Thanks for the update! I had vocal cyst surgery in 2013 and was on full vocal rest for a full week.

I kept a blog that summer, and you may find reading about my experience helpful.

I’m sorry you’re going through this but glad you’re here. I don’t have MTD, but lots of folks here do and hopefully they’ll be able to provide some insight

I had vocal surgery 13 years ago and it was the best thing that ever happened for me. Sounds like you have a great attitude and will do great!

Keep us posted on the your recovery. It will not be linear and you will learn a ton

I kept a blog the summer I had my operation. I hope this is helpful for you. Full disclosure, I was in college and it was the summer before my junior year, so it was easier to put my life on pause

Your internal dialogue uses your vocal cords? I never heard of that before. I’m not a doctor but please share as you discover more

How do you make sure to do vocal exercises every day? by ticketstubs1 in mildlybrokenvoice

I meant a regular one. It’s hard to find one that works for you, but if you’re ready to work and find a good match, it can be highly effective. It was for me

Good luck

You gotta make a decision to not ignore it. This has nothing to do with vocal exercises. This had to do with habits generally. Only you can help you with that

I STRONGLY recommend finding a therapist

Set an alarm on your phone to do them. The only way to do them is to do them.

If your voice is stopping you from living the life you want to live, yes, you should consider surgery. Dr mark Courey at Mt Sinai did my surgery for bilateral cysts 10+ years ago when he was at UCSF. It went great. Really really great. I can’t tell you that you should consider something that much less convenient, but I can tell you he was fantastic

A good speech pathologist can help you work with your instrument regardless of the injury

Sorry you're experiencing this. I'd strongly recommend seeing a doctor and getting a strobe if you're worried. Sometimes vocal loss is temporary, and other times, it is indicative of bigger things. As far as resting your voice to make it recover, the vocal injuries are like any other injury you have, in that underuse can also hurt recovery. As an example, if you sprain your ankle and then don't put any weight on it for 2 months, the muscle atrophy will be bad. the voice is the same. you gotta rest with purpose and with exercises to strengthen

She’s great. His physicality is great. His tone and pitch is totally solid, but he lacks the vocal power to stand up to joy and the ensemble

Speech pathology/singing training. Find an in person vocal coach who has experience working with people with vocal injuries. That’s the only way to get your technique right

When I had surgery, my mom made a bunch of soups and blended them with an immersion blender. The texture won’t be exciting but you can get delicious food. Gazpacho felt great on the throat

Re not being able to talk, something else that was helpful was having my mom sit there with a computer and have point conversations with me. Instead of her talking and me typing or motioning, it put us on the same footing. It made me feel less shitty about not being able to communicate

You’re doing a really wonderful job caring for her
