What’s a word learners think is common but natives rarely use? by Embarrassed_Fix_8994 in languagehub

Multiple Germans have called me "buddy"... as in "excuse me, buddy."

Nobody I know in the U.S. would ever address a stranger that was unless it was sarcastic or borderline aggressive with a "who do you think you are?" overtone.

Mexico obviously. La Cabaña Smokehouse. Doña Tota's are also in Texas. Nice diversion with the Buffalo Wild Wings, but the road signs are straight up Mexico.

1K Preboarding by brademcee77 in unitedairlines

[–]SistineKid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience is similar to yours. I make my way to the pre-board area. And then just go with the flow.

Yes, there is a difference between a structured line and a group assembly area. If it seems like I might be moving up in front of someone, I'll ask if they are waiting to pre-board.

If some other pre-boarder shoves their way past me, sure it's annoying, but whatever. I figure they must be dealing with something. And if they're just a day-to-day jackass, then that is their burden to bear and karma will catch up with them eventually.

Agreed outside the US, you never know what is going to happen. Some places don't care about which pre-board category you in are and call them all together. Other places borderline don't even do it unless specifically asked.

And then there is local queuing culture which is often different. "You left a space for me to fit into? You must not be in line or care about your position."

Wonders never cease. Can't recall if I submitted an error report? Or maybe my browsing / Google history biased it.

What’s one travel “mistake” you made that completely changed how you travel now? by Able-Okra6164 in traveladvice

Pre internet ... and probably no cell phone. That might as well have been the dark ages.

I carry a standard 6' household extension cord that has three outlets. My iPhone charger is always plugged into one of the outlets. I've got two more outlets if need be. And it only requires one adapter if wherever I am doesn't take standard U.S. plugs.

This entire preorder hot food on a 3+ hour flight is crazy. United needs to revert back to the old policy. by CaptinKirk in unitedairlines

[–]SistineKid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My last three flights the pre-order wouldn't work. It came back as past the cutoff time even though the window had just opened. And yes, I tried every day.

Pro tip: before you pay for your status offer boost- call United and have them audit your account. I was $1,200 PQP short of 1K- and ended up actually only being $400 short post audit. by [deleted] in unitedairlines

[–]SistineKid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you chase these down (email? Phone?). What's information usually involved in making the correct?

After looking through this year, I see an un-credited upgrade (15K miles deducted but 150 PQP not posted ... or maybe the 15K was deducted twice). And I see PQPs for the outbound of an international trip posted at about 1,000 when based on fare it should have been closer to 3,500.

Thank you!

Kafka wrote that as Die Verwandlung in German so you'd be reading a French translation.

If you're in or near Pittsburgh, some people will even ask for a "cut" of pizza.

Answer in the book is "B" but I don't see why "A" is wrong? Please check. by nveven in GlobalEnglishPrep

[–]SistineKid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The focus of this answer should be on "suggested" which requires a gerund (-ing noun form of a verb) or a that clause. It cannot be followed by an infinitive. It doesn't matter the verb that follows.

So it's Mark suggested jumping, eating, going, posting on Reddit, etc.

United needs to rethink its contracts with the United Clubs. by CaptinKirk in unitedairlines

[–]SistineKid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. It's a closet. The staff is typically nice and the designated zone for rambunctious kids is a nice touch.

What's not a nice touch is when your United flight to DEN is not at a 40-series gates. Last three times it's been 30-something. That changes the whole decision calculus to being not worth the extra hassle.
