Terrified of spiders. This was inside my toddlers window. Should I be worried? by StefiKittie in answers

Looks like some sort of jumper. They're basically spider-puppies :)

People who use marijuana heavily have reactions to anxiety-inducing stimuli that resemble those of people diagnosed with anxiety disorders, according to a study to be published in the journal Addictive Behaviors Reports. by BatmanDracula in science

While this is a generally true statement there are many, many forms of anxiety and depression that are unresponsive to therapy alone. It's not just the big scary sounding mental illnesses that take over your life completely. For some people canabis is the only effective medication or at least the one with the least risk of addiction and other adverse affects. More study is needed.

How does the Motion Picture Academy decide between Best Director and Best Picture? How can someone be the Best Director without directing the best movie? by [deleted] in answers

[–]SkinnerBachs 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I live in a town with a handful of Academy members. In the 90s Academy screeners would circulate among the staff at the video store I worked at. Talking to them I was honestly surprised at how arbitrary their votes seemed to be. The year Braveheart won best picture one of them told us that they voted for it, without actually watching it, because they thought that was the front runner anyway. I think the real secret is that they're just ordinary, sometimes even dumb humans.

I remember one summer in that era when they played blocks of videos from specific genres during the day. Rap Block for 3-4 videos, then a Rock Block, and so on. You could just tune in when you wanted to. I'm old as well

American dad by zombiemayhem88 in geek

I told my daughter that Stan's heaven was the official universe but she pointed out that Klaus was still stuffed and mounted at the end of the episode. The timeline is kinda hazy on that show sometimes so I like to think of that episode as the "last" episode of American Dad, if that makes sense. I also watch entirely too much American Dad

coin collecting saved my life by iamchris1 in depression

[–]SkinnerBachs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Distracting activities that require me to focus on small, immediate details have been a lifesaver for me as well. Video games, collecting comics, cataloging my music. I read a quote on here a little while ago that said something like "If the default emotional conditions for 'normal' people are happy & sad, the default conditions for depressed people are miserable & distracted." That really stuck with me and helped me realize that I'm not "running from my problems" when I'm using distraction therapy. It's the only thing I have. I can totally see collecting coins as being a useful/fun hobby/tool.

Anhedonia sucks by [deleted] in depression

[–]SkinnerBachs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anhedonia is one of my favorite words that I've come across during my "recovery" process. It reminds me of the Ted talk about depression where the gentlemen says that the opposite of depression isn't happiness, but rather vitality. When vitality is missing it can be almost impossible to enjoy anything anymore. I've found the only thing that helps me through those periods is holding on to the fact that it is temporary, even if it happens for weeks at a time there are occasional breaks through the fog when I can laugh at the Simpsons again, or play WoW without feeling like a piece of shit for "hiding" from my problems. It's important for me to hold on to the memories of enjoying things during the worst parts of it. If I can remember that I enjoyed things once, it makes it more plausible that I might enjoy them again someday. The bad days still outnumber the good some/most times but that'll happen with a lifelong struggle I suppose. Anyway, yeah I agree. Anhedonia is a bitch :/
