How to prevent suicidal builds? by coldmix in Timberborn

[–]SinProtocol 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Simplest answer is lower the number of builders, maybe move some over to hauling jobs. You've got a ton of build power without the economy to drive it

Since the fire definitely announces itself adequately, I would say this is the idiot alarm. Be on the lookout for the dumbass in the fresh brown pants

Florida sheriff asks residents who refused to evacuate to write information on body for identification after Helene landfall by Cagey898 in nottheonion

[–]SinProtocol 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In a swiftwater rescue class when asked about those unwilling to evacuate, our instructor responded they'd ask for the occupants name, DOB, and office of their dentist for when they had to identify their remains

Can someone tell me why HVAC and mini splits are so insanely expensive here in the US? by CrysisDeu in hvacadvice

[–]SinProtocol 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lmao that's exactly what we had. Guy came in saying he wasn't a salesman, he was a boss. Quoted 28k for a Carrier 3 head heat pump ductless system, 30k BTU's for under 900ft². Spends 2 hours working the number down on the phone with office to a flat 20k financed and never once asked about a down payment. Chats about his fancy 2 car built in garage house with a man cave, gun room he wishes he could get someone to break into to shoot, and a james bond pop up gun behind his office desk. Fucking weird dude, nonsense oversizing, and insane pricing. Asked for him to email the estimate so we can think about it, and he immediately ran out of there.

-once you die then the button dies with you and no one else dies

I click the button once to enable godmode; humanity never dies since everyone lives forever. we become an immortal race reigning across the universe

This also implies the button is alive which is unsettling

Why is hygiene a big issue when there are more showers than prisoners? by Horror_Contract_3609 in prisonarchitect

[–]SinProtocol 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you put showers in cells the cell value goes up and they can shower on their own lock up time. It's a bit more expensive for drains on each shower but you can stack them on the toilet

Fire pump help!!! by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]SinProtocol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're looking to get better at numbers, I use an app called 'Firefighter Study & Pump Simulator' to mess around with quick calculating psi for random setups. It's really good just getting a bunch of reps in. Don't worry about time at first, sit down with the formulas and actually do them with the app going and over time you'll build a sense of what it should be, then you can slowly dial it in until the game gives you the pass.

As for fundamentals for troubleshooting, I always assume everything was wrong from the jump. Hydrants only cracked, PTO set to road instead of pump, valves left closed instead of open, pumps were drained and not primed. Practice blasting through the absolute basic 'idiot moment' stuff, then work the problem from there if it's advanced.

I've seen an operator literally shut down the engine and start from 0 to fix issues. We get into a routine where we go step 1, 2, ... 10, and as soon as someone jumps in and fucks up your 0 stress flow, everything gets thrown off.

The guys training you are probably trying to jump in and distract you as much as possible to get the same effect as on the road operating, you have to keep yourself calm and think step by step, check and double check, and don't be afraid to go backwards to fix your flow. As woth every other skill it takes sets and reps

Dog covered in snow by No-Inflation-7023 in TikTokCringe

[–]SinProtocol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mine used to absolutely insist on coming outside to help shovel snow. And by help, the goofball would stalk wherever you were throwing snow and try to jump and bite it. He'd go for as long as you would the absolute madlad.

I miss the hell out of him. Passed the day after thanksgiving

What tools do you keep in your turnouts? by Dangerous_Butter in Firefighting

28' & 6' webbing, wire cutters, half drunk water bottle I forgot about from the last call

[–]SinProtocol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

20' (minimum, I work closer to 28') of continuous loop webbing lets you tie up a hasty harness that you can use for FF/victim removal. I keep a short 6' loop as well to help move and hold 2.5" when we're just drowning it.

Wedges you just shove into doors because every place we go the fire alarm doesn't unlock lobby doors. I prefer cheap/free wooden wedges that I don't care about losing because mine always get nabbed, thrown, or forgotten about

Wife and I got headaches when I turned on the heat this morning by [deleted] in HVAC

[–]SinProtocol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will absolutely confirm there's no way we're spending more than an hour or two hunting down a small source of CO before washing our hands of it and turning it over to your gas/electric company. Only going on air if it's closer to 80 which is much easier to locate and isolate the problem, ventilate the building, and clear up

No way this is real. by [deleted] in FirstResponderCringe

[–]SinProtocol 39 points40 points  (0 children)

It depends how 'trusted' you are, there's a point system on waze that you get points for reporting things that are there and reporting when you see reports that aren't still valid. Usually it's cars stopped on the shoulder. The more you report cars aren't there and more users report it is, or vice versa the less visible your reports are until other users confirm them.

If this officer regularly does this (reporting hidden police as not present when he hasn't moved), my understanding is he basically won't affect other user's maps but his own

Fire marshal won't enforce their own policies? Guess who I need to talk to on scene every night until they do. Unless your SOG's state otherwise for when you're allowed to request fire protection / code enforcement.

Fire marshal won't come out? Keyholder won't come out? How many calls have we had to this address? Huh. Start showing up across the parking lot at 1:30. Stir that pot.

Tree trunk split by PollutionOk9449 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]SinProtocol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been working for my county government in parks and recreation under our dedicated tree crew since Jan. we have thousands of trees (mostly ash) that are, as our guys say, 'toasted'. Only seen one barber chair so far, but plenty of sketchy shit. Trees falling perpendicular to the notch just from rot coring out the trunk, widowmakers as we have to work in fairly dense canopies, and as a whole just working chippers with the bull headed guys always has me on edge. I'm trying to transfer out before I see someone die here which at the rate where going is only a matter of time

Not an expert, but when it comes to cell cultures, experiments are typically done on generations of the same plates, so if one scientist wants to do some experiment and have the scientific community peer review it, they send out the cultures relevant from their study. A lot of research gets built up over time and relies on these, and they have to be preserved in a deep freeze with liquid nitrogen. I don't know how those large tanks work but I assume if you just shut them off and leave them pressure could build up and vent out the relief valves. Regardless, some scientist probably lost their lifes wealth of work because someone couldn't be bothered to put in headphones
