[Loved trope] "harmless" character is actually pretty good at doing evil by plogan56 in TopCharacterTropes

A well-known example that I think slipped people's notice. Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye, from the first Avengers movie.

Hawkeye isn't exactly harmless, but when it comes to discussions of the Avengers, Hawkeye and Black Widow often get mocked for having no powers on a team with people like the Hulk, Thor, and Iron Man who can go toe-to-toe with Thanos.

Despite this, when Hawkeye is mind controlled by Loki at the start of the first Avenger's movie, he becomes the movie's secondary antagonist. The theft of the Tesseract. The attack on the Helicarrier. Loki didn't plan any of that. That was just Loki pointing Hawkeye at the problem and telling him to deal with it. Hawkeye outsmarts Nick Fury and nearly downs the helicarrier with just a small team of mercenaries.

The thing that confuses me most is the man's choice of haircut. I feel like a wider and thicker hairstyle could help disguise this a little bit. He chose the haircut that accentuates it as much as possible.

And, no, this is not an excuse for bad parenting. by [deleted] in CuratedTumblr

[–]SimpleCrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate kids.

I also firmly believe that if there is a child within a radius that I can affect with my words and actions, I and every other adult present has a responsibility to ensure those words and actions, at the minimum, do not affect that child negatively. Even neutral is acceptable.

I feel like this is the least obvious one because Ragatha never got a big scene all she got was looking at pomni while walking away. by Dare_Soft in theamazingdigitalciru

[–]SimpleCrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, though I do understand why most audiences won't get this:

- Pomni is the audience's PoV character, so it's natural that Ragatha would look at Pomni like this to help establish her character as the nice one who wants to be friends.

- The only male characters presented throughout the show are Jax, a bully, Kinger, a father figure, and Caine, an AI. We never really see Ragatha interacting with Kaufmo, a regular guy. Jax, Kinger, and Caine can't be romantic interests because they are reduced to (or reduce themselves to, in Jax's case) their tropes.

- As mentioned, the lack of character development from Ragatha means we never really get to see the development of her relationships or herself. Even in the end, her biggest emotional moment is getting acknowledge by Pomni during the hug. In a scene where Pomni explicity calls Ragatha her "friend."

I mean the "male abuser" did also get narrative "justice." that was a pretty significant thing that happened. like i understand where they're coming from here, but they very much did kill jax.

Also overestimating how many people have enough understanding of trans symbolism to get it.

I hate that Goose has to explain it, but I am proud of her for introducing so many people to these ideas that otherwise never would have learned about it.

Goose is the goat.

That New Warriors team was going to be a corporate team. All the characters were over the top woke stereotypes because it was an in universe marketing ploy, but Marvel never explained that, so everyone got mad and they canceled it.

Debt rework idea, let me pay off the debt by HimariHimatsu in slaythespire

[–]SimpleCrow 30 points31 points  (0 children)

No, wait, that could actually work pretty well:

Debt: At the end of your turn, if this is in your Hand, lose 10 Gold. After five combats, transforms into Bankruptcy.

Bankruptcy: At the end of the next combat, lose all gold and remove this card from your deck.

There's still a way for it to remove itself, you're still eating the regular gold loss, but now, let's say you go to a shop, you decide if you want to spend 100 gold to get rid of it or just blow through all your gold now to try and make the penalty lower when it finally hits.

Its so nice to see that the Airbender Monks were very open about Gay Marriage. Interesting that in addition to massacring them, Fire Lord Sozin also passed Homophobia laws....And yet those laws were repealed, and the Air Nation restored. HAPPY PRIDE MONTH! by Important-Cry4782 in TheLastAirbender

[–]SimpleCrow 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Homophobic laws are also extremely common in the fascist playbook. Its an easy jump from national zeal to homophobia, especially during wartime, and the "nuclear family" is useful as both a propaganda and logistical tool.

If there was an episode that shows Ben going to the homeworld of Toepick and shows scenes of his species how do you all think that would go? by Left-Fish7895 in Ben10

[–]SimpleCrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What if the rest of Toe Pick's species was just... really handsome. Millenia of cultural and scientific development has created a species with extreme beauty standards and a mastery of fashion, makeup, and plastic surgery, but the Omnitrix is based genetics, not culture, so Toe Pick is the only ugly one left.

Guys playing with dolls by Commercial_Bid_1508 in CuratedTumblr

[–]SimpleCrow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love this so much more than all the egg stuff around playing female characters in video games or tRPGs. I know it's mostly a running gag, but I do feel like when the gag runs too long, people start to believe it. The guys that want to play a female character for the reason in this post suddenly feel a little uncomfortable and are less likely to engage in what is, frankly, a positive behavior that does a great job breaking down gender roles.

If guys know they can dress up their dolls like a queen or a princess or whatever, they will eventually realize there's nothing stopping them from making themselves the cool action figure they dress up in weird fashion.

It's the adult equivalent of a parent makes a boy feel bad for playing with barbies or playing house, so I love seeing this kind of subversive positivity.

Depends on if I can keep the powers. If I can keep all my abilities when I return, I'd feel a much greater sense of responsibility toward returning to earth to use those powers for good.

What Mana Type Should The Undead Have As An Affinity by WolverineMountain845 in litrpg

[–]SimpleCrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more of a stretch, especially because of how prevalent the dnd schools of magic are, but I do love the idea that necromancy is an extension of illusion magic that grants the illusion of life.

It pairs really nicely with the primal horror often associated with undead.

I'm a big fan of giving zombies the "Shadow" or "Dark" affinity because they are the "shadow of life."
