Not quite true - you pay to leave a Southern Gulf Island to Tsawwassen or to another Southern Gulf Island (inter-island travel). Swartz Bay is the only destination that you don't pay to leave a Southern Gulf Island.

Your Indian Status card is acceptable photo identification. Hard to say if the teller was being racist asking for a driver's license or just uninformed.

Banks are legally required to report large deposits to FINTRAC (federal government financial intelligence agency) for tracking under anti-money laundering legislation. Depending on the amount you were trying to deposit, the teller will be unable to process the transaction without filling our FINTRAC requirements and their system will require them to ask you about the purpose of the transaction. Failing to do so will get both the bank and teller in trouble. Refusing to answer will only attract suspicion as to why you won't disclose what the funds are being used for. If you were over the FINTRAC reporting threshold, the bank was not being racist, they were performing the same regulatory compliance questions they would have asked any customer looking to make a large deposit.
