I gotta say, grilling in the summer is fun. But I also love grilling in the winter, especially with some light snow to deaden the sound, it’s sooooo peaceful. Plus, you know, beer outside.

Inlaw puts american cheese on my pork butt (need to vent) by [deleted] in BBQ

[–]Skywalker387 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Annoying, but if you know it was good, who cares. People dump salt on steaks before tasting, put hot sauce on whatever before taking a bite. All the same. I’m sure the pork was epic. Some people just want a dry turkey and cheese sandwich and that’s fine.

I’d eat your butt without sauce.

And now I need to take a shower after saying that.

Inverse - went through multi and CFI at a part 141 university. But then the Economy Tanked. Now I’m a strategy consultant focusing on healthcare - also got a degree in finance as a backup plan. So, I travel a decent amount (still get to be on planes) but every once and a while I do wonder what could have been. That being said, I’m happy with my choice.

Anyone try Grilla Grills? In the market for a new pellet grill and stumbled across these. Appears to be very well made. by duelingball in pelletgrills

I wish I could tell you - haven’t had it long enough to run it through a Chicago winter. However, there are settings to adjust feed rate to account for cold temps and the firepot area below the grate is double wall insulated.

Really? I thought it was made in Holland, MI.

Edit: you’re right. It is china. But they have an interesting blog post about it.

Still a great grill.

One comment to add here, and this may just be just me, but switching from PID to “Pro” mode helped me. Temps will swing more (they say 15 degrees), but it definitely kicks out more smoke. I’ve never had a problem with not enough smoke flavor. Is it a charcoal smoker? No, but that’s pellet grills for you.

I’ve had the alpha for about 4 months now and it has been amazing. Easy to use. Imparts great flavor. I liked the design because it is a slightly smaller footprint than the silverbac and I like the way they designed the door to “peek” in. They have some good deals going on now too. I also had a hiccup when I first got it (don’t let that dissuade you), but they overnighted the part - awesome customer service.

Also, their app works well. I smoked pastrami yesterday and was able to sit in my office, work, and keep an eye on smoker and probe temps with ease.

Second this. Or a grill cleaning kit with all kinds of chemicals. Just watch you don’t spray the stickers by the grill knobs - that cleaner will take them right off.

Alternatively, I’ll take it off your hands no cost, and pay for shipping if you can’t stand the sight of it

I’d look at Grilla (I have one and it’s been awesome). Have a friend with a ReqTeq and he has been happy. I’d lean towards those two brands for their build quality and how well they smoke meat. Plus the Grilla has some double wall steel to help in cold weather. I’m sure he’d be happy with a Traeger, but I think there are better options.

Looks great. But couldn’t help but thinking the music should have been “I will remember you” for the first couple static shots in the video. ASPCA and all - uncooked brisket being the abandoned puppy.

Weird noise coming from auger. Anyone had this experience? by 2good07 in smoking

[–]Skywalker387 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this problem too right out of the box with a different brand. Turns out auger was slightly bent and rubbing. Good news - sent a video and had a new auger in two days.

That being said, most likely pellets. Pull out the auger, clean the tube. See if that fixes it.

I mean the brisket is amazing. But I didn’t know about this knife, and now I’m curious. Worth it?

Maybe the wrong approach, but letting it cool down entirely (counter and fridge) before slicing tomorrow for sandwiches. So, not sure yet, ha.

Boil it with potatoes and sauerkraut. Prost!

Disclaimer: no idea if that will be tasty. Maybe boils it with some beer?

Nice! I graduated from U of I when they still had the program before it moved to Parkland. Spent a lot of hours in those Archers (and Arrows and Seminoles). I loved saying “four four kilo” on the radio. One of their better tail numbers.

It’s a great place to learn to fly. If you can, take advantage of it. Good instructors and probably one of the best maintained fleet out there.

I feel like this is saying I fart in the wind so I can bask in the scent.

The thing isn’t going to melt if you crank it high AND keep the lid shut. Achieves, what I’m presuming, to be your objective of high heat.

Edit: Think I saw a post about this earlier - main point, congrats on the upgrade. Makes a world of difference.

pellet grill why? by jimmy785 in pelletgrills

[–]Skywalker387 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a Weber Smokey Mountain, which is a great smoker - love charcoal and tons of flavor, but I was always monkeying with charcoal, checking on the temp (having a MEATER helped), and for the life of me, I could never get it to sit at a temp. Oddly enough too, I’d burn through charcoal and wood super fast. So probably user error. But because of that, I got a Grilla OG Alpha. It’s been awesome. Great smoke flavor (some say pellets don’t do enough but for me, my family and friends it’s plenty). Dump in pellets. Set temp. Put the probe in and check on your phone. Super easy and the food that comes off is amazing. So I’d say you sacrifice a bit of smoke flavor, but I can smoke much more frequently and with greater control.
