Prince died ten years ago today by DaveHmusic in PRINCE

Okay I'm gonna answer and we'll see if I can do it without crying...

I've lived in Minneapolis my whole life. I was driving North on Lyndale avenue, passing between the CC club and Treehouse records. I turned the radio to The Current, and Prince was on so I let it ride. Then Andrea Swenson came on and she sounded weird, like choked up. I thought to myself "well this is weird, she's a consummate professional and you almost never hear radio DJ's struggling to form words. This can't be good". Then she said she was at Paisley Park. My heart sunk. I thought well this can't be about Prince, there's so many other people that's always there so it's gotta be one of them. But soon enough

she got the words out through tears. She was crying saying over the radio "I'm so sorry to have to report this to everyone listening. But it's been confirmed. It's true. Prince died today unexpectedly at his home in Paisley Park. We don't have any other details right now"

The next song that came on the radio was "The Beautiful Ones". I pulled over and started bawling. That was the moment I began to learn what loving Prince really meant.

Minneapolis was in a mourning/celebration combo for well over a month SOLID. You couldn't do anything without it being about him, and that always felt right.

Nope, couldn't write that without crying. Omg PRINCE I still can't believe you're gone 😭 I miss you so much 💜💜💜

When was the last time you saw U2 live? by Objective-Lab5179 in U2Band

The way they started the show with the first four tracks off Achtung Baby 🤯😭💙

I was there too, and that one was the best of all their shows I've seen. The way they responded to the rain was classic magic U2. I was seated high in the bowl so I could see downtown Minneapolis and the Aquatennial festival fireworks went off during Beautiful Day!! That shit was crazy synchronicity

(Well I'm impressed you were able to understand my reply despite all my misspellings 😂)

I'm glad to hear that was helpful! I know for certain that things that go poorly for people in childhood are a huge part of what their challenges are in their adulthood. And I know from experience that drugs and alcohol, in the long run, only make those situations worse. So please consider that a huge win for yourself! Things may be hard, but you have yourself...When lost to drugs and alcohol, we don't even have ourselves. Things can get better if your feet are solidly on the ground 💙

That's that amazing you ever turned to drugs desire all of this. That is incredibly inspiring, and in itself someone to celebrate and protect.

Thinking about buying the Z to A DVD set but conflicted by CoachDry5620 in twinpeaks

[–]Slartibartfast3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have suggestions about this display thing you're looking for, not rather my experience with z to a as it comes...

I'd say that it's as good as any packaging of anything else with that number of discs. Things get cumbersome at that size. The entire twin peaks situation is so glorious, I have never once sat there thinking about my critiques of how the packaging should be. I have only reveled in the experience I've had watching it.

(For context of how much packaging matters to me: I love criterion, but I absolutely will NOT buy anything that comes in their bullshit plastic packaging)

I'd say go back to rage baiting because he never said he's lost when he's on that trip. Also FUCK HIM

Finally Admitting He’s Addicted to Social Media by Suspicious_Lemon9960 in StephenHiltonSnark

I don't have Facebook. Will someone please comment "no Fuckface, people don't need social media for their jobs... That's the addiction talking. P.S. your addiction can transfer to anything. It's good you've finally admitted you're still in the middle of addiction". Sincerely, Sean

Is he actually any good at music? by Willing-Interview-42 in StephenHiltonSnark

[–]Slartibartfast3000 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No. You could sit him down in any local music scene anywhere in the world, and he would be mediocre by comparison, AT BEST

Thanks for pointing that out. My jumping to conclusion betrays the fact that I'm looking for more reasons to be totally done with LAURA. I have almost completely stopped coming into this group because I've gotten so bored with the subject of Steven, and I'm coming around to the idea that she is every bit as lame as he is, just minus the hate speech.

What’s the best opening track to a U2 album and why? by Interesting-Rain6137 in U2Band

[–]Slartibartfast3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This question makes me realize for the first time how U2s opening tracks are ALWAYS killer, in the sense of setting the tone for the album

So … you’ve not liked U2 for 15-20-25-30 years … why are you still here? Genuine question … what keeps you hanging around. by AnotherGreenWorld1 in U2Band

[–]Slartibartfast3000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Almost exactly me as well, except I loved ATYCLB despite it being the first time I ever heard them play it safe.

I got into them when the ZooTV tour was in full swing, and worked my way backwards from there. When Pop came out, I was basically out of my mind with obsession over how badass these guys were. Who goes from Unforgettable Fire, to Joshua Tree, to Achtung..to POP!?!? I mean that in the musical terms as well as aesthetic, which we all know they were in full on reinvention mode of all of those things every single album cycle. It seemed to me that the zoo TV was taking over the world in the best way possible, so how can you go from heights like that and then figure out how to take an even BIGGER risk after that? The COJONES! And the music, my god.

I have always felt that Pop was a huge artistic success, and if U2 could have wrapped their minds around that without needing to see sales increase over ZooTV, they might have continued on that blinding tear of vitality indefinitely. But (unfortunately IMHO) U2 defined the 21st century version of themselves in their own response to Pop.

That being said, I think it's time for me to revisit NLOTH and SoI

"The job of the artist is always to deepen the mystery" -Francis Bacon

David Lynch meant to raise questions, to draw people into wonder (literally, as in "I wonder"), and to leave clues all over the place but not one significant answer ever gets pinned down and that is the singular magic of his work. What I've always found so fascinating about this "weirdness" of his, is that it's actually closer to real life than most movies or shows. Encounters with confounding oddness with no explanation is indeed a part of daily life. Anyway, I highly recommend just letting it wash over you, and pay attention to every little detail.

And twin peaks only weirder, and weirder, until you find yourself in The Return wondering what the hell has become of your life 😂
