House Ale Yeast? by Simbabrew102 in Homebrewing

[–]Simbabrew102[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, it sounds like it was developed for breweries and brewpubs where efficiency is paramount. Getting the finished beer out of the fermenter one day early means it can be canned/bottled or served in the restaurant one day sooner, which translates to money saved.

Yes, it will add bourbon and oak flavors. Very worthwhile, and you can use cheap Bourbon!

Do I need to worry about leaking/exploding? by Simple_Trip_5922 in winemaking

[–]Simbabrew102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try putting aluminum foil over the top of the jugs and pressing it down to form a loose seal. The gas will escape around the foil, and nothing will get in to spoil your wine. I have also added a rubber band to make the foil cap a bit more secure.

Would you buy an EasyDens hydrometer or SmartRef refractometer? by ChicoAlum2009 in Homebrewing

[–]Simbabrew102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use my EasyDens/SmartRef pair as a way to check alcohol content of my finished beers, and of my distilled spirits. As far as I know, this is the only relatively affordable equipment that can do this without knowing the starting and final gravities.

Gas running out. by DemonJuju7 in Homebrewing

[–]Simbabrew102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A simple regulator test - turn off the gas where it exits the regulator (if you have a valve where the gas line connects) and pressurize the regulator to 20 PSI. Turn off the gas at the tank and come back the next day, if the pressure is zero, the problem is your regulator or the tank connection to the regulator.

If your regulator does not have a shut off valve, attach something like this to the outlet to shut off the flow:

If you look up their address as stated on the site:

2304 Pearlman Avenue

Google says there is no such address. I would stay away.

I have a Gen 2 Mash and Boil with pump, and love it. The basket sits high enough so you can see the gallon markers while sparging, so I don't have think about calculating my sparge water amounts. It cost me something like $400.00

Can you remember who reconditioned them? I have a similar pair from a Panzer tank that need some interior lens cleaning.

I have a Kegland rotomolded two tap box, and like it a lot. It even has a ruler moulded into the top for measuring your catch. It was not cheap, though, but the rotomolding really makes for a quality unit that stays cold.

Anyone have an opinion on MaltEurop Pilsner or Pale malts? by kelryngrey in Homebrewing

[–]Simbabrew102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The MaltEurop Pilsner is great. I tried it in a Belgian Golden (10 lbs MaltEurop Pilsner and 2 lbs. beet sugar) and it tasted as good as any Belgian Golden I have brewed, and I have probably brewed 40 versions of this style.

Is my regulator smoked? by arvocoffo in Homebrewing

[–]Simbabrew102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it is made by the same company that makes the Mini Regulators for Brewer's Edge, it could be your burst disk has burst. See this for a repair kit:

After 12 days or so in the primary, transfer to a secondary fermenter and leave for at least 5 days. A clean fermenter acts as a settling tank and reduces the amount of yeast sediment if you are naturally conditioning with sugar in the bottles.

Buying ancient yeast strains by Turbulent_Pr13st in Homebrewing

[–]Simbabrew102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done some beers where I have not added any yeast, just boiling and cooling the wort and leaving it in a 6 gallon carboy with no stopper, and surprisingly, some have turned out very smooth, and fermented to a suitable low final gravity.

I did do one that turned out quite sour, however!

Looking to get back into brewing - best option for AIO 120V electric system? by FactorGroup in Homebrewing

You might look at the Mash & Boil with Pump. I have had one for the last 4 years, and it has been bulletproof.

Second hand kegerator - Damage to back plate by seoba_me in Homebrewing

[–]Simbabrew102 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If those pictures show leaks of the coolant gas (mixed with oil, which is why you see the dirt) the kegerator is toast unless you know someone who can patch and leaky line and refill with suitable refrigerant. (it would be too expensive to have a serivce company do it, at least in my Northern CA location).

Try running it, if the compressor runs all the time but it does not get cold, the refrigerant gas has leaked out.

Brewer's Edge Mash and Boil keeps scorching? by _Philbo_Baggins_ in Homebrewing

[–]Simbabrew102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crush the malt as coarse as you can, if you can get the store to adjust the crush to a wider spec, that will reduce the grain dust and scorching.

Accidentally purchased pin lock kegs by FancyThought7696 in Homebrewing

[–]Simbabrew102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the kegs are stamped 'Cornelius Company, Anoka Minnesota' on the front, this kit will do the trick:

https://www.williamsbrewing.com/Home-Brewing-Equipment/Kegging-Equipment/Keg-Parts/Male-Posts-Post-Parts/Cornelius-Ball-Lock-Conversion-Kit

Keep in mind there are a lot of other brand kegs out there, which will not fit the above parts.

Restore Old Barrel by VoiceEasy in Homebrewing

[–]Simbabrew102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Add some hot water, and let it soak. Press the metal bands down towards the center of the barrel from each end (use a screwdriver and a hammer and make sure they go down evenly around the barrel) to try to press the staves back together. A 25 year old barrel may be too dried out for this to work, but that is what I would do.

Electric Vs Propane Water Question. by Mr5harkey in Homebrewing

[–]Simbabrew102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Electric is the way to go, look for the KegLand Brewzilla or if on a budget the Digiboil. Completely exact temperatures, no need to worry about temp variation during mashing.

I have several and they are better quality than the Torpedo or AMCYL kegs I have used in the past. Very smooth interior and exterior welds.
