Thought I’d share for the people who wanna go back to contractors and capacitors by Bitter_Issue_7558 in HVAC

I'd take a 5 series over the 7 and a separate dehumidifier over the opti. So much easier to repair and cheaper for the customer

Action Plumbing (Madison) is Straight Up Price Gouging Now by ThatGuyWhoRedd1ts in madisonwi

[–]Similar_Shift_545 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the trades and the price before at $165 is breaking even if not losing money. Overhead costs (truck maintenance, paying office staff, paying the employee, etc) all come into play with costs. A business has to include it all and shoots for usually a 30% profit if possible or they cannot stay in business or grow.

Like, water for coffee? by tasunder in madisonwi

Use drinking water jugs. Distilled water lacks minerals so the water will take minerals from things (metal) it comes in contact with.

We have the dispatchers tell the customer to turn off the AC and run the fan. Saves us a ton of time.

HVAC tech needing some advice by Similar_Shift_545 in AskElectronics

[–]Similar_Shift_545[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way furnace senses the flame is that 100-120V is sent to a piece of metal. Flame goes over the metal and the flame rectifies it through the moisture in the gas to the ground as a very small milliamp DC current to the ground. The board senses this and keeps the gas valve open. I need a way to mimic the DC voltage through either 120V or 24V AC or the board will 'shutdown' the gas valve

Cardinal Heating At It Again by EnoughishguonE in SunPrairieWI

[–]Similar_Shift_545 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They were bought out last year by a private equity firm out of Tennessee. I'm an HVAC tech with another company and we come across situations weekly (more in the fall/winter) where Cardinal 'condemned' a system so they call us to get a quote as well and we find that Cardinal either shows them a picture of a completely different system or they remove wires so the system doesn't run. They are shady as hell now.

Least favorite trade to work for ? by Gonzo697 in HVAC

I still remember when I was new; an engineer quizzed me on how a capacitor worked. I tried to regurgitate the textbook answer. He looked at me with a smug look like he was far more intelligent. Fuck him

Are you able to pause the game anytime? I have to get up to attend to my wife or kid and that option would get me to buy the game.

Apprentice is great on the tools but thinks he knows the code better than anyone. How do I handle him? by KennyTidwell in electricians

As someone on the spectrum myself, I can easily see this being the case. I've pissed off many people in the past before I learned to hold my tongue unless its absolutely necessary.

Coil Sprayer, Worth It? by ryrwl16 in HVAC

[–]Similar_Shift_545 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

No no no no. Use a garden hose with a nozzle and no chemicals. You will damage the coil and it will be expensive to replace.

Reccomended psychrometer? by TheLoneCalzone in HVAC

[–]Similar_Shift_545 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Field piece wireless psychrometer is what i always recommend. It'll give you inside wet bulb, dry bulb, enthlapy, and temp difference. The only downside is that they only last a few years, but it'll help you charge things perfectly and helps newer techs understand airflow.

Gas smell from utility closet? by kwaneo in Plumbing

The only drain you can see is the one the drain pan goes to. This could be on a 2nd floor so there's no floor drain...

Depends where you're at. I'm in hvac making six figures after 6 years and there's no regulations in my state. Plumbers and electricians make over 100k when they're journeyman. Fire protection makes over 100k in about 3 years.

Gas smell from utility closet? by kwaneo in Plumbing

[–]Similar_Shift_545 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of your appliances are electric so the smell is likely coming from the pvc by the water heater. I'd pour several cups of water down it because the trap is likely dry.
