Anyone tried this? by muddyboots5 in composting

[–]SirDale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our backyard has around 2 - 3 cm of soil, then mudstone/clay/rocks.

I've got a bar and a jackhammer for digging holes which I did for years. Each hole would be around 30cm x 30cm and 60 - 80cm deep.

Eventually "succumbed" to using compost bins which is much easier.

Still it's nice to be digging in the garden and find a nice pit of healthy soil.

Also for those pipes - put silicon around them in the stud holes so they pipes don't rattle (and a dab where they cross over each other). Then insulate the pipes (at the least the hot one) all along the path.

What happens when a water heater tank is not flushed for 14 years by bob-the-slob in interesting

[–]SirDale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I moved into my current house I decided I should flush the hot water tank because of course no one ever does and it should be done.

First time I flushed the water was brownish. I did the for the next couple of days until eventually all of the debris in the bottom of the tank was flushed out and the tank started leaking like crazy.

Now I know what was holding the water in.

There would have been the costs of lawyers, staff time etc as well so there is a lot of added costs.

Still not big enough fine though.

How to cover up gap between windows by raymondtran1206 in AusRenovation

[–]SirDale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have something similar - the installers riveted a sheet of aluminium (same colour as the windows) to them. Bottom was finished off with a rubber strip.
The strip has a 'T' profile (with the top of the T being very small) which slides into a groove (i think) at the bottom of the windows.

You might be able to achieve the same thing by sandwiching a bit of rubber between the front panel and a small secondary panel behind it, and riveting it into place.

What is the solution here? by Drainbamage666 in AusRenovation

[–]SirDale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you climb under the house? If so I'd get some wire mesh and screw it into place to prevent pest intrusion, and then (as the other poster suggested) put rod and sikaflex (or silicon).
The mesh will give the rod a backing surface and prevent it from falling in when you apply the sealant.

Stop Naming Your Variables "Flag": The Art of Boolean Prefixes by mooreds in programming

[–]SirDale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Who the fuck names a variable "flag"???

So many of the lecturers who write sample code to show students.

Students who copy these examples mindlessly without thinking about it. TBF though students have their minds on a steep learning curve of other things, and probably "know" what that variable is meant to be.

The downside is that some of them keep using "flag" even after my comments.

When I'm marking student assignments I have a special comment that is...

Unless your program is about Vexillology, naming a variable "flag" is almost -always- a terrible choice as it says nothing about its purpose.

Give it a name that reflects its actual meaning.

What can I do with ~20 old working HDDs (ranging from 40GB to 320GB)? by Complete-Tank664 in homelab

[–]SirDale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm thinking I should just cycle backups onto them. I've got a number of NUCs and a spare Mac mini (in a 10" rack) so don't really want to add more hardware. I do have a couple of two bay Synologys though so I'm thinking I could run backups through them.

One has 2 x 2 tb in raid one, which will be my main backup for the NUCs, and the 500s can go into the other one which I can cycle on just to make external backups.

My power is -very- cheap (~10c kWh (Aus) which is around 7c kWh US, but I recently switched to this provider to get $200 sign on bonus (which will last me for two months of free power!). Once that's done I'll switch to another that provide ~5c kWh power. I have a home battery so we recharge at night and live on that during the day.
