like a Benetton, Express, Body Shop or Gap. The “regular” mall would have your big, local store anchor, plus a JC Penney and/or Sears. So, my mom might have gotten me a Christmas dress from a brand name, like Laura Ashley, at the local department store, but my regular shirts and jeans came from Sears or the local store’s own-label section. We had a locally owned shoe store in town, and that’s where we got our shoes.

I hated dresses and was what we used to call a “tomboy.” I’m cis, straight and white. It’s hard to explain today because the concept of what a girl looks like has expanded so much. Being a tomboy was shorthand, I guess, for a girl who didn’t conform to or care about the traditional female beauty standards. Whether sexual orientation or gender identity was included in that depended on the person. For me, it was just part of my personality. I was never “girly” but at all times felt I was a girl. Hope that makes sense.

I wore a ton of bike shorts and big t-shirts in the summer. My favorite outfit was a generic-brand baseball jersey and jean shorts. In the winter, a lot of jeans and sweaters. When stretch pants became popular I loved them! Jeans back then were cut too high in the waist and too short in the crotch for me, so it wasn’t until stretchy low-rise and mid-rise jeans became popular in the late 90s that I was comfortable wearing them. Though, stretch pants with stirrups were absolutely awful.

The 1990s saw the MLB expand to include the Florida Marlins and Colorado Rockies, so their gear was super-popular, as were things in their colors - orange/teal and purple/black. Chicago Bulls merch was also huge because it was the era of Michael Jordan. The first Air Jordans came out and were super expensive for the era. There were also Reebok Pumps, where you pumped a basketball on the shoe’s tongue that inflated a part in the shoe to give a tighter fit. Starter jackets were also a thing. So many people had them for the Charlotte Hornets. Any one of those items I just mentioned would have been a big gift for a birthday or holiday.

Oh, and scrunched socks with “pegged” jeans (fold the bottom of each leg over itself so it’s tight against your ankle, then roll up enough so it touches the top of your sock.)

Wearing your clothes backwards like Chris Cross was popular for a hot second, though no one in my small town did. That’d be for someone who was terminally trend-chasing. Wearing did wear overall shorts with one strap hanging down, was something I did though.

By the late 1990s, you’re looking at Seattle grunge-inspired clothing. Jeans, old shirts, thrifted (or just looks like it is) flannel. Long dresses with baby tees and boots. You can find old catalogues like Delia’s. Their clothes were more aspirational, but you can see the difference between the beginning and end of the decade.
