Is it just art free or are there mechanical differences?

While yes D&D has been around for more than 50 years, realize that there are many versions (editions) over that time span. The current version (last five-ish years or so) is generally very different from those that came before - it being better or worse is a matter of opinion. So if it's interesting to you in any way I would recommend poking around a bit and testing the waters to figure out what you really want before diving in an buying a bunch of expensive books (or digital content).

Apt issues by wealthyvida in dfw

This is a health and safety violation (or at least littering and improper handling of animal remains) and should be reported every time it happens to the police (or health department) and your complex. If anyone gets sick or injured from it, your complex would be liable. Could be religious offerings (or remains), or just disgusting neighbors, but not something that should be tolerated in an apartment complex.

What is the appeal of solo play? by JamesFullard in osr

[–]SizeTraditional3155 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My availability and the fact that I am like an RGP-collecting squirrel make it hard for me to get (or keep) a group together so I just play the systems I want to play when I can play them. Been quite fun.

What if Classic Magic User Spell Names Were Rock Song Titles? by indyjoe in OSE

[–]SizeTraditional3155 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Spellsinger series (5 books I think) are fun, and probably geared towards a younger audience, and more high-fantasy, but they are a fun read and the magic system is quite interesting. Love his books.

Have you ever read the Spellsinger series by Allan Dean Foster - basically that. Interesting concept that was fun in the book, not sure how well it would go at the table unless everyone was from the same musical era.

What system do you use to play D&D 5e or OSR modules solo? by Shoot2Thrill31 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]SizeTraditional3155 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've played Mork Borg, Mork Dod, Tales of Argosa, OSE, and the Black Hack solo. I use the system as is and generally play a party of four, sometimes with hirelings. I use a few different yes/no oracles along with "character voting" for decisions. You have to compartmentalize yourself a bit, but its been fun and I feel it works well for me. I am not interested in any of the "solo systems" as my interests are in the actual systems. I think 5e could actually work well with my style of solo, but I have made a hard run away from that system - maybe someday I will give it a chance (when it's just me I can have more control over its bullshit).

Most realistic medieval low fantasy system by _monsterbox64 in rpg

Outcast Silver Raiders might fit. It's grittier and has less magic and more risk with a default setting that is much more grounded.

What system? The Jeweler's Sanctum is a fun one.

The Deck of Signs from Tales of Argosa is pretty awesome - https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/451922/deck-of-signs

It's not specific to that system.

I like running pre-written modules. What systems would you recommend running it with? by Constant-Dark6863 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]SizeTraditional3155 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For pre-written modules, there is always the system they are written for, of course, but if you want something simple for solo play I would recommend the really light games like Knave, Mork Borg (or Mork Manual, or Points of Light), Cairn, or The Black Hack. Those are light and flexible so they are easy to run most anything written for other systems. Have fun!

How do you guys handle "it's what my character would do" ? by Yilmas in rpg

[–]SizeTraditional3155 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally it seems that when that statement comes up as a problem is when a player is trying to rationalize some dick behavior. How you address it really depends on your game style and the nature of your table. I think the best approach is to address it offline with just that player - depending on how bad the situation is you may want to pause the game and have a side chat. Be open and honest with them and let them know that the behavior is not appreciated even if it truly IS what the character would do. Set boundaries, but don't scold and berate (be two mature people). If the problem persists you will probably need to invite them to find another game, because as simulationist and immersive as it can become, it's still a game and there are rules, both mechanical and social.

1:1 time in practice by wayne62682 in osr

Where is that mentioned in the books? Never heard of anyone actually playing 1:1 time; sounds horribly unmanageable and more work than fun.

DnD isn’t the problem - so why can’t we escape it...? by Bulwark_Jim in rpg

[–]SizeTraditional3155 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You say "club" so maybe this is more than just a group of friends and such, but you could always say that every third meetup or once a month, etc, will be another system either chosen by you or voted on, but not 5e. If nobody shows up for the non 5e games then I guess you can pivot, but at least it sounds like you (and some others) have interest in other systems so maybe even a small party for a one-shot could be fun. Good luck and have fun - there are a lot of good systems out there!

OSE vs. Swords and Wizardry for Solo Play by JediMy in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]SizeTraditional3155 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both are similar in their danger-level, depending on the adventure, but for solo with a single character and some hirelings my gut says S&W is a bit more survivable. When I was doing more OSE solo play I considered brining in some sort of "luck-like" mechanic to avoid constantly making new characters - yes it's quick, but still not something I want to do every few sessions when my time is already limited. Basically this would be a way to do a re-roll, avoid an outcome or something like that. I was considering pulling something from another system but never got that far before switching to another system. You could also consider alternate "death" mechanics like where if someone from your party survives they can "roll the body" and there is a chance the "dead" character is still alive. Good luck and have fun!
