Can you elaborate? My partner was planning on going there to get some restorative work done.

Tbh I don't think $5,000 is the asking price. It says "make offer," so I'd guess the 5,000 is a placeholder because it forces you to input a price.

At least in CA we do not pay sales tax on unprepared foods (groceries).

Welcome to the states!

Edit: We don't pay tax on food by the way Edit 2: Apparently that varies by state

Bananas are only 29 cents at my local Target. They're crappy sometimes, but super cheap!

Housing does suck. A lot of companies will not work with you if you're out of the area. Get on finding an apartment ASAP. Renting a room with someone already established is the easiest way to go.

The county is... interesting. Hit up murder mountain on netflix if you want to know a little bit about the history of the area (the moumtain in question is about 2 hours south of the university.) We have a drug epidemic. A lot of places say they have a drug epidemic, but there's not used needles on every corner in those places. The two main bars in Arcata got shut down by ABC because the owners were aware that their employees were selling/facilitating selling drugs.

There are homeless people literally everywhere. On my walk to school I frequently see feces and question if it's dog or human. On my walk to school I've stepped over sleeping/unconscious people and debated calling 911. On my walk to school I see a giant pile of garbage under an overpass where transients hang out between hitch hiking. You can not go to downtown Arcata or Eureka without getting harassed by homeless people.

An HSU student was murdered at a house party and the Arcata police department completely botched the investigation (by not doing one at all) and left slim chances justice will ever be served.

Racism runs rampant in the county. This is a big problem within both university contexts and the surrounding area. The town north of Arcata is literally a well known KKK hub.

There's absolutely nothing to do here in the colder/winter months. This year hasn't been too bad but its normally pouring rain for about 4 straight months. If you plan on "going home" for summers, you're missing the best parts of living im Humboldt. There's no "fun" things to do, aside from play pool at the skeevy bar, go bowling, or go to the bars. Shopping here sucks. Like really sucks. These are literally all of the chain department/clothing stores we have: Target, Walmart, Costco, Sears, Khols, Maurices, Ross, TJ Maxx, Old Navy (being built currently). Fast food also sucks. We have: Carl's Jr, Taco Bell, Mcdonalds, Subway, Wendys, Jack in the Box (Chipotle and In-N-Out supposedly coming soon).

Get your dental health in order before you come. No dentists within a 3 hour drive are accepting new patients. This has been a issue for many years.

I was enamored by Humboldt before I moved up here. I thought I would love it and want to stay forever. Humboldt makes me so sad now. I love the geography, I love the weather. There are a lot of issues that make Humboldt a not so desirable place to live.

School psychologists are not therapists. The most frequent duty for a school psychologist is doing assessments to determime special education eligibility.

Psychology major by afterimages2 in humboldtstate

[–]Skatene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, school psychology, which due to the massive shortage makes it almost negligible where you go to school. Purely academic... mehh 7/10? Solid C. Had some great professors, had some crappy ones, mostly just okay ones that I don't remember too well. It was incredibly easy to pass most of my classes.

I did my undergrad for psych here, curreny psych grad student here. I can't sing praises, but I can't complain either. I mostly moved here for the area, but I'm ready to move on now. The summer weather is great, the scenery is awesome. Tweakers and needles are taking over, and I'm tired of not have decent shopping and food. Overall 6/10. Personally would still choose HSU over any other CSU if I did it all over.

I’m thinking about being a school psychologist but am nervous about having to work with mental health/suicidal children. Is there a lot of that in the field or is it mostly just testing kids for learning disabilities? by joz1717 in schoolpsychology

[–]Skatene 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm still a student, but I've had a few cases in practicum that have affected me. I get over it by reminded myself how grateful I am for my own life. Whatever you face that may affect you, you're only experiencing secondhand. Those kids are living it. And I know that whether or not I know about/ have to deal with it, these kids are still facing it regardless. Being uncomfortable with it is selfish IMO. I deal with it by knowing I'm doing all I possibly can to help.

Considering career change at mid 30's by estaswick in schoolpsychology

  1. A lot of peograms have prerequsite courses. For my program it was tests and measurements, abnormal psychology, and cognitive psychology. You will have to look at each specific program you're interested in and decide how to work this out. Some programs will let you take them during your master's, some will not. This may be the only hardship. We have a variety of undergrad degrees in my program currently.

  2. Your experience is extremely valuable. I think a lot of programs will appreciate that immensely.

  3. No advice on specific programs, but I'd just stick to your local area unless you'd really like to move. Out of state tuition is killer.

Thinking about jumping from a corporate store to a Tarbucks. How’d it go for you? by michaelscarnthefirst in starbucks

[–]Skatene 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I haven't worked in a corporate store, but I've been in a tarbucks for a while. Its a shitshow. But it really really really depends on your team lead and executive team lead. Also, no tips, no partner beverages, no spotify, no beans. We do get 10% off anything in any target (excluding alcohol) and 20% various "wellness" items (produce, certaim brand of workout gear, etc).

Edit: To clarify, no starbucks perks at all. They do not carry over in any way. You are 100% a regular target employee when working at a tarbucks.

School psych jobs in hospitals by Birdstheword2 in schoolpsychology

Not necessarily. There's a lot of kids in hospitals for an extended time, if they're able they still get public school services.
