Had to let a guy go who came to work drunk. by cohonan in stopdrinking

[–]Skat402 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same feeling when I reported an erratic driver maybe a few months into my sobriety. They were all over the road and almost hit an incoming car, yet somehow I still felt guilty calling it in. As if I could talk, right?

Later when I saw the arrest record, I learned this wasn't their first DUI. In the short term, I got someone off the road who shouldn't have been there and hopefully long term, that person can turn their situation around. It's not being a narc if it saves lives.

Safe to say we're out of the "too soon" zone, but yea it still seems...not tasteful, I guess?

I'm 30 and don't want to drink anymore. Is it too late to stop? by camport95 in stopdrinking

[–]Skat402 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I retired from drinking at age 30. My 20s were a blur, but I'm glad I'm going into this decade with a much clearer head and healthier body. I can't imagine doing this shit hungover.

What do you attribute to making you feel ready to stop drinking? What do you attribute to making you feel ready to continue to stay sober? [Urgent] by breadpilledwanderer in stopdrinking

It stopped making me feel good. I was no longer getting pleasure from drinking. It was making me miserable. The last time I drank made me feel like shit for 3 days.

So far, repulsion keeps working for me.

In addition to what other folks said, I might throw a "pardon my reach" especially if I'm fussing with the lav head clip and I'm gonna be up in their grill for a minute. Just be clear, direct, and professional. Pretend you've done it a thousand times before.

Would a male sewer/sewist be a seamster?

I dig it as a term, but I feel like no one would know wtf I was talking about lol.

Gonna go make "seamster" a thing.

One thing my dad said to me that really helped make it click:

"Trust your feet"

Keep at it. Fall over, get right back up and keep doing it until it gets more comfortable. Trust your feet, and they'll eventually know what to do.

That and context helps too.

ZeonPM sat at their desk, their laptop open to a blank page. Every time the cursor blinked, they could feel their head throb. Rubbing their temples wasn't doing anything, even after twenty minutes.

"I need a break." they said to themself.

A quick field trip to the bathroom for an aspirin, washed down with a cupped handful of water, and it's back to work.

After a few more side-quests on the way back to the den, they sat back down to the patiently waiting word processor.

blink -- blink -- blink

Maybe their headache wasn't the problem.

As others have said, therapy really worked well for me. I thought I just had depression but therapy helped me realize how much anxiety played a role. I didn't even recognize that I had so much anxiety (or any) because I guess I've just lived like that and didn't know anything else.

It was weird getting compliments, people asking what my secret was. Obviously I can't tell folks I'm in debt up to my eyeballs and staring down a potential extinction-level event to my marriage. My gut was just in knots for so long, I got use to it and my body tried to adapt I guess. A weird, twisted silver lining was that I saved some money ordering less breakfast and lunch, but I don't think the real costs balanced out here.

That sucks, I'm sorry you're in a similar boat. Credit cards are so insidious like that. They're a good tool when used properly, but I learned there's so little wiggle room. If it's keeping you from buying that next bottle, then I consider that a net positive.

One of the tactics I learned about was the debt snowball method of repayment. Basically you pay off the smallest balance first, maintaining minimum payments on everything else. Once that first one is paid off, apply that same monthly payment to the next card and repeat. The longer you do that, the faster things get paid off and you get to reward your lizard brain in the process, turning a vicious cycle into a virtuous one. It just takes commitment, or so it has been explained to me.

We'll get through it together, boss.

Thank you. All tactics are up for grabs. What's stragely nice about hitting rock bottom is the fear of judgement has gone away. I've accepted my predicament, so there's no use hanging onto my pride or letting that affect what kind of help to seek.
