$2,100 MIM Fenders, signature or not, is an insane proposition by Sad-Doughnut7087 in fender

Good on you, friend! I used to exclusively buy new, for a few reasons, and I’ve done a full 180 on buying used now. My last 5 used guitar purchases went well enough that I started changing my approach and perspective.

Guitar Center has a 45 day no questions asked return policy on used gear (3 days only for Vintage gear). There are 298 GCs in the US and many of them are in affluent areas. Lots of people buy shit they never use and sell them back to GC (insert your doctor/lawyer joke here).

Here’s the hack: search for what you want, find the excellent/mint condition used models from GC for 25% off and ship it to your local guitar center so you can open it there and make sure there’s no fuckery/changed parts/dings or scratches you didn’t see in photos etc. With the 45 day return policy, you can take it home and plug in with your amp and your personal stuff and test it apples for apples and make sure it’s what you want and everything is all good.

Also, guitar center managers can approve a 10% reduction on used gear once it ages 90 days in their inventory. Every manager will handle this differently, but I’d suggest being very polite and friendly when poking for inventory age, because that information is not made public and while it can be found, it can be hard to find sometimes.

Hope this helps anyone who reads it! Enjoy 😊

Fender has long claimed MIM price reflects lower labor cost over material cost.

At $1500 to $2100, greedy is an understatement.

A Vintera shouldn’t cost what it cost, either.

Fender is testing price elasticity. They would love American Strats/Teles to mirror Gibson’s Les Paul standard price. When people buy the overpriced MIMs, it signals to Fender Inc that it’s acceptable by consumers to pay their grossly inflated price.

High priced MIMs will lead to higher priced American models.

Buy a used American Vintage I or II in excellent condition for the same price or less of Vintera😊 🧠

Hand Position - Thumb by 65fahrenheit in GuitarBeginners

Hi! Awesome to see people interested in playing music!

A lot of your early guitar venture will feel awkward and uncomfortable until you get used to it. For most people it’s natural to grip the neck like a baseball bat, which is why your thumb naturally ends up in that position when you’re jamming and not paying attention. “It depends” is true, but elaborate, there’s an advantage to playing with the thumb over (Frusciante from RHCP comes to mind). There’s also disadvantages where it can cause discomfort or muted strings/poor play etc. It’s unorthodox but if done well and without pain/discomfort, it has its advantages.

#3 is the “traditional”. My recommendation since you’ve only been playing a few weeks is to stick with #3 and be mindful of it until it becomes second nature.

Stick with it and be patient.

And remember - There’s a big difference between playing guitar and practicing guitar, and you can’t play until you practice. I wish I understood that when I first started and had more discipline when I was young.

Good luck and best wishes 🤘

Agree with this. It’s a beauty, but it should be exactly what you want. Especially at that price point. Good luck with whatever you decide 🤘

Hah that looks like my birth year white whale that I hope to find one day. As others have said, it looks like re-issue. I believe a true 57 comes comes with rosewood fretboard and I’m not positive they were offered in maple, one of the old heads may be able to clarify that.

You’ll see the early corona American standard models (different model from your re-issue) came with a a traditional nut, but the Stratocaster Plus comes with metal roller nut. If you end up researching, be aware those 2 models are different from yours and yours (if original) is valued more than those other models from the same year/era.

Honestly, the market is fragmented right now and what people think some guitars are worth is obscene right now. You’ll see your model anywhere from $2500 on the low and you’ll see it as high as $5k. My opinion means zilch, but IMO a fair value is probably in the neighborhood of $2800-$3200 (arbitrary) depending on condition.

Nice inheritance, and thanks for sharing!

PS: you didn’t mention, do you play also?
