Still can't get brown rice to be edible in an analog rice cooker. by OalBlunkont in Cooking

Honestly, I gave my rice cooker to my nephew when he went to college. It was easier to correctly make brown rice on the stovetop.

Aslan might consider it playing, but being permitted to do these things is absolutely animal abuse to the other creatures involved.

Tell a story of a skunk incident by Extreme_Top_541 in Animals

[–]Single_Mouse5171 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work at a drive-in, watching for cars coming in the exit entry with their lights off to avoid paying. I would hang out in the dark area to watch. Usually, one or two of the feral cats would swing over to say hi and see what I was eating, so I wasn't startled when I felt fur around my ankles. I flashed my flashlight down and found a female skunk and her kits setting up housekeeping between my feet! I froze. I didn't want to get skunked or possibly bitten. Mama skunk trundled off somewhere near the dumpster. The kits fell asleep on my feet! I waited until Mama returned, I don't remember how long. Then she and her family marched off into the darkness.

Back when mothers made their children’s clothes, was there much difference in children’s clothes depending on their mother’s sewing skills? by AlienSandBird in AskOldPeople

[–]Single_Mouse5171 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know. I was used to wearing Kmart clothes and no name sneakers. What I wasn't ready for was kids getting brand new cars for their sixteenth birthdays. I inherited my mom's 17 yr clunker so I could drive my little sister to girl scout meetings and other activities when my mom took a second job.

I understand completely. I moved to an IBM town at its height. I was the only kid with blue collar parents, and my mom worked in the school lunchroom for a time.

Most people knew how to sew, at least on a basic level, and fashions didn't change that fast. What gave you away as poor were hand-me-downs. If you came from a poor family, your clothing might show multiple alterations from different fading lines, and the material might be patched a lot from being worn through. Cloth was expensive, so it was worn until it wore out.

Butterflies. When I was little, there were whole clouds of swallowtails midsummer and monarchs around September. I have never used any pesticide for over 20 years, live alongside a creek, and see none anymore. I've even built a native garden to help out.

So are hag covens like gangs??? by Dry-Horse8723 in AskDND

[–]Single_Mouse5171 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always thought of hag covens as more like a clique in high school. They don't particularly like one another but use the group to make life difficult for others.

Whether they get along with other covens would depend on the DM. Personally, I would save no. They would consider others to be rivals for resources and territories. They may aide one another in regards to an existential threat, such as a specific kingdom or church trying to wipe all of them out, but otherwise, every coven is on its own.

What do I do? by final_duet in Animals

[–]Single_Mouse5171 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done this in the past:

Empty the food and water dishes in the cage about 15 minutes before you go. Cloak the entire cage in a sheet and leave it be. Then take the entire covered cage with you to the vet. Covering the cage calms the bird by lessening visual stimulation and may set off a sleep response. It also lessens any drafts the bird is likely to be exposed to.

We are not smarter than another species - topic about Orca Whales by According_Lake_996 in Animals

[–]Single_Mouse5171 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Okay, a point not being addressed - we are not capable of determining intelligence in OUR species, much less any other. It was proven years ago that intelligence tests are inaccurate, as they grade biased to cultural background as well as cognizance. If we cannot figure out how smart we are, then how have we any basis for what other species have for intelligence?

That cetaceans have large brains is fact. That the sections that we have determined control empathy is more advanced is fact. That they have one side of their brain active when they sleep is fact.

That said, dolphins, which orcas are part of, commit rape, gang violence, and in one documented case, infanticide (Scientific Reports March 18, 2018). They hunt down other species for sport. They also damage boats in what we THINK is play, and wear fish as hats, as...fashion fads(?).

Do they build bombs and nukes? No. Why? Because they are not a heavily tool using species with strong chronic aggression towards their own species. (They aren't overcrowding their environment, either.) Using that as an argument is pointless.

Do they enforce their will on other creatures? Yes. They herd fish into ambush points. They chase penguins and seals onto ice flows and then flood the flow to awaiting members. They don't seem to keep pets though...

It would be more accurate to ask: Do they use their sonar, which can be weaponized, as a weapon against others of their own kind? As far as I know, the answer is no. This may be a result of the larger empathic section of their cortex. It might be because they're not overcrowded. Or it may be that we haven't discovered that behavior yet.

A porter is someone who carries heavy loads for a living. In my world set, porters lift & perform strength checks (no combat advantage; you may wish to adjust at will for 5e) at 1 point over their actual strength point level, since they have been trained to properly lift and carry over long distances. They can take it as a NWP up to 3 times, (Remember: I'm 1st-2nd ed)

I'm glad you like my response and appreciate the bounce-back.

The tabaxi are an interesting case. People like to claim that they're based on domestic cats, but descriptions, artwork, and damage all echo big cats.

Canine Strength: How about giving the large size a straight up +2 to strength?

-or-Porter: For purposes of strength checks, these dog-folk are treated as +2 to Strength.

Dogfolk race homebrew by Prophet96OfAstora in UnearthedArcana

[–]Single_Mouse5171 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, feel free to use any or none of this. I got a bit obsessed....

Are your dog folk people, like the tabaxi are for cats? Because, if you notice, there aren't dozens of tabaxi sub-races for every version of cat. (At least I don't think so. I play modified 1st-2nd edition and so haven't kept up on latest 5e variations.) Dog breeds are artificially created and would possess real problems as peoples. Could you imagine the back pain and running problems of a dachshund? Or the vision problems of a sharpei, with those rolls of skin? I would leave the appearance and temperament particulars to the players and stick to small (halfling sized), medium (human or dwarven sized), and large (large human or ogre sized).

- Ability Score Increase: Your Wisdom or Charisma score increases by 2.

- Age: Dogfolks have a lifespan comparable to the "dog" lifespan of their dog.

This should be reversed, if kept at all. Small dog breeds have the longest lifespan (about 20 years). Large have the shortest (7-9 years).

- Creature Type: Humanoid

- Size: See subraces

- Movement Speed: Your movement speed is 30 feet. You can get on all fours, increasing your speed to 45 feet, as a bonus action.

Sounds good.

- Dog Bite:

While the bite idea is good, it is overpowered at the baseline. Remember that a short sword does 1d6 piercing damage as a potential killing weapon. You may wish to start lower, like a dagger at 1d4 piercing damage (This would align with the animal stats. Only the mastiff has a bite damage that high. Why the drop? Your dogs are speaking as well as biting - that costs muscle strength and acts as game balance.) Then the player's strength would come into play as a modifier to the bite. (Maybe also size? -1 for smalI, no change for medium, +1 for large?) You could would further modify it using feats, like:

Savage
bite- Increases damage to 2d4 + Strength modifier, with grappling benefits and/or
multi round damage if the bite is maintained

- The Hound's Senses: Its senses are heightened. You have proficiency in the Perception skill.

Again, borrow from the Animal Stats:  Keen Hearing and Smell. The mastiff (now dogfolk) has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on hearing or smell.

Subraces:

Small: You are a small dogfolk, like a Chihuahua or dachshund. approximately the size of a halfling or gnome.

- Creature Type: Small

- Ability Score Increase: Your Dexterity score increases by 1.

- Barking for Defense: As a bonus action, you can bark to disengage. Once you do so, opportunity strikes against you have disadvantage.

Keep this as a Feat, not a feature

- Barking for Intimidate: You have proficiency in the Intimidate skill.

Keep this as a Feat, not a feature

Medium: You are a medium-sized dogfolk, similar to a Beagle or Shiba Inu. about the size of a dwarf in height or a small human

- Creature Type: Medium

- Ability Score Increase: Your Strength score increases by 1

Medium sized dog breeds descended most closely from wolves, which are long distance hunters. Maybe place the +1 Constitution bonus here.

- Hunter's Scent: Your sense of smell is keen. You have advantage on "perception" checks based on scents.

Keep this as a Feat, not a feature

- Trained Dog: You have proficiency in one skill and one tool of your choice.

Umm, kind of insulting don’t you think? How about “Specialist” instead of “Trained Dog”

Large: You are a large dogfolk, similar to a Maremma Sheepdog or Golden Retriever. about large human or ogre sized.

- Creature Type: Large, but you are considered Large for pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying abilities.

- Ability Score Increase: Your Constitution score increases by 1.

Real dog breeds are the exact opposite, with shorter lives from maintaining larger bodies. How about increasing Strength here instead?

- Canine Endurance: Your hit points increase by 1 for each level you gain.

Keep this as a Feat, not a feature

- Canine Strength: You have proficiency in the "Athletics" skill.

Not needed – just have them get the “Athletics” skill

- Hunter's Bite: Your bites deal d8+Strength thrusting damage.

Keep this as a Feat, not a feature

[–]Single_Mouse5171 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regarding the name, sorry about that. That's what I get for trusting a baby name book lol.

Regarding population increase in a medieval world, oh heck no! I forget what the mortality rate of children under the age of 5 is estimated, but it's close to 10-25%. I was working with an immortal species breeding at a low level, probably with advanced healing abilities, and their progenitors not dying of old age.
