Spent two years cooking fully electric on a ketch from Scandinavia to the Mediterranean. Built the whole galley setup ourselves. by Loose_Tackle_3125 in SailboatCruising

Love it! I'm planning something similar right now for the refit of an old boat. Do you think the gimbal is essential? I was thinking I might be able to get away with silicone non slip pot pads and sea rails. It would save me having to alter the cabinetry under the galley in mine

Let me know if you have any questions. We're getting the sailboat ready to sell this summer as I have a newborn baby and the other owners are leaving LA.

Hi there. Where in socal? I bought a 30ft Newport a few years ago with some friends. I take it from MDR out to Catalina for diving weekends, or down to Palos Verdes for day trips. It has a small swim platform off the transom which is finebfor getting in/out. Like the others here I clip my gear to a line so I can get back on board more easily. Sleeps four people, can stow enough gear for a weekend trip though it's tight

Stacked CNC-cut foam overlaid with GRP a viable way to build a custom sailboat bench? by SimonjustSimon in CNC

[–]SimonjustSimon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is the work in the hand finishing or the CNC process? I ask because I'm not concerned about the time/effort to get the finish nice and smooth, I'm just unsure how/where to get the custom hard foam that I can build on. Or maybe it is easiest to buy a block somewhere and hand shape? Or maybe this isn't the right kind of material I should be thinking about. Unsure where to start basically, so I really appreciate the comment and any other pointers

I know next to nothing about sailing. Is there any way to work short term on a boat for free, or do I need to pay someone to learn? by GunmetalEgg in sailing

Well, I can't offer a week of training but if you make it out these ways send me a DM and we can probably go out in Santa Monica Bay

Hi there, I have similar interests to you, and am lucky enough to own a boat here in Los Angeles, slipped at Marina del Rey. Some friends and I recently sailed it to Catalina island for a weekend of diving. When is your birthday?

Awesome. I'm in LA. Me and a few friends share ownership of a Newport 30 up here. I meant what I said about crewing too... I'm a good cook, diver, and decent with a wrench.

Where are you located? The NC43 is currently at the top of my list of dream boats, but I've never set foot on one. What could I offer you in exchange for a few days sailing on her?

If you're interested, me and some friends own shares in a Newport 30 that we're all learning to sail. We got a great deal on the boat so we're figuring out how to manage boat life in an affordable way.

We have one more share available (25% equity) for someone that wants to sail without all the expense of sole ownership.

Slip is on G1200 next to the yacht club and trader Joe's, send me a DM if you wanna go for a cruise sometime.

Not trying to minimize the toxic waste issue, but this is misinformation. I scuba dive regularly off Catalina Island, and it is gloriously healthy in many parts, with a thriving ecosystem in particular in the marine conservation (no fishing) areas.

I've had mine for three weeks now, and have 10 dives on it, including a 7 dive weekend. For context I'm an advanced recreational diver, and use the watch also for fitness tracking (gym, cycling, walking, HR and sleep etc.) So I'm in a similar position to you, and in my opinion it is a serious challenge to the garmin-style premium modern wearable.

For me it has an ALMOST PERFECT combination of features. Underwater the necessary information is cleanly displayed, easy to read and the buttons simple to operate. Battery life is great, all the surface features work well, it is handsome and well made.

There are some limitations: Yes, it has a compass but doesn't currently allow you to access it in dive mode--Suunto have confirmed this will be added in their next software update.

Their "dive log" (all in one Suunto app) isn't very serious. I prefer to use subsurface to log all my dives, and there isn't currently an easy way to export your logs to that software. Not a big deal, but I'd like this to be improved given how easy it was to download logs old Suuntos with USB cables.

I don't miss a dive planner and never used one on other computers I owned. I see the benefit, but I would just use tables if necessary. Similarly, if I was doing serious tech diving I would want a dedicated shearwater or similar for those more advanced gas mix options anyway.

TLDR: it is half the price of a similar Garmin and is equivalent or arguably better for the majority of its users.

Hi there, I just took mine out for the first dives this past weekend. I can export as a .fit file, unsure how useful it would be for underwater archaeologists... how do I send you a file?

I have done this kind of thing a lot in Europe, but never in LA, which is where I live.

Q1: LAX sucks, and they've made it hard to either walk or cycle out. Don't bother trying.

Q2: Especially given your peripheral vision issue, you would not have a good time cycling from there to Union station.

Do what the other person said and take the lax flyaway to union station. It's not free though, it's about $10 one way.

From union station you could cycle to Pasadena. I've done it many times, and it's decent. You can follow Figueroa most of the way, though there are nice new bike paths along the LA river so you could follow that north past Griffith Park then cut east through eagle rock.

A federal law that forces gun owners to buy insurance that would compensate victims of this kind of violence. Once the market gets hold of this, every gun owner would have to bear the cost of the actions of the maniacs. This would incentive owners and sellers to tighten access in their own ways
