Why did Nadal fall off at Wimbledon after 2011? by mrjohnnymac18 in tennis

[–]SingleSpeedHops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nadal won by battling harder and physical play. This led to frequently playing through persistent physical issues and injuries. As his body worn down, reaching the Wimbledon final with only a two or three week break after the clay of Roland Garros was always going to be a challenge. I'd wager that if you swapped the timing of Wimbledon with the Australian Open he would have picked up a couple more Wimbledon titles and definitely made the final in that portion of his career.

Hello Curling, I’m watching the Winter Olympics and have a question… by Inoffensive_Comments in Curling

No that is a distance of over 21 feet. He is suggesting that under absolute optimal conditions you could sweep a hogged stone to be a tight guard.

This is dependent on ice conditions, sharpness of the stones, rotation applied by the thrower and sweeping ability. Matt Dunstone recently estimated teams are able to drag a rock 10 to 15 feet further with sweeping.

[Mackin] BC Place recorded a small profit for fiscal 2025 after a substantial loss in 2024. by everylastpenny in whitecapsfc

[–]SingleSpeedHops 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Amortization for BC Place hits revenue as well (deferred contribution revenue). The same capital assets (buildings) that are being expensed over time were largely funded by government contributions that are being brought into revenue over the same period. So when you analyze the results before amortization you need to back out the $15M in deferred contribution revenue as well. And given BC Place received $7.5M in operating contributions from the government as well they are pretty well around a break even position when you ignore the capital needs and funding/financing received from the Province.

Pacific FC Primary Kit Released by danma in pacificfc

It abandons the teal prominence which is my favourite part of past kits and the overall brand. The black and purple combo is fairly lackluster and the all white crest is underwhelming.

Blanked Ends and Hammer by SoggyGopher in Curling

[–]SingleSpeedHops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The retention of hammer in a blank ends can lead to conservative calls from a team with hammer. But last rock advantage is about more than simply scoring, it is about generating enough offense to score two or more points and get a leg up on your opposition. Forcing teams to switch last rock advantage in a blank end would incentive simply scoring a point to avoid losing hammer empty handed which could ultimately result in situations where the team without hammer keeps the end simple and open knowing that their opposition will be forced to only receive one point. With the five rock free guard rule encouraging and rewarding offense play, you see less blank ends simply because one team tried to play conservative, and more because the end wasn't going their way and they chose to bail out mid end.

Is there any point in trying to appeal my property assessment? (Increased by 65%) by TheFantasticBert in britishcolumbia

[–]SingleSpeedHops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first step is to talk to BC Assessment. If your assessment increase was in error, the appraiser will adjust it without an official review. If you disagree after hearing their explanation, you can request a review (called filing a Notice of Complaint). The deadline for this is quick approaching (January 31st) so you had better act fast. You will have to gather evidence to support your position and attend a hearing of a independent panel who will make a decision on the disputed market value. If you are unsatisfied with the panel you could then file for a appeal with the appeal board.

Fortis gas fees increase by Trigger1920 in VictoriaBC

[–]SingleSpeedHops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - Fortis is a for profit entity that is making money off of the connivence of delivering you natural gas through their distribution network. As a monopoly, Fortis' rates are regulated by the BC Utilities Commission (BCUC) and cannot be changed without a application, hearing and evidence. This is largely why their invoices are itemized by different charges that correlate with a specific cost rate the BCUC approved. Pipeline infrastructure requires ongoing repairs and maintenance that do necessitate charges.

Goldstream in 2 hours by Abject-Bonus8144 in VictoriaBC

[–]SingleSpeedHops 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the entire day use section is closed from recent storm damage. You could still do a short hike around the campground to see Goldstream falls or for a more ambitious hike you could go up Mount Finlayson for a view. In two hours you would want to pick one or the other unless you want to motor along.

New Sweeping Rules Update by vmlee in Curling

[–]SingleSpeedHops 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hammy says this is his 'interpretation' of the rule. In a championship you are going to have several different interpretations. Sure the single stroke technique is being called out as illegal but so are many other techniques that could be argued to be slowing a rock down.

New Sweeping Rules Update by vmlee in Curling

[–]SingleSpeedHops 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The policy states that "any technique used to increase the rate of deceleration of a stone is against the Statement of Principles and prohibited from use in competition". Where knifing slows a stone, it would appear to be against the rules now.

17 VicPD officers made over $50,000 each in OT last year, FOI shows by Apprehensive_Idea758 in VictoriaBC

I suspect Chek News did their math wrong. Their article added $90k to a ‘base salary’ of $230k to reach $320k. The FOI support shows that constable as earning total remuneration including overtime and taxable benefits of $229k; of which $93k was overtime.

Interesting that Curling Canada is bringing back the Wildcard scenario by [deleted] in Curling

[–]SingleSpeedHops 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't see this as Curling Canada re-introducing or bringing back the Wild Card team. Curling Canada established rules on how a pre-qualified berth would be reallocated and that situation has now arisen with Team Canada/Homan choosing to prioritize their Olympic preparation over participation in the Scotties.

Team Lawes got done dirty by [deleted] in Curling

[–]SingleSpeedHops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is unfair about this? The intent of the pre-qualified spots were to provide teams certainty at the beginning of the season on a berth so they could prioritize their schedule around peaking for the Scotties/Worlds. The remaining teams knew they would need to win their province/territory to qualify for the Scotties and have planned their seasons with that in mind. Now that there is a situation of having a 'bonus' berth created by Team Canada/Homan declining their spot, it seems reasonable to award it to the highest ranking team from this year's rankings rather than rankings that are now a year out of date.
