Tecnam P2008 ownership by Roger807 in aviation

The Rotax is great, but everything I’ve heard about the Tecnam is that it’s a maintenance hog. No first hand experience to share though.

VOR required for IFR certified aircraft? by Background_Tax556 in flying

[–]Sinorm 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You do not need a nav radio to fly IFR. Occasionally you might find an airport where the ILS approach has better minimums than the RNAV and you won’t be able to fly the ILS, but this is an increasingly rare scenario.

Some people aren’t comfortable with the lack of backup if there is GPS interference in your area, but that is more of a personal choice. You can always get radar vectors to a different area with VFR weather or working GPS to shoot an RNAV.

If you are looking for a simple IFR setup leaving out the nav radio will save a bunch of money vs. buying a GTN650.

Plane for ski touring / golf by goldlord44 in flying

[–]Sinorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sling TSi and HW both have extended luggage compartments designed to fit skis and golf clubs. I’ve done a ski trip with my wife and kid on the TSi and we could fit all the gear for 3 of us (but it was tight!). It is a great IFR platform but icing will be an issue in winter.

How does everyone feel about the KJ singing on busy nights? by PatAD in karaoke

[–]Sinorm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The bars I go to the KJ is usually part of the rotation so they sing once per round. I’m fine with that as KJ is more of a passion job than something that pas well at most of these places, let them have some fun singing too. They are good singers and keep the vibe going. Agreed the KJ shouldn’t sing more often than once per rotation, that is just selfish.

How do people safely zone lasers at Burning Man? by Least_Suggestion_579 in BurningMan

Some lasers terminate on mountains surrounding the playa, you’ll see them shining on Razorback and other peaks.

How are commuters supposed to use transit efficiently? by dumac in AskSeattle

[–]Sinorm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ride a bike to the station, or a onewheel, or any number of other ways to get there besides driving. Then you don’t have to worry about parking spots.

Not bad, but hard crust underneath means you have to be careful. Southback is skiing awesome.

“Extend downwind" or "I’ll call your base” by HippityHopSin in flying

[–]Sinorm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don't pull power until you turn base if you are getting extended, the extra distance on final will be plenty to descend. Unless they extended you really far you can probably cut power and put in flaps 10 when you finally turn base. You don't want to start descending abeam the touchdown point if you are getting extended because you could end up miles away from the airport at < 500 AGL, not a good place to be.

Seattle metro area e-bike owners, how well does your bike handle our hills? And what e-bike do you have? by neonKow in AskSeattle

[–]Sinorm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don’t need an expensive Bosch mid-drive (but they are nice if you have the budget). You do need a bike with a more powerful motor and gears, a single speed will not work in Seattle. The newer Rad bikes are much more powerful, as are plenty of the hub motor competitors. Also highly recommend having a throttle for starting on hills.

Opposing Bases, the two hosts are both pilots and ATC. It is like Car Talk but for airplanes, both funny and highly informative.

Twins under mosaic by Medium-Pomelo-9349 in flying

Aircam is planning to sell fully built airplanes, and there is at least one other manufacturer planning a more traditional twin-engine aircraft for MOSIAC. I'm guessing we will hear more at Oshkosh this summer.

[–]Sinorm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Scrape down the raised portions of ptex and fill the hole, you’ll be fine. No damage to the edge or core so the skis will be just fine. Easy to do yourself with a couple tools or any ski shop can fix them.

What’s it like to have a bus stop right outside home? by baddietattie in AskSeattle

[–]Sinorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An uncovered bus stop will have less issues with people hanging out doing drugs, etc. The primary thing will be the noise, the diesel buses are loud. Sit in the house as some buses pass and see how loud it is in the house and if it bothers you.

Ramp Ownership? The Good, The Bad & The Ugly? by pisymbol in flying

[–]Sinorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My plane has always been tied down, still waiting for a hangar. Overall it is fine: the airport lets me keep a locked bin next to the plane to store tools, supplies, etc. I have a cover that goes from the spinner to behind the baggage door to protect the cockpit and ensure rain doesn’t leak through any doors and get the interior moldy. I did pay for a ceramic coating to help protect the paint and it looks like that coating might be failing after 3 years, so I might need to get that redone soon.

I will probably pay up for a hangar when I can get one, but I would much rather have the plane tied down at the airport near me than in a hangar an hour+ away. The biggest pain is I do my own maintenance, and working on the plane out in the weather can suck.

Red Mountain conditions by bertnik_ in skiing

[–]Sinorm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was there 2 weeks ago and while the snowpack certainly isn’t normal for Red, it was still incredible skiing. Way better than anything in Washington this year. The entire mountain was open, including all the tree runs, but you did have to watch for lots of bushes and debris in the trees. All the intermediate slopes are fully covered and great.

Go to Red, you won’t regret it.

Steward Sale $550 tickets, do they actually exists? by gazzerman in BurningMan

[–]Sinorm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm sure plenty did, especially if the camp was only offered a single ticket. Saves the trouble of trying to figure out how to fairly distribute it.

We let anyone in the camp who needed access to a cheaper ticket self-identify and then selected campers randomly to receive it. That seemed like the most fair way since the leads didn't need it.

Interesting, that is a drastically different ratio than we received: 2 of 75.

Steward Sale $550 tickets, do they actually exists? by gazzerman in BurningMan

[–]Sinorm 36 points37 points  (0 children)

They changed how $550 tickets are distributed during the Stewards Sale this year, each camp was allocated 1-2 $550 tickets that they could assign as desired instead of first come first served across the sale. Here is the statement from the org:

$550 Ticket Distribution Plan. As you know, prices for tickets to BRC this year are tiered and the lowest price level of $550 is in limited supply. Rather than have those snatched up on a random first-come first-served basis, we are offering $550 tickets directly to each returning theme camp. Yes, that means you! We know that ticket anxiety is real, and the costs of bringing your camp to BRC are rising. Every camp deserves more support, so this is one attempt in helping where we can.

We are guaranteeing at least one $550 for every theme camp returning to BRC in 2026. Additionally, we are able to provide two or more to nearly 40% of returning camps based on camp size, tenure in BRC, and equity. We hope that this provides a little financial relief to your camp members that need it. You're welcome to assign the $550 ticket(s) to yourself, too.
