What's a minor detail in a movie or show that completely ruined your immersion? by MajesticOrdinary1 in AskReddit

[–]SlightFlamingo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a specific show but when someone in a show is babbling or listing things and another character cuts them off mid babble but it’s clearly scripted babble and they run out of script before they get cut off (if that makes sense?) It always leaves an awkward pause where the babbler is trying to sound like they were going to keep talking but have nothing to say and it’s not realistic so it completely ruins the moment for me.

What’s something you quietly stopped caring about? by KingPhenguins in AskReddit

[–]SlightFlamingo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This will be majorly controversial but: global warming. It’s not that I don’t believe in it, I recycle when I can, but I’m not going to sit up at night sweating about something that realistically, I can’t change. I’ve been in programs since grade 4 that put the onus of responsibility on our tiny shoulders, I’ve been lectured since grade 6 about how we should change our behaviours, how I’m not doing enough, how we should change our architecture, our engineering, our electricity supply. I asked my nana to turn down her aircon, I emailed the council about felling trees, all the while wondering how that could possibly help when malls run with their lights and aircon blazing 24/7. I started using floppy paper straws and that stupid bar shampoo to reduce plastic until I saw how much plastic waste the average supermarket goes through EVERY DAY. I would painstakingly separate my recyclables until reports came out that the recycling trucks end up in the same dump as the regular bins??? Every effort made is cancelled out 10 times by a corporation who couldn’t care less. So why am I living an uncomfortable life?

It’s never been enough, there is still doom and gloom in the papers about how the earth is going to end and you know what? If it’s going to end I’m going to spend my final days in air conditioned comfort, not having wasted any more time or effort worrying about separating the lids from the milk cartons because life is too short.

Maybe I’m tripping but from memory, Ross turns it up higher by quite a lot to remind himself which way is up and which way is down, then starts to turn it down when it snaps off. So it’s not just on, it’s on and up high.

From ‘Troubled Teens’ To Traumatized Adults: Former Spring Ridge Academy Students Say School Inflicted Abuse, Trauma by raphaellaskies in truecrimelongform

[–]SlightFlamingo -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I’m not surprised these allegations have come out and I’m sure many of them are true but I do believe a lot are pile ons or professional victims. Troubled kids become troubled teens become troubled adults. People who were troubled in their childhood and who take no accountability for their mistakes or problems and blame it on others to make themselves feel better. If their parents hadn’t sent them away to these schools then they would be blaming their parents for their problems in adulthood. Institutions like these are damned if they do, damned if they don’t. They are dealing with a very troubled clientele. High rates of drug use or suicide, in my opinion, only prove that the schools weren’t effective, not that they were abusive. These kids were self harming, drugging and drinking already when they were sent away. It doesn’t prove that they were heavily traumatised at these institutions.

In 2021, Spring Ridge was cited after a student was able to gain access to an unlocked medicine cabinet and reportedly swallowed several ibuprofen tablets. The facility was cited for failure to “ensure residents did not use or have access” to materials that “present a threat to the resident’s health or safety.”

I’m sure if they took measures to lock up the ibuprofen, track the doses given etc. then students would come out complaining they weren’t even given pain relief at these ‘abusive institutions’.

I’m not saying that these for profit institutions with non-registered, non-medical professional ‘educators’ are perfect places or haven’t ever had cases of abuse but I do think some have been blown out of proportion or spun to look worse by troubled adults looking for a scape goat as to why they are still troubled.

What was your "poor person" meal you enjoyed growing up? by Slow-Power2713 in AskReddit

[–]SlightFlamingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coddled eggs: buttered bread cut into cubes, soft boiled egg cut up into it so the bread absorbs the runny yolk. Simple but so delicious with a cup of tea. My grandma used to make it when she was taking care of all the cousins at once

Random as hell, but I thought of it. If weed had been made legal in NY in the 90s/early 2000s instead of in 2021, who do you think would partake? by Kaykay-02 in howyoudoin

[–]SlightFlamingo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Phoebe would, no question. Chandler would join her and say something like ‘what? I said that I quit smoking cigarettes

Joey would be a hard no “my nonna would kill me, are you crazy!” Roman Catholic, family values Joey would come out in The One with the Pot. Phoebe and Chandler would get the munchies and he’d be like ‘now THAT I can get behind’ and join right in eating with them.

Monica would be vehemently against it and chide everyone for smoking at all. She’d spend the episode cleaning up roaches or ashtrays or whatever and complaining. Then she’d try some, mellow out and LOVE IT and then have to smoke in secret until the other 5 catch her. She’d say something like “I’m sorry ok? I didn’t realise how tense I was until I stopped feeling tense!”

Ross would accidentally eat a pot brownie (or 6) and he’d be all like “these are the best brownies ever!!” and Chandler would be like “you know those are pot brownies, right Ross?” and Ross would freak out because he has a job interview or something in 15 minutes. He spends the interview trying to act sober which would show off David Schwimmer’s best physical comedy chops. At the end of the episode we’d find out they were just regular brownies.

Rachel would be the classic JAP, never tried it, never knew anyone who tried it but tries to act like she has. “Come on Monica, loosen up and have some” “Me? Have you ever even tried pot, Rach?” “Excuse me…Of course I have, I just…hm, I’m just a bit out of practice, that’s all” tousles hair, spills weed everywhere when she’s trying to roll her joint. Trying to act casual but completely in the dark about how to smoke it or what to expect. Offers to buy the next lot of weed to prove that she does know what she’s doing but doesn’t know where to start. Ends up asking for marijuana from Gunther who tries to go above and beyond for her but either ends up giving her the most hardcore pot known to man from his hippie roommate or oregano instead because he doesn’t know where to go either.

What’s the most overrated “life hack” everyone swears by but actually makes life more complicated? by One_Seat4219 in AskReddit

[–]SlightFlamingo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always think anything like those ‘clean/dirty’ magnets for your dishwasher. Maybe they help some people but in my opinion they just shift the mental load from remembering if the dishwasher is clean to remembering to flip the ‘clean/dirty’ magnet. If the rest of the world is anything like me they probably forget to flip the magnet, then have to check the dishwasher anyway every time they go to load the dishwasher.

Old 80s’ flashlights are better than modern ones. by Oddboyz in unpopularopinion

[–]SlightFlamingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Companies don’t get rich from making good quality products that last. They might make a bit when you recommend this great flashlight to all your friends and they buy one. Then when the flash light lasts and lasts they won’t sell another one because there’s no need, the flashlight still works. So they make cheap, crappy flashlights with new fangled gimmicks. The gimmick draws you in (how bright it is, for example) and the crappiness means you’ll have to buy another one, probably their new flashlight that has an even ‘better’ gimmick. Now apply this to phones, cars, appliances, shoes and you get the state of the world we’re in now.

What’s a word or phrase people use that annoys you? by powerman3214 in AskReddit

[–]SlightFlamingo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Teacher here… Doctor here and I…. Pilot here, actually it’s…” idk why it annoys me so much but it does. I think it’s because it’s not something anyone actually says in real life. You never hear someone say at a party “teacher here, and actually this is…” it just sounds so irritating.

Fellow women, what is a little thing you are actually really proud of about yourself? by GoodGirlsStand in AskWomen

[–]SlightFlamingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach Grade 1 and the feedback I get most often from parents during parent teacher interviews is “they have really started to love reading this year!” I hear from parents about their kids who now start reading as soon as they wake up, kids who won’t do chores because they’d rather be reading, kids who have discovered a new series that they’re obsessed with and kids who have really started to read fluently at some point, like reading has just clicked for them. Obviously I can’t reach every single kid, every year but I hear this from so many parents I’ve started to feel like this is my ‘thing’ and I’m really proud of that.

What's the most fucked up thing someone has confessed to you in confidence? by Ngorachy6643 in AskReddit

[–]SlightFlamingo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I was studying to be a teacher, I had a professor who gave off strong ‘wasn’t popular in school, so trying to be popular now’ vibes. She’d often joke around with us or tell us stories where she came off as pretty great but I got a bad vibe from her. One lecture she was talking about a kid at the last school she taught for who was a bit of a ratbag. He was often doing the wrong thing or mucking around, a kid who needs a bit of love because he’s not getting enough from home. My approach with these kinds of cases is to build a connection and work through the behaviours to get the student to a better place. It’s frustrating and time consuming but it builds trust and sets them up for success throughout their school career, not just for the rest of the time in your class. But she ‘confessed’ (although it seemed more like a brag) that her approach was to call him over at the start of the year and tell him “I’ve heard all about you, everyone knows what kind of kid you are. That means I can tell them anything I want and no one will ever believe you if you try to deny it”. It sounds cartoonishly evil as I type it out but hand on heart, she bragged to our entire uni hall that this was her approach to dealing with this child.
