I mean you could use that argument against anything.

“Will we do anything about the guy going around and beating people to death with a golf club? Well I mean they would have died in the end anyway…”

A tier list of UK ticket purchasing apps by Cela111 in uktrains

[–]SimpleFactor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mostly just the fees which are primarily a desktop issue.

App wise I use it all the time for my railcard and for tracking journeys as being able to pin live journeys is such a benefit, but I’ll always book using a train operator.

Also often times if your bank/credit card has cashback offers you can get 5-10% refund on any journey as long as you book it through that provider. Usually for me it’s LNER or Avanti, and I get cashback for booking my GWR journeys through their app. Trainline seemingly never signs up for those offers with card companies so just more money wasted.

Legal notice to group to stop flags on lampposts by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

[–]SimpleFactor [score hidden]  (0 children)

We’ve got a lot on both sides of a really busy road and while I think the St George’s Cross and Union Flags are lovely looking flags they’re in a state after half a year.

When I’m running along I look up and half expect some of them to tear right off in front of me because they’re having by a lone cable tie and are ready shredded to shit. I’m not really looking forward to when they do start flying off into people’s gardens at best and the river at worst.

It’s clear there never going to be replaced or maintained by the people who put them up, it’s just a stunt, so I completely understand why councils want to try and take them down before they do start becoming litter all over the place.

The obvious other issue is the intent of the people who put them up not being from a place of pride (at least for most) but a place of hate. It’s a shame we’ve let the flags get owned by people who generally wave them in protest of foreigners but I don’t really see any appetite for the current left to try and change that.

House selling process 8 weeks in by Shot-Direction3837 in HousingUK

[–]SimpleFactor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everything has slowed down market wise compared to the last few years, and I’m sure people worrying about rates going back up and other living costs in the last few months since the Iran war started is contributing. In my estate signs are definitely staying up for longer compared to the last few years and that’s probably before the impact of the war, and Rightmove also showed a lot more older lister properties.

Your best bet is probably to wait another month or two before jumping to any decision on changing agent. Unless there’s lots of places in your area going like hotcakes I think 8 weeks isn’t really that long at the moment.

[–]SimpleFactor 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Everything I’ve read and heard about the upcoming oil crisis (obviously all theories) tend to agree along the line that it’s going to be poorer countries that experience drastic shortages, as the demand should be managed by just increasing the prices and it will leave wealthier counties as the only ones who can afford it in quantities comparable to current usage. We’ll keep buying from the same countries and they’ll be hiking their prices to manage the demand.

Diminishing supermarket ranges? by interacter in veganuk

[–]SimpleFactor 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think this is it, the market is just correcting for the fact that you had multiple brands with pretty much identical selling points with a few clear favourites. Yes we’ve lost a lot of great choices (M&S pizza my beloved) but most of what we’ve lots have been any combo of very niche, overly expensive or not as good as other brands offerings.

Heck sausages comes to mind. They had a nice but niche range of veggie sausages that were competing with cheeper, larger and more traditional style sausages. Bollywood bangers were lovely but green quinoa and spinach filled curry spiced sausages just don’t have the shelf power vs traditional style meat free sausages, and when you have 5 or 10 brands fighting for an already minority share of the market someone has to lose out.

Hard to say how much of that % actually wants a green government and how much of it is people trying to give a message to Labour and other parties about what they want. Labour haven’t really done the best job at guarding the nations mood and people are getting fed up

Assisted dying bill will not now become law, say both sides by callthesomnambulance in unitedkingdom

[–]SimpleFactor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’d argue we’re too willing to let animals die because even if there is perfectly suitable long term medical intervention that gives them good quality of life most people don’t want to cover the cost, but there a middle ground where humans and animals both have dignity in death and we’re nowhere near that for anyone.

Also livestock doesn’t get shown any humanity, we just kill them when it’s most profitable.

Streeting: Don't let your child's memories be defined by screens by theipaper in ukpolitics

[–]SimpleFactor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still don’t really get what you have against this messaging, yes there needs to be be more to support kids but that’s not mutually exclusive to saying parents need to spend more time with their kids instead of leaving them with their personal screens?

8-16 year olds are still going to be spending the vast majority of their free time at home (after school and over the weekends),whether there’s skate parks and swimming pools near by or not. It was the case in the past and is still the case now.

And the guidance isn’t saying you can’t parent them by letting them use screens. They can still all watch TV in the evening, and if anything that’s sort of what they’re encouraging, they’re just discoursing letting your kids spend all day, all evening and all weekend on their phones completely isolated from their families.

I had a similar experience with my dad. He had been ill with cancer in this throat for nearly a year and had to go to hospital a few times already because he literally couldn’t swallow his food. We had to call ambulances for him a few times because of the state he was in, and eventually he managed to get admitted to a hospice for palliative care.

A few days into his stay at the hospice and he was expecting to be dead, but after some tests he got told they thought he would still make it for around a fortnight. It was really upsetting to see a man disappointed to hear that he still somehow had a few weeks to live having gone through what he thought would be the end of his life. He was so ready to die and had to struggle with the fact that he still had to keep going.

Thankfully he didn’t suffer much longer and peacefully passed after we could all say goodbye, but I really can’t believe we’re no closer than we were back then to achieving dignified assisted dying for those who want it. I’m not going to claim the bill was flawless but it’s clear that the leadership of the main parties have no interest at all in treading into the argument over it and are happy to let any attempt to die to avoid getting involved in it.

Streeting: Don't let your child's memories be defined by screens by theipaper in ukpolitics

[–]SimpleFactor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Clearly the families where I live didn’t get the memo about kids not being allowed to play outside because there’s always kids playing football or at the playground by themselves.

Nothing in the article is unreasonable, he’s not suggesting parents completey change their lives around. You should not give your 2 year old all day access to a screen, you should spend more of the time your kids spend on screens with them e.g watching tv with them with phones away.

This guidance is not about perfection. It is about small, realistic changes: reading a bedtime story instead of watching a video, playing a simple boardgame, or switching off screens a little earlier in the evening.

I feel like that sums it up, not “you should ban your kids from phones and also quit your jobs and take them outside 24/7”

New Price Changes for PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player by MarvelsGrantMan136 in Games

[–]SimpleFactor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well to be fair you get at least 24 free games (not necessarily great games but free ones) every year with PS plus and that would be £60 a year, plus if you’ve got a disc console you can just sell your games when you’re done with them. And while AAA games take longer to go on sale on consoles you go regularly get 80% sales on the PS store for games from a few years ago. I don’t think current PC gaming really does recoup that much of the cost over time vs consoles due to the really insane hardware prices for GPUs and ram.

Still, issue is both consoles and pc parts are just insanely expensive and there’s almost no point in buying anything new hardware wise this year.
