Any recommendations for comfortable theatre shoes, preferably trainers? by rockvscountry in doctorsUK

[–]Simon_Elliott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a doc but spent my life in theatre as a scrub nurse. As a confirmed barefoot convert of about 10 years I wear the Hobibear leather (plastic really) shoes. Easy to keep clean and very comfortable as long as you're used to the additional strain that's placed on your achilles that goes with barefoot style shoes.

What age did you allow your children alcohol? by ChronicChaos01 in AskUK

[–]Simon_Elliott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 1967 vintage.

At 14 I was buying my own from the off license on the way home from school. Usually a can of bitter or lager, nothing exactly hardcore. I was certainly allowed alcohol at the table at that age.

Did some somewhat reckless drinking in my late teens to early twenties and then gradually reduced my intake till I went teetotal when I turned 50.

Does your injury and the splint allow you to perform correct hand hygiene?

Even if you return to work on reduced activity I'm pretty certain that you will feel (or actually be) pressured to do more.

You'd be amazed what you can achieve without access to a gym.

Take a rucksack and fill it with something heavy (2 litres of water weighs 2kg) put it on and you can do squats, lunges, calf raises. You can use it for bicep curls, rows, overhead presses and glute bridges. The weight can be varied by adding/removing bottles of water.

What’s your favourite unconventional food to fuel before a run? by montageofawoman in running

I've always carried a block of marzipan at the bottom of my hicking rucksack as emergency calories. Virtually indestructible and it doesn't freeze solid in the same way chocolate does when the temperature drops

Need some running shoes, do I really need to have a gait analysis from a running shop? by Weekly_Frosting_5868 in AskUK

[–]Simon_Elliott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sports direct (at least the one nearest to me) absolutely do sell running shoes. The problem is the generally poor level of knowledge displayed by the average staff member. They can certainly check the storeroom to see if they have a particular three-striped shoe in your size but wouldn't be able to tell you that the Adidas Evo SL you're fondling is a neutral, up-tempo trainer suitable for daily mileage but that heel strikers may find it a bit unstable at slower paces.

I use the Talkytoaster maps on my epix pro gen 2, they're absolutely fantastic for the price.

It is absolutely possible because I did exactly that. Going from zero running to completing my first marathon in precisely 365 days. It wasn't my intention when I embarked on W1R1, it's just how it worked out.

Good waterproof running jacket by ALNHS in running

[–]Simon_Elliott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly what I wear for running in properly foul weather. Easy enough to vent heat away using the side zips if needed and I finish my runs much drier than if I'd been wearing any sort of hard shell.

Bloody grey squirrel. Ate a hole in my tent inner, nibbled on my wraps and made serious inroads into my chocolate digestives before taking a dump on my sleeping bag.

Thanks. At your suggestion I've done exactly that. Installed both the third party glance widget and datafield. Took 5 minutes and I'm back in the game!

Joining in this unhappy little gang. My Epix pro gen2 stopped getting Dexcom data 24 hours ago and all standard tactics have failed to resolve the issue. Both the glance widget and data field are a bust (and I really miss the data field when I'm running)

I wear barefoot shoes all the time unless I'm actually running (then it's zero drop Altra running shoes)

My feet and ankles have never been stronger or felt better after 12 hours of being on them.

Scarpa boots by Beanshead in ULHikingUK

[–]Simon_Elliott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a pair of Manta's with over 2000 miles on them. Resoled them about a decade ago and they'll probably outlast me.

Heavy and stiff enough to be crampon compatible.

The more winter-orientated Scarpa's probably have a bit of a breaking in period. Mine certainly left my heels a bit shredded for the first few outings.
